Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

The new republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

    Happy Fourth!

Got a question for you MythBusters fans here – did they ever do a segment on the impact of canonballs on 18th century warships? I was told by my students (high school history) that the MB guys had shown there really wasn’t any splintering from the impact of the broadsides but I’m reading a great book (“Nelson’s Trafalgar”) which has numerous eye-witness accounts and doctor’s reports detailing the murderous splintering effect.

I’m too lazy to actually look for the episode but if you’ve seen it let me know what they did and what they found if you can!

Happy fourth! I celebrated today by singing “John Brown’s Body” (original words for the Battle Hymn song) in the shower, buying a case beer for later and then going to work.

    Mythbusters spoiler

Yes the did, and they found that the splintering was not enough to kill anyone.

Not entirely true. If I remember correctly the myth was technically comparing the lethality of a cannonball hit to that of splinter hits. Of course getting hit by a cannonball directly is, uhh, lethal. They mention, but don’t really take into account, the lethality of subsequent infections from the thousands of splinters flying around. Most contemporary accounts (from what I gather reading Patrick O’brien novels) show that splinters were the biggest danger in a broadside.

They must have done two separate episodes. In the one I saw they were specifically testing the Broadside = Lethal Splinters myth. [/MB Geekosity]

Thanks for the feedback guys – its interesting comparing the MB version with eyewitness accounts from 1805. Maybe it is a case of infection vs. outright kill or something or other.

Maybe it is a case of infection vs. outright kill or something or other.

Yeah, I think it is. I mean, if you get hit with a cannonball you’re going to die, or at least lose a limb. Getting covered in sharp splinters wouldn’t be fun, but not necessarily initially lethal. However the lack of antibiotics, lack of understanding about sterilization, and overall poor hygiene plus the fact that for every 1 cannonball there’s going to be 1,000s of splinters, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were more deaths due to splinters. Also, I think in contemporary accounts “splinter” can mean any size chunk of wood that “splinters” off.

I have to say that as much as I love the Mythbusters (especially Kari!), I think fatal splitering is well enough documented to lead me to believe that the Mythbusters’ experiment may be in error, rather than reality.

Geez…why am I ALWAYS late to a party? Well, anyway, Happy 4th of July to everybody. Maybe when we all awake on the 5th these last 6+ years will all turn out to be a bad dream and we’ll be reading about the 4th of July speech President Gore made from the Twin Towers in NY City…of course if that had happened John would probably still be a Republican complaining about how stiff and wooden Gore is and how bad the Democrats are…lol

Hope everyone had a fun fourth! We went to our favorite section of beach on the Pacific coast (about two miles south of home) and blew up everything that we could find.

We were sitting around the campfire about midnight, and our daughter says ‘Well, anyone have a good scary story?’, and we all went ‘eh…’. So she said ‘I have a good one…, it is called “The Third Term”…’.

I am sure that the ships twenty miles out heard us laughing…

The kid has my sense of humor, that is for sure…

Mythbusters needs a show called Mythbusting Mythbusters to correct the massive number of errors in their methods. It’s fun to watch if you can accept the ‘science’ is less rigorous than the original Star Treks.
