Happy Birthday, America!

We the people…
And thanks for the head’s up re: Mythbusters. This dork wouldn’t want to miss that.
And it’ll be soo much better for my bp than accidental exposure to the C-i-C talking about liburdy n’ freedum.
Happy Independence Day!

If you people keep this up, there are gonna be fireworks before this day is over.

Happy Fourth!
Got a question for you MythBusters fans here – did they ever do a segment on the impact of canonballs on 18th century warships? I was told by my students (high school history) that the MB guys had shown there really wasn’t any splintering from the impact of the broadsides but I’m reading a great book (“Nelson’s Trafalgar”) which has numerous eye-witness accounts and doctor’s reports detailing the murderous splintering effect.
I’m too lazy to actually look for the episode but if you’ve seen it let me know what they did and what they found if you can!

Happy Fourth.
The office is so empty today. Even the dudes from India took the day off.
Punchy
Eural–
Yes the did, and they found that the splintering was not enough to kill anyone.

Happy fourth! I celebrated today by singing “John Brown’s Body” (original words for the Battle Hymn song) in the shower, buying a case beer for later and then going to work.

MythBusters SPOILER ALERT
There were pigs, matey. Pigs in pirate outfits. It must be seen to be fully appreciated.
Rome Again
Well, honestly, I’d like to see a different sort. ;)

Mythbusters spoiler
Not entirely true. If I remember correctly the myth was technically comparing the lethality of a cannonball hit to that of splinter hits. Of course getting hit by a cannonball directly is, uhh, lethal. They mention, but don’t really take into account, the lethality of subsequent infections from the thousands of splinters flying around. Most contemporary accounts (from what I gather reading Patrick O’brien novels) show that splinters were the biggest danger in a broadside.

Another MythBusters SPOILER ALERT
They must have done two separate episodes. In the one I saw they were specifically testing the Broadside = Lethal Splinters myth. [/MB Geekosity]

Temptress!

Are you sure? Without hearing my plan, you wouldn’t know.
I saw Sicko last night. I was thinking we ought to take everyone who keeps our nation beholden to HMO’s and line em up and shoot em! Them’s my kind of fireworks! ;)
ThymeZone
True, I was kind of going with my best case scenario.
Rome Again
Okay, I’m speechless. You managed to do what nobody could.
ThymeZone
I was just inspired. In the right company, great things are possible.

The tao of “oooh”?
ThymeZone
It’s all about letting go.

Thanks for the feedback guys – its interesting comparing the MB version with eyewitness accounts from 1805. Maybe it is a case of infection vs. outright kill or something or other.

Yeah, I think it is. I mean, if you get hit with a cannonball you’re going to die, or at least lose a limb. Getting covered in sharp splinters wouldn’t be fun, but not necessarily initially lethal. However the lack of antibiotics, lack of understanding about sterilization, and overall poor hygiene plus the fact that for every 1 cannonball there’s going to be 1,000s of splinters, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were more deaths due to splinters. Also, I think in contemporary accounts “splinter” can mean any size chunk of wood that “splinters” off.

I have to say that as much as I love the Mythbusters (especially Kari!), I think fatal splitering is well enough documented to lead me to believe that the Mythbusters’ experiment may be in error, rather than reality.

All hail the mighty Joey “Jaws” Chestnut!
For the first time in six years, the championship sits once again in an Americans hands!

Geez…why am I ALWAYS late to a party? Well, anyway, Happy 4th of July to everybody. Maybe when we all awake on the 5th these last 6+ years will all turn out to be a bad dream and we’ll be reading about the 4th of July speech President Gore made from the Twin Towers in NY City…of course if that had happened John would probably still be a Republican complaining about how stiff and wooden Gore is and how bad the Democrats are…lol

Hope everyone had a fun fourth! We went to our favorite section of beach on the Pacific coast (about two miles south of home) and blew up everything that we could find.
We were sitting around the campfire about midnight, and our daughter says ‘Well, anyone have a good scary story?’, and we all went ‘eh…’. So she said ‘I have a good one…, it is called “The Third Term”…’.
I am sure that the ships twenty miles out heard us laughing…
The kid has my sense of humor, that is for sure…

Happy fourth a day late, was so busy yesterday I didn’t have time to respond then. Spent the day watching the revolution on History Channel. All I can say is every one of those men would look at us like we’ve lost our minds.
Jake
Aaaaieeeeee!!

Mythbusters needs a show called Mythbusting Mythbusters to correct the massive number of errors in their methods. It’s fun to watch if you can accept the ‘science’ is less rigorous than the original Star Treks.
