I’m not one to side with the Bush administration, but Saudi exportation of extremism has caused far, far more trouble than the US invasion of Iraq. The fact that we haven’t had a more direct confrontation with the Saudis is a testiment to how ass-backwards our approach to the Middle-East truly is.

That being said, I hope Satan lets these two assholes hold hands in hell.

I wouldn’t go that far. Saudi terrorists just can’t compare to the US Army in terms of manpower, firepower, and hubris. It’s like comparing Tim McVeigh to Hitler’s Panzer Corps (Godwin in 4). You just can’t compare a guy with some fertilizer bombs to a nation armed with bombers and tanks. And muslim terrorists usually have the good grace to kill themselves in their own attacks. US Soldiers tend to stick around until the next election cycle.

That’s a Western style belt. In Texas, as in Arizona, western is always chic, no matter what. You can wear a bolo tie with a tux here. Not just any bolo tie, but a bolo tie with a scorpion embedded in amber on the clasp.

A bolo tie (sometimes bola tie) is a type of necktie consisting of a piece of cord fastened with an ornamental bar or clasp. The bolo tie is a North American pioneer creation that dates back to between 1866 and 1886. There is a bolo tie on display at a trading post in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico that dates back that far. The bolo tie was created in 1949 by Vic Cedarstaff in Wickenburg, Arizona and later patented.

In the United Kingdom, bolo ties are known as “Bootlace ties”. They were popular with 1950s Teddy Boys, who wore them with drape suits.

In the United States bolo ties are widely associated with traditional cowboy dress, and are generally most common in the western areas of the country. Many Native Americans have also worn bolo ties. The bolo tie was made the official neckwear of Arizona in 1971. New Mexico passed a non-binding measure to designate the bolo as the state’s official neckwear in 1987. On March 13, 2007, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson signed into law that the bolo tie is now the state’s official tie.[1]

Take yer effete eastern snobbery and ….. well, you know.

    Cassidy,

Zifnab was saying that, in terms of ongoing disruptivity, US troops have greater staying power than suicide bombers since they are a continuous presence. He was also saying that terrorists killing themselves is a good thing, since it results in dead terrorists, not that US troops ought to kill themselves or that he hopes they die. Not that I expect you to see any of that.

In any case, zif, the Saudi’s have been funding and exporting wahhabism in the region as a means of keeping internal desent to a minimum. Not to mention the fact that most of the 9/11 hijackers and bin Laden himself are/were Saudis. Our blundering, imbeciic adventure in Iraq isn’t helping things, but the Saudi’s have been laying the tinder for a regional conflagration for decades.

Are we referring to the Saudi government here? Because if so I’d need something to back up such a claim. If we are instead referring to Saudi citizens I’d say this is correct, but not for the reason you state.

Well, for starters I’d question how much the Saudi “citizens” and charaties that funnel money to Al Qaeda and other Sunni extremist groups are actually distinct from the government. Saudi Arabia is, after all, a dictatorship whose power stems from controling the oil market. Saudi Royal family funding for wahhabism wasn’t something I honestly thought there was any dispute about. The House of Saud is a fucking mess that uses anti-Americanism as a means of focusing popular anger at a foreign power in order to consolidate and maintain its own power. There is a reason, after all, that the House of Saud and the House of Bush are such great, long term friends.

    Davebo Says:

Are we referring to the Saudi government here? Because if so I’d need something to back up such a claim. If we are instead referring to Saudi citizens I’d say this is correct, but not for the reason you state.

Saudi Arabia owes its existence to the wahabbists. The founder of the “Kingdom” made a deal with the founder of what was to become wahabbism as such it would become the official practice of Islam in the kingdom. Of course some of this changed over time and the kingdom was at war with the Ottoman’s numerous times leaving it fractured. When it re-emerged again during the 1920’s it was a result of the Al-Saud family again aligning itself with the wahabbists and uniting warring tribal factions.

While some elements have changed at least publicly Wahabbism is still the state form for practicing Islam and is even more strict in the farther reaches of the kingdom. As for exporting Wahabbism, this was done during the Afghan war to some extent. Supporting the jihad there the kingdom sent forth the faithful to battle the soviets.

In doing so they exported wahabbist beliefs and ideals that were at the root of the Taliban. Further their continued support for madrassa’s in pakistan and elsewhere continues to promote the wahabbist sect.

  31. 31.

    Zifnab

    July 27, 2007 at 5:36 pm

In short, Saudi Arabia uses wahabbism like Evangelicals use… well… evangelicalism. To get their dirty mits into another country’s political system under the cover of religion. Then use the faithful to dutifully and mindlessly forward the political line as a political-but-not-really-political-because-its-religious message.

We done got sold out to the Saudis for the illusionary promise of cheap gas.

Seriously, the overwhelming majority of civilians in this country aren’t living high on the blood of anybody…well, maybe the blood of child laborers in China, if anything.

If you want to jab a finger in the eye of a few civilians high on the hog, look no further than the politicians that put our servicemen in a shit situation and their buddies who profit from it. I doubt that applies to anybody here.
