Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The jury literally has a bell they can ring to force Trump to show up on command. Greatest thing ever!

It’s a doggy dog world.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

If you are in line to indict donald trump, stay in line.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

…and a burning sense of injustice to juice the soul.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Dishonest Hacks

by John Cole|  July 23, 20077:32 pm| 102 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

I now declare that Red State is a spoof site, because they really can’t be this dishonest, this stupid, and have fallen so far from when Red State was actually somewhat readable. If they will lie and distort and spin about something this inconsequential, what won’t they lie about?

And one more thing, morons- this is satire. This whole stupid affair, from the original post to the right-wing lies about it is so god damned stupid I am personally shocked Hugh Hewitt has not written about it.

*** Update ***

Apparently some say it is not satire- guess I was thrown at the hot gay sex comment. I stand by them being morons.

Keeping Score

by John Cole|  July 23, 20071:21 pm| 160 Comments

This post is in: Blogospheric Navel-Gazing, General Stupidity

Just in case you were keeping score- some anonymous wingnut wrote a nasty anti-military screed on DKOS, had it promptly deleted by the folks at DKOS, and that is somehow proof that the left hates troops.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is running around posing for pics with offensive posters, and the usual suspects are quiet.

Current score:

Hypocrisy 1, Sanity 0

BTW- This piece from Charles Johnson at LGF is pretty hacktacular:

The leftist blogosphere went out of their way to cover this one up as quickly as possible.

It was posted at Daily Kos, as Ace relates. But the Kidz are on edge about their credibility, so it was deleted within hours, without a word of explanation. Just doesn’t look right to be dissing the military when Kos is trying so hard to be the voice of the Democratic Party.

I actually had a window open to that page, and was going to write about it, but when I refreshed I saw it had been disappeared.

A quick refresher- anyone can post a diary there. I could log on to my account and write nothing but BUSH SUCKS BUSH SUCKS BUSH SUCKS BUSH SUCKS. In fact, I just did.

In other words, some idiot posted something, the community at DKOS found it offensive, and they deleted it. Isn’t that tacit support for the troops?

If they had left the post up, we would have had the usual suspects with the normal rightwing linkgasm: Michelle Malkin would have a post with 72 updates, and every drooling, frothing 28%er with a keyboard would have linked to it within hours claiming it PROVES THE LEFT HATES THE TROOPS. The spelling and punctuation wouldn’t be as good as mine, though.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Which is kind of an object lesson about reading Ace and LGF anymore.

*** Update ****

BREAKING FAST- THE PLOT THICKENS

It appears the perpetrator of the cover-up at DKOS was the AUTHOR, HIMSELF:

We just spoke with the true-crime author who wrote the piece and published it at Daily Kos and In Cold Blog.

“It’s not my intention to denigrate the troops,” Corey Mitchell says. “It’s to help them when they get back.”

Within a few hours of the original posting, Mitchell says he added a disclaimer: This article in no way is meant to suggest that all military members will become serial killers or mass murderers. It does point out a serious problem with what is happening in our armed forces and seeks a solution to help the brave men and women on their return back home.

But Mitchell says he then pulled the posting from both blogs after readers, liberals and conservatives alike, “ripped it to shreds.” He says no one from Daily Kos asked him to remove the posting.

NO ONE ASKED HIM TO REMOVE THE POSTING, MORE CLEAR PROOF THE LEFT HATES THE TROOPS!

Better Off Dead

Nothing particularly surprising here:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture distributed $1.1 billion over seven years to the estates or companies of deceased farmers and routinely failed to conduct reviews required to ensure that the payments were properly made, according to a government report.

In a selection of 181 cases from 1999 to 2005, the Government Accountability Office found that officials approved payments without any review 40 percent of the time.

The report cited a 1,900-acre soybean and corn farm in Illinois that collected $400,000 on behalf of an owner who lived in Florida before his death in 1995. The company did not notify the government of the death but certified each year that the dead shareholder, who owned 40 percent of the company, was “actively engaged” in managing the farm.

Of course I disapprove of this kind of waste, but it is really hard to get my knickers in a twist these days about 1 billion over seven years when we are closing on a half a trillion spent on the Iraq war, with a good bit of that wasted. You remember that war- it was going to pay for itself.

Regardless, at some point, when our government is approaching sanity, we need to have a serious discussion about why these subsidies need to continue, period.

Potter!

I’m man enough to admit that I teared up a bit at the end*. In my view all the magical froofaraw matters less than the author’s real gift for engaging characters. Although J.K. Rowling wrapped up the contours of the leading triangle by book three or so, leaving a chunk of the book focused on them feeling dramatically thin, the fun when she sets loose the huge supporting cast is more than worth it.

On the whole it grabbed me as a reader more than most recent fiction. Take that with a grain of salt since I don’t read much fiction these days.

NOTE: I can’t police the comments all night, so you can count on spoilers.

(*) This has nothing to do with who did or didn’t die, Rowling just sets a couple of very touching scenes)

RIP Tammy Faye

by John Cole|  July 22, 200710:05 am| 143 Comments

This is actually kind of sad- Tammy Faye Bakker is dead:

Tammy Faye Bakker, the diminutive and elaborately coiffed gospel singer who, with her first husband, Jim Bakker, built a commercial empire around television evangelism only to see it collapse in sex and money scandals, died Friday at her home near Kansas City, Mo. She was 65.

Her death was reported on her Web site and by her booking agent, Joe Spotts, The Associated Press said. She had been suffering from colon cancer, which had spread to her lungs.

On May 8, Ms. Messner, as she had been known since her 1993 marriage to Roe Messner, posted a letter on her Web site, saying that her weight had dwindled to 65 pounds and that doctors had stopped treatment. “Now it’s up to God and my faith,” she wrote.

I grew up watching Tammy Faye, but not in the way you are thinking. PTL was on the channel that hosted the “snowbird” reports when I was a kid, so every morning, when there was the slightest bit of snow on the ground, all four of us kids would gather round the television watching the Praise the Lord Network waiting for those magical words:

“Brooke County Schools have been cancelled.”

Praise the Lord INDEED!

At any rate, I get nostalgic whenever some cultural icon from my youth passes- Tammy Faye is one of them. And, I guess I must add, compared to the religious leaders from the Christian right today, an assortment of bigots, loudmouths, and lunatics, my memory of Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker makes them seem pretty harmless by comparison.

Pharyngula is less charitable, and probably more accurate.
