More animal friends that I’ve met during my time away from work and politics.
This first pic is for my ma who detests spiders. Conversely, I love spiders and anything else that eats mosquitoes. I have no idea what species this is but the bandy legs looked cool to me.

I think that I might have a better handle on this one:

You never told me your mother reads this site. Are you sure that is appropriate?
Steven Donegal
How’d you PhotoShop those mountains around that horse? That’s a pretty good trick
Perry Como
How did he get the horse into the airport bathroom? That’s an even better trick.
Zifnab
Ride! I totally dare you to ride it! OMG, ride it!
Pb
Clop clop clop.
HyperIon
that horse shot does resemble the Cascades….
myiq2xu
I’m pretty sure that second one is a horse.
jesse's girl
Either that, or it’s a hell of a big spider.
cleek
that horse must be 70 feet tall.
run!
Nikki
I’m with you mom. Spiders are threats to national security (especially if I know a national secret and you hold a spider in front of me to get the secret out of me) and icky.
Tim F.
My mom could out-cuss this blog, if that’s what you mean. Maybe you instead mean to say that the indirect sex jokes will embarrass her. Ha.
jake
Overheard in an airport bathroom:
Sorry.
The surprise is Tim F is moving to wherever these pics were taken. Safe in the mountains the last post many of us read will be:
“Yeah, you thought I was joking about the seas rising muthafuckas! Drown, drown like rats, you low-land dwelling beotches!”
jaime
is that an orb weaver spider?
srv
Durango. Mmmm. Beer. Ska IPA. Mmmm.
Go see the ‘Anasazi’ cliff dwellings. Worth it.
Pb
Neigh.
JWW
No that is not an Orb Weaver, they build a full measure 2 or 3 level web. It is seasonal, and protects them from birds. The spider pictured, usually builds a web each day. Retracting the web as per the birds that will feed on it. If the local area has night feeders they rebuild the web each day, and if they have day feeders, they rebuiled each night. If you see one, you can watch them and see the skill, and weight loss as they weave.

Spiders are our friends.
These things are not.
Krista
I am so impressed with Tim’s mom, and would love for her to give us a sample of her cussing prowess.
VidaLoca
Jake,
No, that’s a scutigera — the bite can be somewhat unpleasant (or worse if you’re allergic) but they eat a lot of other insects that really are pests.
VidaLoca
Tim, how about bringing your mom in for a guest-blogging session?
Xenos
How do we know that Tim’s mom has not been commenting?
Maybe she is DougJ, or BIRDZILLA!
I would so love it if my mom had a secret life as Birdzilla.
incontrolados
Sorry OT
PW fails to mention Rudolph in post about the death of the man who paid the price for the Atlanta Olypics terrorism.
That’s news, right?
jake
From wikipedia on centipedia:
Fixed.
I know they eat real pests and usually they stay the hell out of my way, I don’t have to dance around screaming and everyone’s happy. But right now, if one of the cats were to come by and brush my foot with its whiskers, rescue workers would have to pull my ass out of the ceiling.

Is the horse standing at the edge of the Mississippi Delta?
myiq2xu
Okay, I checked wikipedia, and that is definitely a horse.
Punchy
Cat blogging, beer blogging, and now Mom blogging? Are we gunna get the skinny on the happenin’s at the local PTA? Can we finally find out what Old Mrs. Beatters Down The Street does with all those lawn jarts? Throw us a reciepe for one bitchin’ egg casserole?
This promises to be good. Mrs. F, work your magic.
cleek
maybe. this one definitely is.
cleek
oops. stupid hot-linking filter.
this is the orb weaver.
cleek
and none of those spiders compare to this…
Bob In Pacifica
Where I take my hikes on Montara Mountain there is a doe and her twins from last year. Having twin fawns survive is rare. The young ones are getting old enough to head out on their own now. I wonder if the whole family dynamics of twins has made a stronger connection among them. Anyway, they’re minor celebrities and are seen together often.

Recipe for Bitchen’ Egg Casserole, or as it’s known around here: Grandma Mickie’s “Y’all Wanna L’il Snack?” Egg Casserole
Grandma Mickie is the tiny little Mother-In-Law of one of my good friends. Her mission in life is feeding anyone who crosses her threshold. Each time they cross it…..
Grandma Mickie’s “Y’all Wanna L’il Snack?” egg Casserole
12 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
2T mustard
1 box croutons – garlic/cheese is good
2 cups shredded cheese – Cheddar preferred
salts and peppers
Butter a 9×12 casserole. Spread the croutons out. Top with the shredded cheese. Wisk salt, pepper, mustard, milk and eggs together. Pour over croutons and cheese. Bake at 325* for an hour or until a knife blade comes out clean.
Mike W
Who am I sticking the knife blade in?
Larv
JWW, are you sure about that? That looks a lot like an orb weaver to me, specifically Araneus trifolium, the shamrock spider. Here’s an image from Bugguide for comparison.
Fwiffo
Looks like A. trifolium to me. Definitely Araneus at least.
Alllit
For Pony!
Dreggas
spider looks like an araneus gemma, or tree spider, at best a relative. Definitely an orb weaver.
Jackie
Looking at the photo of an Orb Weaver shown on Wikipedia, I’d say yes, it’s an Orb Weaver. Same identical banded legs, and body:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb-weaver_spider
Ironically, I made Tim’s photo my screen saver for a few days – just to irritate my son’s girlfriend (who is terrified of spiders) – and now I have my own orb weaver with the coolest web outside off of my back porch. I don’t know if it’s a Charlotte or Wilbur, but it’s been cool watching and observing.
