Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Bark louder, little dog.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

I really should read my own blog.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Books are my comfort food!

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

“But what about the lurkers?”

If you are in line to indict donald trump, stay in line.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Everybody saw this coming.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

A state of war now exists between our blogs.

I should probably get busy actually posting stuff on it, since I’m at war with your blog and all.

It doesn’t get better than that? Sure it does — Michigan loses to a Division 1-AA team (say, like Appalachian State) at home during its opening game of the season.

What demimondian said, plus Clay Buchholz throws a no-hitter, and Matt Ryan gets started on his Heisman campaign. Quite a day.

It doesn’t get any better than that?

    Sure it does.

For example, the football season is canceled because everyone wants to watch the Bush-Cheney impeachment hearings and Senate trial.

I heard about that Michigan game. Damn…

My team is struggling to beat Bowling Green right now. Looks like we won’t be doing much this year.

Update your blog. The Michigan upset has given this nation the highest amount of schadenfreude this side of a Minnesota airport bathroom.

Wait. WVU beat some Midwest team … what’re they again? MICHIGAN? Hai Caraumba!

And then, mirabile dictu, someone (anyone, really, will do) beats Notre Dame du Lac?

There is a God. And apparently, He’s Protestant and likes banjo music.

    Thanks be to God.

OT, but… you know that whole possible war with Iran thing? You know, as in, “who would be stupid enough to advocate such a thing”? Well, apparently they’ve got the Heritage Foundation running the numbers for them…

The simulation, which took four months, was run by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank with close links to the White House. Its conclusions, drawn up last month and seen by The Sunday Telegraph, have been passed on to military and civilian planners charged with drawing up plans for confronting Iran.
    […]
In the meantime, administration officials are studying the lessons of the recent war game, which was set up to devise a way of weathering an economic storm created by war with Iran. Computer modelling found that if Iran closed the Straits of Hormuz, it would nearly double the world price of oil, knock $161 billion off American GDP in a single quarter, cost one million jobs and slash disposable income by $260 billion a quarter.

The war gamers advocated deploying American oil reserves – good for 60 days – using military force to break the blockade (two US aircraft carrier groups and half of America’s 277 warships are already stationed close to Iran), opening up oil development in Alaska, and ending import tariffs on ethanol fuel. If the government also subsidised fuel for poorer Americans, the war-gamers concluded, it would mitigate the financial consequences of a conflict.

The Heritage report concludes: “The results were impressive. The policy recommendations eliminated virtually all of the negative outcomes from the blockade.”

And if you believe that, I’ve got some candy and flowers to throw at you. Seriously, this is even dumber than having AEI plan the “surge”. We are so screwed.

Computer simulation works well for relative “simple” problems, such as structual analysis, that are well-based in physics (and this stuff can be really damn tough to get right). A simulation that relies on characterizing human behavior – billions of humans, in fact – has got to be a huge waste of processor cycles. Someone shoulda just spent a few months playing WoW and then published results that supported the desired outcome (which, in fact, may have been what occurred here).

But even a surprise attack on Iran will seem insignificant if U-M falls out of the top 25.

    Angry Engineer,

They were war games, I don’t know how much computer simulation was involved. But in either case, I don’t put much stock in their “policy recommendations” magically fixing everything. Not to mention the lack of a sufficient casus bellum and all, but anyhow…

Cal whacked Tennessee, so God must like white wine and oak trees too.

And for the powerhouses like Michigan who like to fatten their records against little teams, how did it feel to be #5 this season?

This is why they shouldn’t do preseason polling. You can never tell how good or bad a team really is until they actually play. I’m sick of seeing Notre Dame ranked nearly every year, and look at how many losses they rack up before September ends anymore.

This should also remind people that the Big 10 is overrated. They might have been good in the 50s, or the 60s, or in all the other decades past, but now, today?! They’re at best the 4th best conference out there, behind the SEC, Pac-10, and Big 12. The Big East might be even to them now (lordy, where is the ACC?).

Uh, nah I don’t think so. Iowa’s going undefeated.

At least this year I think most people knew that Notre Dame wasn’t going to do well. But who would have known that Michigan was going to start out like that?

Yeah, the preseason polls are pretty much worthless.

Dear Mr. Cole: That you delight in Notre Dame losing, has cost you all the admiration I once held for you. The lowest circle of Dante’s hell is too good for you, as is Gitmo.

My prayer is that you spend all of eternity locked in a small cell with Dan Riehl.

College football is nothing but a friggin beauty pageant. What other sport in the world, including soccer, bowling, curling or golf is the championship determined by a vote of non-participants. aka the BCS.

Oh what the fuck, go Cal Bears!!!!

People would hate Notre Dame less if their fans displayed just a smidgen of humility about the quality of their team.

You guys suck, and you’ve sucked for a while. You don’t see Nebraska fans losing their minds every time someone points out that they’re not all that hot right now, and they’ve got at least some recent successes to point to.

Notre Dame doesn’t even have that, and yet the ND fan base (and, yes, the media — did you hear Charlie Weis is the Albert Einstein of college football?) have some fucked-up inferiority complex about their team. They absolutely, positively refuse to accept any sort of criticism whatsoever.

If ND would lose the false entitlement, they’d get a lot more respect. Perennially good football programs recognize their down years and are realistic about what they need to do to fix their problems; they don’t just expect everything to be handed to them on a golden platter.

No one wanted to play Yale or Army back in the day, either — and if ND doesn’t get a grip on reality, they’ll end up the same way: just a footnote in the history books.

As a Texas fan, I would just like to say: THPPPPPPPT!

P.S. Nice job with Tennessee. Next time you’re up there tell them to give us back our school colors and stop calling themselves UT. They’re not fooling anyone.

    P.P.S. Please beat USC. Thanks.

I have a part-time job at a miniature golf course in South Bend. Anyone who came in in Georgia Tech clothes last weekend (granted, only a couple of people) played for free. ‘Twas a glorious weekend. Fuck Notre Dame.

You still have some endearing qualties, John. I continue to have hope for your recovery.

It’s always been a wonder to me that ND football (in past years, of course) didn’t trigger sectarian violence in this country, when every away appearance was accompanied by a large number of the local Catholic high schools appearing en masse to root against the local team.

At lest, that always pissed me off.
