Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

I desperately hope that, yet again, I am wrong.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

The game isn’t over, but I am calling it.

Consider this an open thread.

And nerf warlocks. Fear. Fear. Fear. Spell lock. Skill coil.

Lame.

When I was a wee girl, I had a teacher who turned me on to this poem. It has been on my mind a lot lately, and though it was written nearly 50 years ago (1961?) it has renewed meaning, sadly. Yeah, I’m a child of the first nuclear age.

    Advice to a Prophet
    by Richard Wilbur

When you come, as you soon must, to the streets of our city,
    Mad-eyed from stating the obvious,
Not proclaiming our fall but begging us
In God’s name to have self-pity,

Spare us all word of the weapons, their force and range,
    The long numbers that rocket the mind;
Our slow, unreckoning hearts will be left behind,
Unable to fear what is too strange.

Nor shall you scare us with talk of the death of the race.
How should we dream of this place without us?–
The sun mere fire, the leaves untroubled about us,
A stone look on the stone’s face?

Speak of the world’s own change. Though we cannot conceive
Of an undreamt thing, we know to our cost
How the dreamt cloud crumbles, the vines are blackened by frost,
How the view alters. We could believe,

If you told us so, that the white-tailed deer will slip
Into perfect shade, grown perfectly shy,
The lark avoid the reaches of our eye,
The jack-pine lose its knuckled grip

On the cold ledge, and every torrent burn
As Xanthus once, its gliding trout
Stunned in a twinkling. What should we be without
The dolphin’s arc, the dove’s return,

These things in which we have seen ourselves and spoken?
Ask us, prophet, how we shall call
Our natures forth when that live tongue is all
Dispelled, that glass obscured or broken

In which we have said the rose of our love and the clean
Horse of our courage, in which beheld
The singing locust of the soul unshelled,
And all we mean or wish to mean.

Ask us, ask us whether with the worldless rose
Our hearts shall fail us; come demanding
Whether there shall be lofty or long standing
When the bronze annals of the oak-tree close.

So glad football is back, and it looks like the Niners might actually field a real team this year.

    Oh yeah…

Oh, my Brownies where have you gone
My heart’s so sad and forlorn
    You haven’t been the same
    since coming home, from Baltimore

Oh, my Brownies, where have you gone
I fear your lost for evermore
    and will never be found
I long for the kids in the Dogpound.

But we’ll always have the 70’s
When Franco, Lynn and Terry came to town
And you broke bones with Lambert and Ham
and every game was won or lost
    by less than a touchdown

Oh, my Brownies, I miss you so

Buffalo lost. Now I get to watch Oakland lose. Why do I “like” the teams I do?

If Lovie Smith doesn’t bench Grossman for the 2nd half, then it’s official–he’s got money on SD. There’s just no excuse to start your 3rd best QB when he’s openly trying to lose the game.

I love watching Oakland lose. It’s only topped by watching Dallas lose.

PvP trinkets can’t save you from warlocks. Pretty much nothing can. The obvious solution? Roll a warlock.

In most cases this is the correct answer, but IIRC you play a mage, so you’re basically toast.

So TCU can suck it and bow to the ever-awesome-ass-kicking of the UT Longhorns. This game would have been way more epic to watch except for the fact that A&M DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO JUST UP AND WIN A FOOTBALL GAME!

OMG! OT x3 WTF! Fresno State wasn’t even a ranked team.

That said, it was a freak’n good weekend.

17/0/44 or 0/7/54 makes the odds a little better. But I only spec that on weekends.
