Apropos of nothing in particular, some scientific reports have an undeniable cool factor:
As a purely leptonic, macroscopic quantum matter–antimatter system this would be of interest in its own right, but it would also represent a milestone on the path to produce an annihilation gamma-ray laser.
Bwahahaha. Read more here to find out what the hell that was all about.

Damn. I have always wished I could understand shit like this.
But an annihilation gamma-ray laser has an ominous sound to it.
Is that something that would make the Pentagons mouth water?

Killface: [At the Annihilatrix] There’s your twenty billion, Brent! Drink it in! The fusion chamber alone cost nine billion. The- The- The thrusters another four. You think there’s just heaps of money left over for- What did you call it!?
Brent: Uh- Uh- “Media buy”.
Killface: Media buy!
Valerie: Please don’t kill us!
Killface: Please don’t make it so appealing!

Well if successful they could create an extremely high-powered & ultra high frequency single-use laser with relatively little fuel needed… so yeah I’d say that’s probably got the Pentagon excited.
It’s all a matter of scale, and once they get the engineering and positronium production/storage figured out there’s nothing to stop this from being weaponized. Still a ways off, but once something’s show to be possible it’s no longer a matter of IF it will be produced, but WHEN.

When MATTER and ANTIMATTER come together you,ll get a tremendous explosion

Don’t mis-understand what they are saying – first, the gamma ray occurs when the electron-positron unite and destory each other and they convert to pure energy; (however, note that the gamma ray can not destory atoms)- gamma rays are just very high energy light; they occur all the time around us (at VERY low rates)when cosmic rays rain down through the air – only dangerous at high flux rates (nuclear reactors, atomic bombs ….) You can not NOT make a laser using the method they talked about – wrong, wrong , wrong – a laser is simulated emmission; a gamma ray passing an electron/anti-electron pair will NOT cause the system to emitt a gamma ray of the correct energy. No simulated emission can ever occur; no laser action will ever occur- sorry, not going to happen.
There IS a way to create a gamma ray laser (but I will not waste your time with the endless physics – it is borrrrriiiiiinnnngggg, however, it is in a novel I wrote but that is even more boring.) In any case, the cost in energy is rediculus – shoot a bullet, its cheap, simple and very sure thing or better yet, use an RPG (a type of IED but man portable and very, very deadly.)
