Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s finish the job.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Maclean’s:

Liberal journalists, AND they are Canadian. Probably French-Canadian at that. It’s a twofer.

Someone better get a Senate Resolution fired up!

*** Update ***

You ask, Malkin delivers:

When your left-wing magazine is in need of some quick buzz and a cheap circulation boost, what do you do? Go for the easy Bush-bashing photoshop, of course.

    All Hat, no Horse

    Bush is terrified of horses.

President Bush may like to be seen as a swaggering tough guy with a penchant for manly outdoor pursuits, but in a new book one of his closest allies has said he is afraid of horses.

Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico, derided his political friend as a “windshield cowboy” – a cowboy who prefers to drive – and “the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life”.

He recalled a meeting in Mexico shortly after both men had been elected when Mr Fox offered Mr Bush a ride on a “big palomino” horse.

Mr Fox, who left office in December, recalled Mr Bush “backing away” from the animal.

Hell, even I’ve ridden a horse. Just like two months ago we went horseback riding. Granted, it was a nice slow horse, and we did single file behind the leader.

That is an OUTRAGE but do not believe them Macleans if that is their real name only wants to sell books. They do not care if we win or lose they only care about theyre own political gains they do not understand that REAL AMERICANS SUPPORT THE TROOPS and that is why they are so unpoppular. They think that if they make us lose by making more Americans believe that we can not win that they will score political points it is all politics with them. They will give up and make our brave men and women in uniform have died for nothing by not staying the course until it is won. They say that more will soldiers will die – of course they will duh they are not called LEFTARDS for nothing – but that does not matter that is why they signed up you forget it is a VOLUNTEER ARMY. That means that they WANT TO FIGHT. It is SHAMEFUL that Maclean’s does this to try to break the spirits of our troops but theyre plan to help the terrorists will not work becaue nobody I know reads theyre magazine anyway.

You are new to this game, aren’t you? It does not matter if they are actually liberal or not, because it is just a known fact that all media has a liberal bias. Just like USC’s decision to not allow Larry Summers to visit is tied in with Ahjmanalphabet’s visit to Columbia- sure, they are separate institutions who do their own thing, they are part of the liberal academy and those two separate actions show what the liberal elite opinion really is.

Too bad that cover will become a patented Right Wing Distraction from the truly awesome work inside the article. Especially when the author points out stuff like this:

The old tyrant [Saddam] would have had one of his characteristic chest-heaving guffaws watching Petraeus as he intoned the old Baathist mantra about the dangers to Iraq: Iran, Iran, Iran. Bush took up Gen. Petraeus’s views a few days later in a nationally televised speech about Iraq, in which he talked about the threat Tehran posed. It seems that Petraeus and Bush have come to the same conclusion as Saddam: the main enemy is Iran, and you can’t govern Iraq without the Sunni Arab tribes, even as you encourage anti-Iranian nationalism among the Shia. This is what Saddam did during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, and what Washington is trying to do now. One of the main problems with this strategy is that both the Sunni tribes and Shia nationalists are profoundly anti-American and don’t trust each other—a potential recipe for further disaster.

    Everyone: It’s Canada’s fault!
    Sharon: Don’t blame me
    For my son Stan
    He saw the damn cartoon
And now he’s off to join the Klan!
Liane: And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to fuck myself!
    Sheila: Well, blame Canada
    Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: It seems that everything’s gone wrong
    Since Canada came along
    Everyone: Blame Canada
    Blame Canada
Copy Guy: They’re not even a real country anyway
Ms. McCormick: My son could’ve been a doctor or a lawyer rich and true,
Instead he burned up like a piggy on the barbecue
Everyone: Should we blame the matches?
    Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
    Sheila: heck no!
    Everyone: Blame Canada
    Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their hockey hullabaloo
Liane: And that bitch Anne Murray too
    Everyone: Blame Canada
    Shame on Canada
    For…
    The smut we must stop
    The trash we must bash
    The Laughter and fun

A mass protest against Bush on horseback…I love that idea!

I love horses, they love me, too. When I walk into a group of them, they come over to me. Love to ride them, too. My mother does not like horses (60 years after a riding accident when she was a very small girl), when my stepdad was raising Missouri Fox Trotters she’d make jokes about horse meat, but now that they have the big draft horses, Belgians and Percherons she adores them…go figure.

    Why invade Canada?

    ——————————————————————————–

    It’s been done before
(And we’re not just talking about those South Park kids or John Candy.)

You know if it wasn’t for Benedict Arnold (Yup, the traitor of later) losing a key battle in the Revolutionary War, Canada would probably be a part of the U.S. (But much like New Jersey, we probably wouldn’t want it).

    Canada Has Stuff!
First off, let’s make Alaska actually connected to the U.S. again! Those Alaskan folks are always getting screwed by not being part of the “continental 48 states”. Let’s give them a nice little bridge downstairs. A little bit of farmland never hurt anything either, but forget the permafrost part. Canada is the second largest country in the world, let’s fix that.

If Christmas ever fails to come, the Canucks did it
The magnetic north pole is within the Canadian border. We must protect Santa Claus!

They’re just a little too proud
Perhaps if they didn’t think it was so cool to live in “Diet America” we wouldn’t need to invade them, but with people like this guy and these people thinking that Canada is the coolest thing since sliced bread, we need to do our part to keep them in their place. There’s a reason the continent is called “North America” and not “North Canada”.

    They stole our basketball teams
Since when does the “N.B.A.” stand for “Canadians Can Play Too”. We need to get Vancouver and Toronto annexed into America to preserve the “N”.

They don’t play nicely with each other
There has been a secessionist movement for years. Quebec doesn’t like other Canadians, and the feeling is pretty much mutual. We don’t have that in the U.S… you know, there aren’t any (Texas) big states (Texas) that think that they’re better (Texas) than the rest of the Union (Texas).

    It’s possible
Why go to the moon? Because it’s there. Same with Canada, it’s just colder than the moon.

Exactly right. This is more sophomronic nonsense from people who refuse to understand the world as it exists. They prefer to sit in Canada, who is kept free by the USA by the way, and moan and whine about America the Fourth Reich, the new Empire and all that.

That’s right. The only reason why we haven’t been invaded by Al-Qaeda’s forces and made to wear burkas is because of the U.S. The President of the United States is the only reason that any of us here have our freedom, so how dare we question or criticize the foreign policies that affect the entire world? We should just sit down, shut the fuck up, and let Daddy U.S.A. tell us what’s good for us and for everybody.

Clearly this article is the tragic, yet inevitable result of the Canadian health care system.

The only reason why we haven’t been invaded by Al-Qaeda’s forces and made to wear burkas is because of the U.S.

Nah, the weather keeps the IslamoHordes at bay.

Seriously, this makes the Betray Us ad seem like child’s play, especially if you believe – or pretend to believe – that Saddam was Hitler, Vlad the Impaler and Leona Helmsley all rolled into one. I wonder if Congress will issue a new resolution. MO.O turned the Resolution o’ Finger Wagging into a contribution drive, maybe magazines will want one for their subscription drives.

But rather than come up with an intelligent counter-insurgency policy, reach out to traditional tribal social structures and try to understand why American soldiers were getting killed, U.S. military leaders did what Americans have gotten very good at doing in the last few years. They made up a story, which they repeated on the news for U.S. domestic consumption—and then started to believe themselves. In this story, evil foreign terrorists led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a chubby Jordanian freelance terrorist, were setting upon the popular U.S. Army.

The President doesn’t need further authorization from Congress or the UN. _Saddam_ was in league with al-Qaeda, with the people who attacked us on September 11th. _McLean’s_ is providing aid and comfort to the enemy. In the wake of September 11th, our President made it clear who the enemy is:

Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. (Applause.) From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.

This supports the terrorists. _Canada_ is a hostile regime. In the past, _Canada_ has enriched uranium, and has a had successful nuclear weapons program. We cannot allow this smoking gun to become a mushroom cloud. We must combat terrorist _Canada_, to ensure the safety of the Western world.

How can we possibly say that the region is better off without Saddam. Its not! Iraq is being torn apart. Are the Iraqis better off today than they were 5 yrs ago. More Iraqis have died due to the war than under Saddam’s regime! They are starting to see the first cases of cholera in Bagdad. I think the world was better off with Saddam. Saddam kept the Iranians in check. He had control over the country! He gave them electicity and water and a sanitation system. The Iraqis were tortured for 30 yrs by a brutal dictator then they were destroyed by the Americans!

The saddest truth there is. Of course, the US is shopping around for a good brutal dictator to replace Saddam, its their last hope :(

Just as one is accused of being a pro-Saddam, Baathist sympathizer if you criticize the government in Baghdad, so one is accused of being a neo-con if you point out how deeply involved Iran has become in Iraq. The role Iran plays is as complex and shady as can be expected in a situation that is so murky on so many different levels, from neighbourhood turf wars to world oil strategies and a proxy war with America. But the U.S. government is right to be concerned, although it’s not clear they can do much except protest, threaten loudly, and fight a secret, dirty war.

Iraq, Iran’s neighbour to the west, is Tehran’s self-declared security zone. Iran has already been attacked once from Iraq—by a then-American ally, Saddam—and won’t let it happen again. Nor do the Iranians want, as the West does, a secular Iraqi government that could destabilize their own theocracy. For them, Iraq is a survival issue. U.S.-led invasions have conquered not only Iraq but Afghanistan on Iran’s eastern flank. The U.S. Navy is floating off Iranian shores. Every few weeks, Washington debates whether to bomb Iran. How could Iran afford not to be involved in Iraq? Following the American example, the Iranians have learned that it’s better to fight the U.S. on the streets of Baghdad than the streets of Tehran.

ah….realism. something that is in short supply these days.

Whenever Bush’s bitch-ass horse phobia (or, for the Lambchops out there, his super manly love of pickup trucks) comes up, I like to remind people that when I was a kid at summer camp even the little girls loved to ride horses.

That cover just exposes the Canadian evildoers who refuse to accept that 9/11 changed everything. When our valiant, horse-fearing Deciderator was there trying to sell our missile defense system that has so benefited from his magical touch, wasn’t there some Canadian MP who said Canada shouldn’t join a “Coalition of the Idiots”?

How dare they insinuate our president is stupid and a warmonger. Didn’t he say “I know the human being and the fish can coexist peacefully.” See, while those fish deserve to be freedomized, he doesn’t declare war on everything. Canadians just don’t see the big picture.

Yes, the right wing is crazy, they’re fixated and they talk on and on about things that don’t matter, looking for stuff to be offended by, but then so do we. After all, we spend far too much time talking about them. What does it matter? Yeah they’re crazy, I got it. If they start making sense about something let me know, that would be important. But otherwise there are other things to talk about.

It’s probably too much to hope for, but maybe they’ll come to the same conclusion about us. Yeah, we all hate the troops, we want to loose in Iraq, and we torture kittens when we think no one’s watching. Maybe we should all just admit it, so they can have their victory dance and go on and maybe talk about something important, like, uh, oh I don’t know, what the hell should we be doing in this country we invaded?

It’s easier to talk about the crazy opposition than to talk about what we should do, because it’s a tough problem. Most of the things I think we ought to be doing, we simply can’t do until there’s a new President. For example, we ought to be furiously engaging in diplomacy with all of Iraq’s neighbors, including ones we hate like Iran. Yeah, Iran’s a nasty place, they repress their people and fund terrorists. On the other hand, we’re no angels either; we started a war under false pretenses against the wishes of most of the world and in the process transformed a country into hell on earth. And besides, even if Iran is nasty, and our interests don’t coincide with theirs, there’s going to be some overlap, and there’s certainly room for negotiation. And even if that’s not possible and we need to use sticks and carrot, well, we need to talk to them to do that. We should at least be trying.

But anyway, none of that matters until 2008, because the current administration won’t do it, and that’s not something the congress can do on its own. One thing we should be pressing for is at least planning for withdrawal. Score another point for Hilary Clinton, she did press the military for their contingency plans for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Maybe there’s something to all the claims she’d make a good President because of her experience.

Regardless, making contingeny plans for withdrawal even if we’re not going to do it is simple sanity. We have contingency plans for using nukes in Iraq after all, which is completely insane, so we should have cotingency plans for things we might actually need to do some day. If the Shia ever turn against us en masse, it won’t be a matter of Republicans and Democrats debating whether we should leave; we’ll have to. Of course the under secretary replied, that even the discussion of such maters was irresponsible because it emboldened the enemy.

The under secretary’s disrespectful and unseemly response to a sitting senator make me thing there probably are no such contingency plans. We’re probably planning as well for our exit as we did for the occupation. If that’s true, it’s bad, because it’s not a simple matter to withdraw a hundred thousand troops and massive amounts of equipment out of a country wracked by civil war. We really ought to be making sure we have roads to the airport, secure supply lines, and maybe alternate routes and supply lines should the unexpected happen and the ones we have now fail.

So this is something we should be pressing for.

    Hello all,

I found this on “The Best of Craigslist” in the Bay Area. It’s from a Iraq veteran, and I thought it was worth a re-post here.

It goes right along with the topic du jour..

    Soliton

    —————————–

    http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sfo/309485032.html

I’m having the worst damn week of my whole damn life so I’m going to write this while I’m pissed off enough to do it right.

I am SICK of all this bullshit people are writing about the Iraq war. I am abso-fucking-lutely sick to death of it. What the fuck do most of you know about it? You watch it on TV and read the commentaries in the newspaper or Newsweek or whatever god damn yuppie news rag you subscribe to and think you’re all such fucking experts that you can scream at each other like five year olds about whether you’re right or not. Let me tell you something: unless you’ve been there, you don’t know a god damn thing about it. It you haven’t been shot at in that fucking hell hole, SHUT THE FUCK UP!

How do I dare say this to you moronic war supporters who are “Supporting our Troops” and waving the flag and all that happy horse shit? I’ll tell you why. I’m a Marine and I served my tour in Iraq. My husband, also a Marine, served several. I left the service six months ago because I got pregnant while he was home on leave and three days ago I get a visit from two men in uniform who hand me a letter and tell me my husband died in that fucking festering sand-pit. He should have been home a month ago but they extended his tour and now he’s coming home in a box.

You fuckers and that god-damn lying sack of shit they call a president are the reason my husband will never see his baby and my kid will never meet his dad.

And you know what the most fucked up thing about this Iraq shit is? They don’t want us there. They’re not happy we came and they want us out NOW. We fucked up their lives even worse than they already were and they’re pissed off. We didn’t help them and we’re not helping them now. That’s what our soldiers are dying for.

Oh while I’m good and worked up, the government doesn’t even have the decency to help out the soldiers whos lives they ruined. If you really believe the military and the government had no idea the veterans’ hospitals were so fucked up, you are a god-damn retard. They don’t care about us. We’re disposable. We’re numbers on a page and they’d rather forget we exist so they don’t have to be reminded about the families and lives they ruined while they’re sipping their cocktails at another fund raiser dinner. If they were really concerned about supporting the troops, they’d bring them home so their families wouldn’t have to cry at a graveside and explain to their children why mommy or daddy isn’t coming home. Because you can’t explain it. We’re not fighting for our country, we’re not fighting for the good of Iraq’s people, we’re fighting for Bush’s personal agenda. Patriotism my ass. You know what? My dad served in Vietnam and NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

So I’m pissed. I’m beyond pissed. And I’m going to go to my husband’s funeral and receive that flag and hang it up on the wall for my baby to see when he’s older. But I’m not going to tell him that his father died for the stupidity of the American government. I’m going to tell him that his father was a hero and the best man I ever met and that he loved his country enough to die for it, because that’s all true and nothing will be solved by telling my son that his father was sent to die by people who didn’t care about him at all.

Fuck you, war supporters, George W. Bush, and all the god damn mother fuckers who made the war possible. I hope you burn in hell.

“I believe the United States and our allies should deliver a very clear message to Iran, very clear, very sober, very serious: They will not be allowed to become a nuclear power. It’s just not going to happen,” Giuliani said at a midday campaign fundraising lunch.

“If they get to the point that they’re going to become a nuclear power, we will prevent it, or we will set them back five or 10 years,” he added.

“It isn’t a threat, it’s just a reality. And I think if that reality sinks in, there is a better chance that we will never have to use a military option to deal with them,” he said.

He’s also caling for Israel to join Nato.

Usually its meant to cause action in the ranks, but I wonder by now if the entire political machine is exhausting itself. Outrage fatigue might finally be setting in.

I think this is right. For all the blasts of hot air regarding the Betray Us ad, I haven’t heard one person mention it at work or anywhere else. Despite the best efforts of Fox News, et al, people are not that outraged about an ad in a newspaper they don’t even read about a guy they realize is being used by the administration. And I think most people think Petraeus is a decent guy, in a Colin Powell kind of way. We’ve been here before.

This is exactly like the John Kerry flubbed joke. The wingers think they’ve struck gold. The Beltway types are apoplectic and the country doesn’t care. And as soon as there is another election they are going to kick the living shit out of Republicans. Nothing has changed.

    So true.

This morning on the Diane Rehm Show, the entirely conservative panel (not sure how the fuck that happened) made up of Clarence Page, Byron York and John Harwood were all true to form regarding the MoveOn ad.

The emails and callers all pretty much had the same thing to say about the situation – to paraphrase:

Why the fuck is congress wasting their time on a goddamn AD when we are losing people and money everyday in Iraq? When the fuck is congress going to get down to the actual business of getting us the hell out of there?

An emailer also wondered why the media kept saying that MoveOn accused Patraeus of treason when the ad clearly asked “General Betray Us?” Byron York said he couldn’t be bothered by the “rhetorical flair” of the punctuation and that the ad pretty much accused him of treason, in his opinion. The other panelists said the emailer had a point, but they were too busy patting each other on the back to disagree with York.

After that, I had to turn the radio off.

Apparently getting the US Senate to slap your hand is good for fundraising according to the email I just got from MoveOn:

“By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more than we’ve raised any day this year—for our new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.

The message from MoveOn members was loud and clear: Don’t back down. Take the fight back to the issues that matter.

So today we’re shooting for a very ambitious goal: Reach $1 million so we can dramatically expand the campaign we launched yesterday going after politicians who support this awful war.”

Gee, the adults in the Senate don’t seem to know how to properly discipline their base eh? MoveOn has every encouragement to make the next ad as vicious as possible.

Iran doesn’t sell oil to us but it hardly matters; it’s a world market, not to mention the mischief they could cause in the strait of Hormuz. I suspect he has thought of this, and I suspect (hope!) we’re not going to start a war with Iran. Predictions of war with Iran have been making the rounds of liberal blog sites for years, and nothing has happened yet. The last I heard, there was going to be a big push for war after labor day, but I certainly haven’t seen any signs of it.

That doesn’t mean the Democrats shouldn’t be pushing hard to rescind the AUMF; I’d like to have more to depend on than the sanity of this administration. Still, at this point (*knock wood and rub my lucky horse shoe*) I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I asked yesterday (what does the GOP think it can gain by these attacks). I think Rick took a stab at it but I just am baffled at what they think the endgame is (apart from Bush & candidates for the GOP nomination).

If you are a blue-state Senator or Representative participating in these attacks means that you are helping to direct attention and credibility towards an organization that is commited to removing you from office. These attacks aren’t going to directly persuade anyone one way or the other, but they will help MoveOn’s fundraising efforts nationally, which will help unseat more blue state GOPers.

And wasn’t Dick Cheney a member of that administration?

I’m just not ready to take all the Iran war stuff at face value yet.

I saw that one about half an hour ago — so I scraped the loose change and lint out of my pants pocket and sent it to ’em. And it’s the first time I’ve done anything like that; I’m not a big MoveOn fan.

But if MoveOn wants to play hardball then fine, let’s have some hardball; it’s long past time somebody started it.

Good Lord, that Gathering of Eagles incident is insane. A father marching in a rally with a photo of his son, a deceased Marine, and these total strangers decide that the photo was “being held hostage” by “captors” and “needed rescue.”

A mourning father with a photo of his slain son is a “captor” holding his own dead son “hostage”? I knew these idiots were infantile, but it looks like they’ve regressed to an even more childish and pathetic level, if possible.

Gathering of Eagles found a father of a fallen Marine to beat up along the route: Carlos Arredondo, who marches in anti-war demonstrations pulling a flag-draped coffin adorned with a picture of his son.

Oh, this is painful. Back in 2004, the father of the marine when he found his son had died in Iraq poured gasoline on a van and lit it on fire while he was inside.

In protests he pulls a coffin with pictures of his son on it.

The member of the gathering of eagles, according to his own post on their forum, took one of the pictures and walked away with it. He wrote:

    gatheringofeagles.org/forum?forum=3&topic=1002&page=1

My teams broke up at the Capitol,
mission accomplished, and I was walking alone back to the Mall when I saw
the photo-image of a proud young Marine in dress blues being held hostage in
company not of his own choosing and affixed to a coffin not his own.
    The
insult to his honor and disrespect to his Corps and cause by his captors was
    immediately obvious and intended.
These same peddlers of provocation are
paid to push their coffin-prop all over the country they revile. They subvert
a common will and undermine the cause and country for which this hostage-Marine
    had sacrificed his very life.
The captive Marine was not among his
own. He was surrounded and outnumbered by those who shamelessly exploit his
image and memory, disgrace his uniform, his brothers in arms, and his
    willing sacrifice.
He would never choose such company.
    He needed a
    rescue…
I liberated his image from the midst of the hostile crowd,
intending to replace it in a position of honor Arlington, where he would rest
with heroes and among his own …I respectfully carried the image of the
fallen Marine and was not opposed nor confronted in any way until I has walked
perhaps 25 yards down the sidewalk.
There, I was attacked without warning and
tackled from behind by a demonstrator who crashed into my back at a full run.
I went down forward, tearing pants knees and shirt sleeve and five separate
    wounds requiring hospital attention.
The Marine’s image, along with camera
and sunglasses were smashed into the pavement. Before I could respond, six
or so Eagles-vets were immediately pulling me away from the anti-war attacker.

The whole thing is so fucked up. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming their account of what happened is entirely accurate, the Gathering of Eagles’ people are so painfully self-righeously arrogant, it’s unbelievable. At the same time, as grotesque as it may have been to remove the man’s son’s picture from the casket, it doesn’t look like they initiated the physical attack, and it’s not clear yet how violent their response was. Given how the father reacted when his son died, I could easily imagine him over-reacting when of these jerks walked up and just took the picture of his son away.

The whole thing is just excruciating, though. And what I’m really afraid of is both sides in the debate over the war are going to use this to make political hay and stir up more hatred towards the other, as though there isn’t enough already. Our side is going to go on about how these people are representative of all war supporters, and the right wing is going to go on about nutball protesters and how the the man who took the picture was attacked. I can see it already.

Can we head it off at the pass? Maybe our side could admit that while the Gathering of Eagles people were first class jerks, they don’t represent the right wing in general? And maybe the right wing could forebear accusing liberals of making up stories about liberals being victims or being responsible for the father’s actions? And maybe we could all admit we don’t know everything that happened, and that regardless it really doesn’t have much to do with what we should be doing about Iraq? Maybe each side could avoid using this painful event to demonize the other?

They’re big, clumsy and insanely stupid. I have no idea how they survive in the wild.

For a second there, I thought you were talking about the Bush family!

But, as far as horses “surviving” in the wild… mostly, they don’t. Habitat destruction has effectively destroyed the Asian rootstock from which our domestic animals are descended. The *original* wild horses evolved in America, but that bloodline disappeared at the same time as the cave lions and American mastodons. What we know as “wild horses” in the modern American Southwest are the descendants of feral domestic horses; that’s why they can be rounded up for “adoption” as pets. (A “wild horse” that’s ten generations away from its domestic roots can be trained to accept a human rider; a zoo-bred zebra that’s ten generations away from its African “homeland”, not so much.)

Basically, horses survived by becoming parasites — okay, symbionts — to the burgeoning human population. Any parallels with Republicans, well…

We have been taken way beyond the Marquess of Queensbury rules here. It is an eye-gouging, ear-pulling, nose-biting fight, so fight it, already.

‘Let us not speak of the Dreyfus Affair‘? We should always be disgusted, and ready to fight, about the Dreyfus Affair. Or we may end up with our own Vichy government some day. Stay pissed of about Sacco and Vanzetti. Read that lefty Felix Frankfurter’s March, 1927 essay in The Atlantic, and if that does not make you mad, and keep you angry, please stay out of this fight. Rick,

Given how the father reacted when his son died, I could easily imagine him over-reacting when of these jerks walked up and just took the picture of his son away.

I don’t agree. To me, an “over-reaction” would have involved lethal violence. Anything less and you’re in the terrain of “appropriate reaction”.

Our side is going to go on about how these people are representative of all war supporters, and the right wing is going to go on about nutball protesters and how the the man who took the picture was attacked. I can see it already.

I agree somewhat, but play out the implications. Our side may go on to some degree about how these people are representative of all war supporters but it/we will overall continue to focus on the main job of ending the war through peaceful, legitimate, non-violent means. Meanwhile the right will indeed go on about nutball protesters, and wrap themselves in the flag as they organize attacks on the protesters because their only hope of maintaining the flagging support for the war is to attack its opponents.

Can we head it off at the pass?

Probably not. The space for compromise and equivocation is disappearing pretty rapidly.

Maybe our side could admit that while the Gathering of Eagles people were first class jerks, they don’t represent the right wing in general?

Problem is, they actually do represent a lot of the right wing in general. There are a lot of conservative people (from people like Andrew Sullivan, Greg Djerejian, Pat Lang, John Cole, to a number of commenters here) who they don’t represent, but the right wing pro-war, pro-Bush movement per se? If there’s any distance there I’m not seeing it.

And maybe the right wing could forebear accusing liberals of making up stories about liberals being victims or being responsible for the father’s actions? And maybe we could all admit we don’t know everything that happened, and that regardless it really doesn’t have much to do with what we should be doing about Iraq?

Since I don’t in fact know everything that happened, I’m willing to file it all away as data and move on. Just watch, though: the people around GOE are going to bleat about it endlessly for about a week and a half (that is, until their next faux cause for outrage bursts upon the scene) because that’s how they build their organizations. For the left, it’s just a terrible incident; for the right it’s both an end and a means.

    Punchy Says:
    1) Does Iran sell oil to the US?
    2) What would happen if they just stopped selling it for 3 months?
    3) Has Bush thought of this?

    1) I don’t know myself, but if Rick says no, I’ll assume he’s right for now.
    2) World oil production would go down, but if (1) is true, America’s supply would not be affected. Therefore the price of oil by the barrel would go up (and the price at the pump in America would go up somewhat but maybe not as much as elsewhere). So oil companies would rake in the cash, but Americans would only get somewhat pissed off rather than furious.
    3) Massive profits for oil companies, and the only downsides are slight recession and electoral harm to the Republican Party, and come on, it’s not like anyone in the administration is running for anything? I doubt this scenario is likely, because however much it would hurt the rest of the world, it would hurt Iran even more to go without that revenue, so they probably wouldn’t do it. But still, let’s hope to God that Bush hasn’t thought of it. Fortunately, that’s usually a safe bet.
