Mountaineers v. ECU.
Go Eers!

48-7, and kinda boring. Not the kind of game I was hoping for, since I think they needed a tough game before heading to Florida.

Er, are we assumed to know who ECU is? Sounds like a medical lab or a scan.
Equal Opportunity Cynic
No offense, John, but I have a hard time pulling for WVU because they just remind me too much of a misplaced SEC program. In some ways that’s a compliment — obsessive fan support, perennial BCS contender — but so much of the college football culture here in the South just makes me uncomfortable, even though I’m a huge fan of the sport. It’s like a guilty pleasure for me, except that as a Vanderbilt fan it’s more like a guilty agony.
At any rate, one thing I am very happy about is that the Big East has stuck it to the ACC. I really thought the way they cannibalized your league was obnoxious, and the way that they’ve gotten worse since the grab and the BE has gotten better really warms my heart. :)

It’s frighening how divided we’ve become as a country. Looking at the upcoming elections, every single one of the Republican candidates would be unacceptable to me; I’d be horrified if any of them won. Every single one.
Sure I’ve been liberal for a long time, and I’ve always wanted my side to win; I was horrified when Bush won in 2000. But I’ve never felt like this, where in an open election with the field wide open before the primaries have begun there isn’t even one candidate on the Republican side that doesn’t scare me. There are a few sane Republicans out there like Lugar, but they’re not running for President.
And I suspect the other side feels exactly the same way I do. I suspect none of the “defeatocrats” currently running would be acceptable to them, they think they all are determined to surrender.
I have no idea what to do about this (except work to ensure the Democrats win the election), but it sure is striking. And troubling.
Rick Taylor
Hey, are there any conservatives out there reading this? Among the Democratic candidates for the Presidency, which one would horrify you least as President? If you tell me, it might even influence me to vote for them. Almost all the Democratic candidates are acceptable to me, and I really really really want to win this election. If we swear in President Giuliani in 2008, I’m seriously considering fleeing to England. Plus I’m not happy with the way the country has been divided, and while I want to win, I would like also not to divide the country even further.
So who do you like, or rather, who makes you the least sick? I will confess I don’t understand conservatives one bit. We elected a philandering non-inhaling charming good-ol-boy, and you hated his guts. We nominated a pedantic slightly overbearing southern policy wonk, and you hated him too. Then we went and nominated a boring stick-up-his-butt Vietnam vet,and you hated him almost as much. So I confess, I have no clue. Well I do know you hate loathe and despise Hillary Clinton. I don’t understand it, but I do know it. But aside from that, I have no clue.
How about Biden? He wants us out of Iraq, but he at least has a plan, even if it’s one you don’t like. Or Edwards? He’s at least not one of those North Eastern intellectuals you seem to hate. Or Obama? He talks about bringing the country together. I doubt you’d like Dodd, as he’s been the most outspoken about getting out of Iraq, but if you would, I’d be glad to vote for him. I’d be glad to vote for any of them, I just want them to win.
John, you must have an opinion on this; you’re still in touch with your Hillary-loathing side. Of the Democratic candidates, who do you think would be least unacceptable to conservatives?
Rick Taylor
Fair is fair. Since I’m asking conservatives who they dislike least among the Democratic candidates for the Presidency, it’s only fair for me to choose who I’d pick among the Republican candidates. I have to say it’s a really tough choice; they all scare me. But if you tied me down and tortured me until I picked one, I’d have to select Mitt Romney. It is a sign of my desperation that I’d pick Mitt-let’s-double-Guantanamo-Romney, but I’d have to say among the leading candidates he seems to me to be the most likely to be a competent President among the Republicans. Eight years ago I would have picked McCain, but something seems to have happened to him. He’s making so many gaffes, that episode where he talked about being able to shop in a Baghdad marketplace safely, singing let’s bomb Iran. He jokes around and he doesn’t seem to able to talk about the issues as cogently as he used to. As much as I passionately disagree with Mitt Romney, he seems able to string sentences together to make coherent arguments. I wouldn’t pick Ron Paul, because despite the fact I like some of the things he says about Iraq, a libertarian who wants to return the gold standard is just way too far out there, and his isolationist leanings go too far for me. Fred Thompson doesn’t appear ready for prime time, and as I mentioned, Giuliani scares the crap out of me. Giuliani is to me as Hillary is to you. It’s wild they’re the front runners; this could be an incredibly divisive election.
Geoduck
McCain is a tired old man. He should be preparing to leave public life, not trying to claim the most stressful job in the entire world.
And I agree that Romney’s probably the best of a horrible lot.

I heard a rumor that the Louisville Home Depot has temporarily banned the sale of rope, bedsheets, knives, and books on knots.
Possibly related, the Syracuse Lowe’s has completely run out of funnels, assorted connecting hose, coolers, and orange paint.
Someone should look into these strange happenings.

This seems to be a football thread, let’s stick to football:
1) Louisville has no defense, they’re giving up too many points (three teams scoring more than 38 points per game already!).
2) Our South Florida Bulls are ready for West Virginia. They’ve opened up the upper deck of the RayJay for this one, we’re expecting 65,000 plus, they don’t even get that for the Bucs games lately. Me and the folks are in sect.239 this Friday night. Come get some.
3) Michigan won again against a half-decent Penn St. team, so I guess we *can* start counting that App State upset as one of the biggest ofalltime.
4) Notre Dame is starting to look like the ’76 Bucs. What are the odds now on the Fizzled Irish going winless?
5) The angels have the phone box. No wait, that should go to the Dr. Who thread…

Hey, anybody here anything about this rumor that General Betrayus war a Bronze star that he didn’t appropriately earn?
Just curious, I heard something about it somewhere.
Rick Taylor
Yes I did. A poster on daily kos wrote about it, and another poster on redstate wrote a thread to gloat about it. I found it disgusting all around; a low point on both blogs.

John,
Long time reader. First time poster.
My $00.02, would be that Michigan has a lot of ‘splaining to do, and my cat’s breath smells like cat food.

Have plenty of bottled water and food on hand.
Have a current passport.
Make sure you have gas in the car.
Avoid being the vicinity of military bases or government buildings for the next couple of years.
Keep your will current.

It doesn’t count as a smear if you merely ask whether it’s true. :-)

Looks like all the right wing bloggers John Cole was slamming were right.

Hopefully Mr. Cole will give a mea culpa. Not that he cares what I think, but I used to admire him for his integrity.

There still is ZERO reporting and ZERO evidence that the NY Times did anything out of the ordinary, but the treason of the NY Times is now established āfactā on the right. And no one, and I repeat, NO ONE, will challenge them. And this is how it goes, day in, day out, as they fling things against the wall and hope they stick to their pre-existing opinions, and reify them for their own political purposes. – John Cole on 9/13
Yeah, how could anyone question the NY Times? I thought dissent and questioning were to be admired. Perhaps not.

I disagree.
I think this blowout is exactly what this team needs.
ECU has been a thorn in our side the past few years, playing us tough and well into the 4th quarter.
This finally get s past that bump we always seem to have and more conifendce heading into the first big game of the year.
