Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

We will not go back.

No one could have predicted…

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

I was just curious how many of you watched CBS Sunday Morning. I stumbled on to it several months ago, and it quickly has become a Sunday morning ritual. It reminds me of NPR on television.

Good stuff.

I love CBS Sunday Morning. I’ve been watching since Charles Kuralt was the host. The show has been on for almost twenty years; and I remember watching it with my mother as a teenager. It’s something that still bonds us. My mom calls me almost every Sunday to discuss one (or more) of the segments.

I do sometimes have to wonder just how sheltered a life you have lived Mr. Cole.

Just this week we learned you did not know NOT to put dish soap in the dishwasher and that you just discovered a show that has been on television for at least a quarter century.

    Just some advice in advance.

Don’t bathe with your hair dryer and don’t stick metal in your microwave. ;-)

I used to go out to brunch every Sunday morning, or watch ESPN.

I had watched CBS Sunday Morning in the past, but not religiously. However, about 6 months ago, I was bored on a Sunday morning, turned it on, and was struck by how good, how long, how well-produced, and how in-depth the pieces were.

It isn’t so much that I just discovered the show, it is that I discovered my tastes have changed enough that I really appreciate the show.

The wingnuts hate NPR. Liberal Bias!!

Seriously though, you can’t top BBC World News for the most cold, rational reading of the news anywhere. Not too in-depth, though. But good to wake up to.

Since the ’80s I’ve watched the show. One of the best parts of the show are the last 30 seconds. Just beautiful. It was a family ritual when I was a kid that we would watch before we headed out to Eagles games.

I TiVo it, watch the “table of contents” description of what’s to come, and then use triple-fast-forward to skip the segments I’m not interested in and the commercials (there does seem to be a great many commercials). Always watch the “We leave you now…” segment, but it seems to be getting shorter and shorter.

An interesting thing about triple-fast-forward: when you’re using it to skip through the half-hour of football that pushes back the start of 60 Minutes, the game clock at the top right runs in approximately real time.

I prefer George Snuffalupagus on ABC. At least his guests are reasonable.

Try watching Fox News on Sunday morning. It’s physically hard to do. You learn stuff there that you’ve never known before. Not in a good (read: honest) way.

We aren’t talking about the same thing, the CBS Sunday Morning show is before Schieffer.

And I like Schieffer best out of all of them because he takes no shit.

If you like Sunday Morning, CBS has another one on Sunday evening you might like.

    It’s called 60 Minutes.

I discovered CBS Sunday Morning when I was doing a lot of acid. It was generally coming on about the same time I was coming down and the calm, slow-paced nature of the show was just what I needed. The ‘quiet place’ feature at the end was always welcome after a night on powerful psychedelics.

Also, their sun logo thing can look really trippy.

“when the head of BBC resigned following the “sexed-up dossier” episode, the entire network went into the toilet. all of a sudden the government’s word was good enough for them. disgraceful.”

We are living in the era of government willfully intimidating media, if only by controlling access.

And I like Schieffer best out of all of them because he takes no shit.

I like the CBS Sunday Morning Show myself. Don’t watch it religiously, but it’s good news, and I like the soft nature of it… especially the end of the show. Very soothing and calming.

Schieffer went on a rant today about Blackwater. Basically how our fucked up leadership tried to do things on the cheep, and they figured it would be easier for them to hire companies like Blackwater than admit they didn’t have enough Marines. Then they were too stupid to put any controls in place to begin with, so they let these guys run outside the law until they fucked up pretty badly.

    That guy I like.

Sometime CBS is going to wake up to the disaster that is Katie Couric and fire her ass. Maybe they’ll put on Bob Schieffer again.

Also agree, that I like the roundtables on Snuffalupagus’s show. Gotta admit, David Brinkley was much better than George back in the day, but whatever. The roundtables with Fareed Zakaria, George Will and such are damn good. Can’t stand that Cokie Roberts, but Sam Donaldson is entertaining.

Bob, Tivo has a 30 second skip, it’s just hidden.

On the remote hit Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select and you should hear three chimes. This will turn your Beginning and End buttons into 30 sec skip ahead and 10 second skip back.

Warning, if you are watching Live TV it’ll flip your channel, so it’s best to do while watching something pre-recorded. It also resets every time the Tivo reboots.

Schieffer is the best journalist on TV.

Can someone tell me who the musical guest was? I’m trying to find out for my girlfriend. She mentioned something about a former punk rock band that changed.

There wasn’t a guest, it was a music review of upcoming releases. You can read about it here, but the band your GF is talking about is Rilo Kiley.

For my money, the Krauss/Plant and the Lyle Lovett looked the best out of the reviews. The Springsteen looked solid, too.

Ninerdave, thanks. I do know about and use the 30-second skip. However, since I’m also skipping entire segments and the commercials are legion, it’s more awkward for that show than 3-clicks-fast-forward. I didn’t know it did that for live watching; I guess I never watch live. I have my TiVo on a UPS, in part so that I don’t have to reset the skip (and the now playing sorting) every time there’s a power glitch.

Ben Stein came on a while ago to tell us all the the housing market bubble bursting was minor, would have no effect on our economy, and certainly wouldn’t have international repercussions.

Well, Mr. N. Skull, the housing bubble has burst but equity prices seem to be staying up and US employment seems to be growing at a sustainable pace.

Signals seem to be mixed. You seem like a smart fella, Skull, can YOU tell me how its goin’?

The Springsteen is amazingly solid. He’s entirely different (and in my opinion, a much better artist) when he’s surrounded by the E-Street Band.

And the CD was worth the price for the picture of Miami Steve alone.

I record it and we watch it later every week.

We also love the last 5 minutes (Although it seems they have shortened it some – too bad! We liked it when it was a full 5 minutes.)

We love the coverage of the arts and more in depth bits, along with the commentaries by Nancy Giles and the humorous bits with Bill Geist.

It’s one of the best shows on TV.

    Since 1979, but only sporadically.

I also still miss the original Linda Ellerbee NBC News Overnight.
