Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Let me file that under fuck it.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Everybody saw this coming.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

The NY Times:

A Myanmar opposition leader who was arrested during last month’s mass protests against the junta died due to torture during interrogation, an activist group said on Wednesday.

In Washington, the United States threatened new sanctions against Myanmar after media reports of the death of Win Shwe.

“The junta must stop the brutal treatment of its people and peacefully transition to democracy or face new sanctions from the United States,” White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a statement.

The White House did not say what additional sanctions it was considering on the former Burma, but it called for a full investigation into Win Shwe’s death.

This presents a tough call for the patriots at Townhall/the NRO/Red State. Do they get outraged at this murder, do they argue it was just a few bad apples on the night shift, or do they present the legal case for enhanced interrogation techniques?

I’ll take option D) The Myanmar military regime is a brutal dictatorship, much like the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussien. Democrats clearly sympathize with the Myanmar military regime, because of its communist leanings and dark skin. We’d totally do something about this, but the Democrats would oppose it. Myanmar is, therefore, the Democrats’ fault. Vote Republican in ’08.

C’mon, we haven’t tortured that many prisoners to death. We only know about two or three.

I’m not sure what you are talking about John. These guys are torturing people. We have been clear that we only perform extraordinary renditions and enhanced interrogation techniques. It’s a big difference. One is torture, the other is not, by definition. The big mistake was the junta not having a good PR campaign like our guys do. We also have the moral high ground on our side because we are the United States and they are not, and everyone knows when we do those things (which no still isn’t torture of course) it is for everyone’s own good.

Ahhh, put its much simplier than that.

    Bush said “We don’t torture”

See, thats it. We’re done. They torture, we don’t (if you have problems, please speak to Billy down in Cell Block B, and he’ll explain it to you, long and hard.)

When I first read the title I thought it said Let the Lap Dancing Begin in Earnest.

I was so there, then you started spewing your Bush Derangement Syndrome shrillitude and I was disappointed.

Option E. Dana Perino has already provided the answer: Those tortured in Myanmar are “very innocent”. The people we torture don’t meet that standard; after all, they may only be “not guilty”.

No, he was too busy dismantling the military, destroying our economy and letting Saddam and bin Laden plan 9/11 together to do these sorts of things. Have you been watching Communist News Network instead of getting your information from a “Fair and Balanced”(TM) source?

No, he was too busy dismantling the military, destroying our economy, getting blowjobs, letting Saddam and bin Laden plan 9/11 together, and murdering people to do these sorts of things.

You forgot a couple, Mr. Moderate.

Also, you need more concern trolling if you’re going to use that handle. Go into the BJ archives and search for posts by Cassidy if you need some guidance.

Oh right. Sometimes I get the talking points mixed up…I don’t know why–there aren’t that many of them and they’re repeated again and again. I guess I’m just slow. I’ll go listen to some more of Rudy’s speeches and review my flashcards.

What, already you’re not able to think like a wingnut just because you’re getting a new voter registration card? Sweet Jesus, easy answer. He didn’t die of the torture, he died of unrelated natural causes. Don’t badmouth torture alternative interrogation simply because of a coincidence.

Like this guy who was in our custody. Sure he was being interrogated while no doubt getting two types of fruit during the process, but he died of natural asphyxiation accidentally. His first death certificate said so. You gotta keep dry cleaning and sleeping bags away from these guys because if you’re not watching they irresistibly dive head first into them. Crazy Iraqis. Afghanis too.

Phew. I thought this was another Craig List.

I’m with Pb. They won’t say a thing about it. There’s no way to spin it that would help them, so it never happened.

You mean none of the Tightie fRighties have suggested:

    1. The detainee was a terrorist.

    2. Things like this wouldn’t happen if the DemoNcRats would just stop complaining about the President’s plan to unleash peace via war on the world.

    3. Of course the Burmese government won’t listen to the President when he murmurs: “Hey, maybe you guys could cut that out?” (while glancing uneasily at China). The Leftards are so rude to him other nations have lost respect.

    4. The kerning is off on the photos.

    Shocking.

Maybe they’re too busy trying huffing and puffing because someone dared to mention Turkey was once unpleasant to a large chunk of its population.

OOH!!! The “junta” is shaking in their military boots over that one. Ever since they heard Dubyah speak out for spreading Freedom & Democracy all over the world they’ve been watching their P’s & Q’s, just praying they could slide in under this Administration’s Tyranny Radar.

Now that they’ve overplayed their hand, well, they’re in BIG trouble, you’ll see – You betcha’.

[…] 2.) How will they respond to Bush’s nominee saying what is roughly the same damned thing as Dick Durbin? Will they demand his nomination be shot down? Will they slander him, call him a twat and a dumbass and tell him to go fuck himself? Will they break out the epsom salts and begin the necessary gymnastics to pretend this statement by Mukasey is somehow substantively different? Or will they ignore it completely, just like they completely ignored the murder of Win Shwe, who was tortured to death in Myanmar last week (and we couldn’t really say anything, because we have no credibility on the subject of torture anymore)?
