Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

We’re not going back!

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

This really is a full service blog.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

In a move that will surprise approximately no one, the latest Bush appointee to head a program in the HHS is a nutter from the FRC who opposes contraception:

The Bush administration again has appointed a chief of family planning programs at the Department of Health and Human Services who has been critical of contraception.

Susan Orr, most recently an associate commissioner in the Administration for Children and Families, was appointed Monday to be acting deputy assistant secretary for population affairs. She will oversee $283 million in annual grants to provide low-income families and others with contraceptive services, counseling and preventive screenings.

In a 2001 article in The Washington Post, Orr applauded a Bush proposal to stop requiring all health insurance plans for federal employees to cover a broad range of birth control. “We’re quite pleased, because fertility is not a disease,” said Orr, then an official with the Family Research Council.

At this point, I suppose there is really not much to say other than “Elections mean things.” If you are sick to death of this kind of absurd bullshit, you have an option, You can vote against these idiots in 2008. Or, you can deal with the consequences.

As a side note, not to go all Ron Paul on you, but why the hell do we even need this damned office?

*** Update ***

According to Think Progress, Orr has also stated that contraceptives are part of the “culture of death.” I guess this leads me to inevitably conclude that my penis has, at numerous times over the past few decades, officially been a weapon of mass destruction.

*** Update #2 ***

A somewhat popular blogger observes:

I hear the cries of millions of sperm screaming as they suffocate within their rubbery prison…which is ribbed for her pleasure

According to George Bush’s new director of federal family planning programs at the Department of Health and Human Services, if you use a condom, you are part of the “culture of death”.

Looks like we’re going to need to add another definition to ‘spermicide’.

Heh. Indeed.

so, let’s see if I have this straight:

Republicans think women should get preggers every time they have sex.

But if your children end up needing government assistance with health insurance, well you should have either planned ahead better or just not had any kids.

Ergo, Republicans are against sex for proles, who typically do not have 100% guaranteed lifetime financial security.

So I guess that leaves abstinence, masturbation or hawt down-low gay sex in public restrooms as the only options for them.

More or less for the same reasons we need the FDA, the SEC, and the Surgeon General. HHS is supposed to do research on what does and does not work for family planning and health guidelines. It’s HHS that encourages people to get flu shots and mammograms, and they’re supposed to be a reliable source of information for when a doctor or a layperson has to answer the question “Is this treatment safe and effective for me?”

Putting a shill in HHS is a pure propaganda move that lets the Bush Admin distribute bullshit information like “Abortions cause breast cancer” and “Condoms don’t ever work”. But when the agency functions properly, its supposed to help people help themselves by providing actual intelligent advice.

I’m sure you can see how this office can get easily politicized.

I know that this is a little off the reservation, but there is a medical condition that very few insurance plans cover (I haven’t found any group plan coverage available in states that don’t require this to be covered by law) and that is infertility. If fertility isn’t a disease, could we please agree that not being able to make babies is not the natural order of things, it means that somebody’s body isn’t working the way it should be, and therefore ought to be covered by health insurance plans?

You know, I used to believe that social cons had a point WRT abortion. I always thought “The Handmaid’s Tale” was hysterical literature. I’m not sure I believe that anymore.

Now I’m starting to think that Cons simply want to make life miserable for other people. “Saving babies” has nothing to do with it. That’s why these folks are so crazy over contraception and gay marriage.

It never had anything to do with “morality”. It was always about authoritarian conservatives forcing their will on other people.

Hey did you know divorced women aren’t really women?

…as early as the 1970s, women were more likely to express a liberal understanding of marriage and divorce than men were. Today, they are aggressively acting out those liberal sentiments.

Yes, it is aggressive manly librul women who up and leave their poor husbands. Orr of course doesn’t look at the reasons women might be leaving their husbands because she isn’t quite insane enough to suggest. However:

Therapists who work with troubled marriages often say that if the woman wants out, she’s made up her mind and there’s no changing it. Men are much more amenable to recommitting to their families and trying to fix the problem.

Sounds like Orr is making a convincing argument for marriage between men.

Not surprisingly, more women entered the labor force after no-fault divorce reforms were passed that protected them and their earning potential in the event of a marital break-up.

Holy fuck. Phyllis fucking Schlafly v. 2.0 will be in charge of a major HHS division.

The people and sites defining conservatism and the Republican Party today are all social conservative, from right wing pundits like Rush Limbaugh, to sites like Townhall.com, from NRO to the many right wing bloggers. And even if many RW bloggers claim not to be social cons they still promote them, like Allahpundit who promotes Malkin at Hotair. Well, I thought masturbation was right out as well. It causes madness or cooties or something. But she does seem to sorta kinda conflict with the blessed Michelle who thinks that couples that can’t afford health insurance shouldn’t get preggers, married or not. I have a meditation piece from Great Literature for the whole lot of the wingers, seeing as the holiday season is fast approaching.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”

“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish I could say they were not.”

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.

    “Both very busy, sir.”

“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”

“Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,” returned the gentleman, “a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?”

    “Nothing!” Scrooge replied.

    “You wish to be anonymous?”

“I wish to be left alone,” said Scrooge. “Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned — they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there.”

“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Besides — excuse me — I don’t know that.”

“But you might know it,” observed the gentleman.

“It’s not my business,” Scrooge returned. “It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!”

Get your ass in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans bitch.

    It’s more than that, though.

The right shrieks about personal responsibility, and not having kids if you can’t afford them. That may seem fine on the surface, but the policies that the right favours, make it nigh well impossible for the middle-class and below to afford health insurance, a house, schooling, etc. They’re opposed to abortion, they’re opposed to contraception, and they’re opposed to people having kids if they “can’t afford them.” (i.e. if they use any goverment assistance). So, if I’m middle-class, I’d really like to know what it is that the right wants me to do. You don’t want me to have children, but you don’t want me to go on the pill or have an abortion. So am I just supposed to pop out babies and sell them to rich people with fertility issues?

Sometimes it just seems that there are many on the right who just want the poor and the working class to clean their streets, serve their food, manufacture their products, and then quietly shut the fuck up and disappear when not needed.

Tinfoil hat alert: in a way, it’s probably good that they can’t replace all blue-collar and service jobs with machines. If they did, and the working class were no longer “needed”, sometimes I think that there are an awful lot of people who would be more than happy to just let them starve out and die.

Umm…let’s see…let me absorb that comment…OK – got it…So here, smoke on this:

BULLSHIT! Mister, you have NO IDEA as to exactly what the “majority” thinking is on these issues.

Mr. Bush was re-elected for the most part because he was able to convince just enough voters in just enough of the right states that Mr. Kerry was a poor candidate for the Presidency and he was able to do so largely because Mr. Kerry did such a feckless job of defining his candidacy and sat on his hands while his service record was denigrated, distorted and eventually villified by unproven and demonstrably false smears generated by an organized chorus of Right-Wing liars and nut-jobs. At this point I know of very few people who are “thanking God” or anyone else that Mr. Bush occupies the White House. At best most folks just wish he would go away, although a growing segment would like to see him tossed out on his ass and criminally charged for a growing list of malfeasances that have badly damaged the carefully thought out and hard-won 200-year-old foundations of our country. Bush is an absolute disgrace and however and whenever he finally leaves office will not be a moment too soon for most of us.

is some astonishing drivel. I think the percentage of “values voters” during 2004 was something like 22%. So, 300 million Americans during the 2004 Presidential election, 121 million of whom voted. Of those, 26 and change, call it 27 million, voters listed “moral values” (not that they know what that means. a side effect of defining moral as “Ok with me”) as their top priority. So 22% of all voters, and 8% of the American population is in the majority now? That was some powerful stupid, dude.

On topic just slightly, we have a much better proposed appointment. Michael Mukasey, George Bush’s nominee for attorney general, testifies about torture:

Calling the memo “a mistake” and “unnecessary,” Mukasey said that torture violates U.S. laws and pointed to the role of American troops in liberating Nazi concentration camps following World War II. “We didn’t do that so we could then duplicate it ourselves,” he said.

Oh if only the other “conservatives” could grasp such a simple concept that torturing people is just plain morally wrong. I’d even go so far as to say that torturing prisoners is (or should be) one of the few things we all agree is “Un-American” and un-patriotic. But no, apparently it’s now up for debate.
