Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Come on, man.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Books are my comfort food!

The Democrats Are Worse- Late Night Captain Ed Edition

by John Cole|  October 31, 200712:00 am| 35 Comments

This post is in: Politics, Republican Stupidity, General Stupidity

Thought I would check memorandum one last time before going to bed, and I found this gem. Captain Ed, in a long post about the investigation into the alleged corruption of Ted Stevens, comes to the conclusion that the Feds probably will be able to make a case against the Alaskan Senator, and then closes his post with this thing of beauty:

Regardless of whether the FBI can prove corruption, these cases demonstrate clearly that pork corrodes the process of government. When our elected representatives place themselves in positions to have themselves or their families directly benefit from their legislative activities, it becomes a gross conflict of interest. That’s true whether the Senator is Ted Stevens or Harry Reid. The porkers put their own pecuniary interests ahead of the fiscal responsibilities of the nation, and the only productivity we get is in the industry of rationalization.

In case you are wondering, the number of times Harry Reid’s name appeared in the article Ed used as his source is approximately ZERO. The sad thing is he probably doesn’t even realize he is being hacktacular.

Earlier today, the birth of a minor quip in the “Cruise South America with Hugh Hewitt” thread:

Ahmmm, I’m a ghey, and I wouldn’t do anything with the words “Cruise” and “Hugh Hewitt” in it.

Of course, with all those social conservatives in one place, it’ll probably sound like Riverdance in the bathrooms.

We now have visual evidence from one of our reporters in the field:

Lord of the Stance

Consider this an ‘open’ thread.

I sure hope Dukakis finally fights back.

*** Update ***

Dennis Kucinich just went nuts over nuclear power, saying it is unsustainable and not an option. I am reasonably sure I know his position on fossil fuels.

That means, if Dennis Kucinich becomes President, your options to stay warm in the winter boil down to slitting open a tonton or solar power on the three days each winter the sun is out.

*** Update #2 ***

Obama is not ready to be President. The only real choice this year (since the Republicans are all absurd) is between Dodd/Edwards/Clinton.

I am with Dodd, for now.

Col. Boylan certainly makes a lot of news:

A U.S. Army officer was attacked at knifepoint by three Korean males Sunday night outside Yongsan Garrison in Seoul and sustained a minor stab wound.

U.S. military authorities declined to release the officer’s name, but Stars and Stripes has learned he is Army Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, chief spokesman for 8th U.S. Army.

Boylan was treated for a stab wound and bruises at the 121 General Hospital on Yongsan, then released.

“The three suspects were cursing him in English,” said Army Maj. Holly Pierce, an 8th Army spokeswoman.

The suspects ran off after the attack, which began around 8:40 p.m. in a pedestrian underpass just outside Gate 3, along the east perimeter of the Yongsan installation, near a stretch of Highway 31, Pierce said.

Korean National Police and U.S. Army military police were investigating the attack, Pierce said.

The attack came only one day after a massive anti-American demonstration in Seoul in which tens of thousands denounced the acquittal last month of two U.S. soldiers in a roadside accident in which two teenage South Korean girls were struck and killed by a 45-ton U.S. Army armored vehicle June 13.

Boylan has been the Army’s principal spokesman on the case, going before South Korean and other news media regularly to represent the U.S. military’s side of the controversy.

Interesting is what I find that.

*** Update ***

I apologize in advance to all the wingnuts for not posting the entire news story. Since I do not want to be accused of HIDING THE GREATER TRUTHS, SELECTIVE EDITING AND MISLEADING MY REMAINING RIGHT-WING READERSHIP, I will remind you stupid bastards that the entire story can be found by clicking the hyperlink featured above, before the quote, and once again right here:

*** Update ***

More here (wingnuts click ‘here’ for the whole story, what follows is my ‘selective editing,’ or, as we in the business call it, editing):

Lt. Col. Steven Boylan’s combat patch comes from flying helicopters in El Salvador, but his parents think his Purple Heart should come from walking the streets of Seoul.

That became clear one night last month when three Korean men cornered him in a tunnel on his way home. ”They started cussing me in English, ‘G.I. get out, G.I. go home,’ ” the colonel, a 41-year-old Wisconsin native, recalled today. ”They attacked me, and I made a defensive maneuver. It was only when I made it back to post that I saw I had been stabbed.”

As Bob Owens told us yesterday, “The knives are being swung at the back of our soldiers comes from the hand of Franklin Foer.”

Does anyone know if Franklin Foer was in Korea in the past few years? Someone email the Weekly Standard. We might be on to something.

Code Pink pulls a fast one:

With all of the news about Blackwater USA’s problems, it wasn’t a surprise that a fake story about the company creating a “Department of Corporate Integrity” would make it on to several valid news sites.

CBS News and Politico.com were among the victims of the fraud, reportedly perpetuated by Code Pink, according to Politico, which posted a correction today. CBS reprinted a Politico story on its site.

“In this business, you sometimes come across news items and think, ‘You couldn’t make that stuff up.’ Well, sometimes you can,” Politico reported in its note. “Code Pink today pulled off a hoax that pulled in Politico and a number of other news outlets when it ginned up a fake release, saying that Blackwater USA was creating a new ‘Department of Corporate Integrity’ that would put the ‘mercy back in mercenary.’ That should have been a tip off.”

More of this, please.

Accountability-Schmountability

by John Cole|  October 30, 20074:12 pm| 14 Comments

This post is in: War

And there is nothing you can do about it:

ABC News has learned the exact wording of the immunity deal the State Department granted Blackwater security guards involved in a September shooting incident that left 17 Iraqis dead.

The security guards were given a limited immunity called “use immunity” in exchange for giving sworn statements about their involvement in the Sept. 16 shooting incident.

The wording of the immunity is included at the beginning of the Blackwater guards’ sworn statements, which have been obtained by ABC News.

In each of the statements, the guards begin by saying “I understand this statement is being given in furtherance of an official administrative inquiry,” and that, “I further understand that neither my statements nor any information or evidence gained by reason of my statements can be used against me in a criminal proceeding, except that if I knowingly and willfully provide false statements or information, I may be criminally prosecuted for that action under 18 United States Code, Section 1001.”

The immunity deal was granted in the immediate aftermath of the shooting by State Department officials in Iraq who were under intense pressure to quickly explain what happened in the face of allegations by Iraqi officials that the contractors murdered civilians in cold blood.

News of the immunity deal caught State Department officials in Washington off guard.

“If anyone gave such immunity it was done so without consulting senior leadership at State,” a senior State Department official initially told ABC News.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack would not comment directly on the immunity given to the security guards, but said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is determined to hold anybody guilty of wrongdoing accountable.

This must be one of those positive trends folks on the right are always crowing about.

I was doing my daily chores (reading Red State, Malkin, Hugh, etc.), when I came across something equal parts terrifying and intriguing:

From Old World sophistication to New World energy, South America is a balance of opposites. Life pulsates with remarkable diversity in South America – not only in its music, but in its widely contrasting landscapes, cultures and cuisines.

It is a land of stunning extremes – the world’s highest waterfall, longest mountain range, driest desert and largest rain forest. Stretching from the steaming Amazon basin to the bone-dry Atacama desert to the glacial peaks of the Andes, South America contains enough beauty and soul-searing diversity to quicken the pulse of the most experienced traveler.

Apparently, other cruises of comparable lengths cost only $3000. The other $3095 for this cruise must be the cost of stupid. Apparently Hugh is unaware we can get that for free when we read his website.
