Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

He really is that stupid.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

…and a burning sense of injustice to juice the soul.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Wow! Some people with Backbone! This is the bill they overrode the veto on.

In other news, Darth Cheney’s impeachment has been blocked. Kucinich turns down hunting invitation.

Great, they override the most useless of the vetoed bills. Go Congress!

    “This bill lacks fiscal discipline,”

If that ain’t the most ironic thing of this president’s veto policy. Amazing how the 2006 election made him start paying attention to anything fiscal.

Maybe the Congress will come to like the taste of an override and man (or woman as the case may be) up!

    Ummm,

I know there are more important bills and all but your very own state of georgia is running low on potable water Michael, in case you didn’t know, and we are facing a very very big issue water wise, across much of the nation and it’s going to get worse over the next 5 years.

Ok, so congress ain’t very brave.

But this is a substantial blow to Bush.

People need to use less water.

Here’s a tip for your lawn folks… Leave your grass an inch higher than you normally do. It’ll require less water that way.

Better yet, don’t water it. Let it go dormant on it’s own. Then you don’t have to mow!

About that Kucinich bill: My understanding is that it’s not dead, but rather that the vote sent it John Conyers’ Judiciary Committee. Pelosi and Hoyer, representing gutless weaseldom as usual, **tried** to have it killed, but their maneuver failed. Interestingly, many House Republicans, evidently eager for an open debate, voted **for** the bill in an earlier vote. Gotta give ’em credit — at least they’re willing to fight for their cause. I wonder what it’d be like if the Dems ever tried that?

That said, I hope somebody else looks into this, because the procedural mechanics are confusing, and right now Thomas.gov doesn’t have a vote tally yet.

    TOS,

Not going to disagree about water usage but a lot of the reason we’re running out has to do with drought, not just usage.

    “This bill lacks fiscal discipline,”

That’s like Slash turning down a smoke because, you know, nicotine is a drug man!

Seriously… how can Chimpy say this shit with a straight face? Fiscal discipline? I guess Halliburton needed that $23 billion even more, to buy some more semi trucks to carry ‘sailboat fuel’ ,to replace the ones they leave stranded on the road when they get a flat tire.

as usual, Bill Maher said it best last Friday. (paraphrased) “I’m willing to compromise – can’t the Democrats grow just one ball?”

this just is just some kabuki, so that the gop congress can distance themselves from bush, on an insubstantial (national politicswise) matter.

    not a trend.

Of course they overturned the veto on this bill. This veto hit them right where it hurts — in the pork.

But this is a substantial blow to Bush.

    What is it, a kilo?

Seriously, hold you applause until you see the signing statement. I’m sure “water projects control” falls under Article II, and besides, building dams just gives terrists shit to blow up.

Many of them are–just not enough of them. Let’s start calling the wusses out by name rather than giving them cover by slamming Dems in general.

Many of them are—just not enough of them. Let’s start calling the wusses out by name rather than giving them cover by slamming Dems in general.

Just last week I spoke to one of the better ones, Van Hollen (MD-08), at a “town hall” meeting. He isn’t useless, like Wynn in the adjacent district (MD-04), nor is he an unprincipled weasel like Hoyer, from another nearby district. After only two terms, Van Hollen is already in leadership positions.

I came away from it more demoralized than ever. Van Hollen’s argument (i.e., dodge) for not bringing impeachment proceedings? “Think of the precedent we’d set if we tried and failed.” Specific actions to head off the catastrophe of a war with Iran? NONE.

As I say, he’s one of the better ones. Face it, we have an “opposition” party that can’t oppose, won’t oppose, can’t even grasp the *concept* of opposition. The notion that we should discreetly avoid criticizing “our” party stalwarts because somewhere some Platonic ideal Dem is rumored to exist, and he’ll come out if we just keep mum, is laughable.

Pelosi and Reid and HRC are the perfect representatives of their party.

If I recall, this bill manages to both restore wildlife in some area’s while making it a ton worse in others (ie supply water to farmers that are growing food in regions not designed for said food, thus draining water from rivers where its needed and of course dumping even more nitrates into streams.)

Great job overriding a veto on a poorly designed bill, one thats just meant to make “people” happy and not do anything real.

Great job overriding a veto on a poorly designed bill, one thats just meant to make “people” happy and not do anything real.

WRDA is a package bill that authorizes (but does not appropriate) funding for almost 1,000 projects, including massive efforts like the Everglades restoration and environmental restoration and hurricane mitigation in Louisiana. Many of these projects have been in a holding pattern since the last WRDA bill in 2000. Is every one of the authorized projects a winner? No. But many of them are important and will most assuredly do something “real.”
