Tancredo takes campaign ads to a new low:

Jihadists!
Open Borders!
Someone has to say it!

The sound you are hearing is the Malkin wing of the Republican party having a collective orgasm.

soooo… if illegals ARE GOING TO KILL YOU in the shopping mall… why haven’t they already?

I’m sure most – if not all – of us remember the Cold War… now THERE was a real threat. They had armies and bombs and planes and tanks and ships and even thousands of frickin’ sharks with frickin’ laser beams nuclear-tipped missiles aimed right at us.

Every time some xenophobic jackass goes off like Tancredo does here, they just confirm Michael Moore’s thesis: this country is ruled by fear. Our leaders don’t know what to do without using fear to get their way.

Perhaps Cole needs to describe to us not seeped in “liberalism” what exactly she finds wrong with the ad. I’m going to assume it’s just the 24-style scenario and the sound of the explosion and not the underlying facts.

Because, tens of thousands of people from “SpecialInterest” countries have snuck into the U.S., a couple smugglings rings for MiddleEasterners have been broken up (including one that – shock! – bribed a Mexican official), and two Hezb. members were arrested after having snuck into the U.S. a year earlier. And, both Dem and GOP Congresspersons have warned about TerroristInfiltration, such as by MiddleEasterners posing as Mexicans. And, there’s a significant % of Latin Americans that are Muslims and there are even terrorist areas in Latin America.

For more, how about reading the 911Commission StaffReport (not the main report), or this PDF. Or, see my category just about this issue.

TLB- Because it is little more than absurd fearmongering. If it is such a god damned threat, you would think it would have happened just once, don’t ya. That isn’t asking too much, what with 12 million illegals and loads of jihadists STREAMING across the border, is it? I mean, if this were such an existential threat that Tancredo feels the need to make this ad, you would think it would have happened ONCE, wouldn’t you?

But it hasn’t now, has it?

Now shouldn’t you be moving to Montana to go off the grid with your generator and shotgun before the streaming Jihadists come get ya?

Obviously, the chance exists of loose nukes being used by terrorists. Just as obviously, it’s beyond irresponsible to use the excuse that they haven’t used them to say we shouldn’t be concerned about it happening. The whole idea is to prevent it happening in the first place. And, with, once again, tens of thousands of people from countries like Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc. having streamed over the borders the chance of enough terrorists being here is rather great.

And, once again, it’s not just Tancredo warning about this: it includes TX Congressmen, both Ds and Rs.

As for rh’s comment, I responded to that at The Garance. I also noted above that two Hezb. members were only caught after having been in the U.S. for a year. They’d snuck over the border.

Read the PDF linked above and do your research. So far this just looks like partisan knee-jerk reaction from those who aren’t at all familiar with everyone involved in this issue.

Just imagine what could have happened if the guy had managed to get enough explosives so that his backpack was actually full instead of deflated like that, and if he’d exploded it in the middle of a crowd rather than at some empty bench off to the side.

In any case, obviously we need to institute body searches and x-ray machines at the entrances to all shopping malls, and extend the “no fly” list into a “no shop” list. It’s the only way to be safe.

I’m so glad someone is taking this stuff seriously (six years after 9/11) because, you know, Republicans have remained silent on terrorism for so long. Besides, remember their warnings when the rest of the country was distracted with the Lewinsky affair?

The best line is that illegal immigrants are here to take our jobs. Uh huh, because the world owes trailer-dwelling anti-intellectuals their $6.00/hr jobs.

If you’re not losing bowel control, trembling under your bed, the terrorists and immigrants have already won.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself (and immigrants, and terrorists, and commie liberals, and gay marriage, and human-animal hybrids, and suitcase nukes and….)

Let me try a different perspective for you guys. I’m a pilot. I do a pre-flight inspection of the airplane every time I fly. Every time. I have not yet had an incident like a forced landing or other serious problem. Does this mean my time doing inspections is wasted? Does this mean that I’m “fear mongering” by taking all aspects of flying VERY seriously?

There’s a big hole in Manhattan where the World Trade Center used to be, which tends to work against the idea that we have nothing to fear from terrorists. I can’t speak for Tancredo, but I don’t want anyone to be fearful about the terrorist potential, just serious.

I think it works to suppor the idea that the government ought to have taken the known threat more seriously.

But alas, we had a president who, upon hearing the briefing, said “I guess you covered your asses.”

    So there’s that.

But the Tancredo idea is based on iconic fear. Not fear of tarrists, but fear of dark or hoodie-wearing people who carry backpacks, or something. That’s not taking a threat seriously, that’s pimping a threat, also known as demagogouery. In other words, it’s Republican.

Effin’ christ. I’ll be in these malls. Now I’ve got to ready to Bauer at any moment. I’ll have to carry a Glock and a Bible at all times. I’m guessing it’ll be the Santa or one of his elves.

Does this mean my time doing inspections is wasted? Does this mean that I’m “fear mongering” by taking all aspects of flying VERY seriously?

Foremost, see TZ’s post. We have a Republican president who’s response to the intel briefing that predicted 9/11 was “I guess you covered your asses.”

WRT flying, you are doing your job well. I appreciate people like you. I also appreciate the people who check their tire pressure before getting on the interstate.

If we had elected a leader in 2000 who took national security seriously enough to not politicize it, we might not be having this discussion, wouldn’t that be nice?

Should we be vigilant? Yes, you should be vigilant when you cross the street, drive, hold a baby, hold a gun, fly a plane, or have drinks at the bar. It’s about perspective.

The problem with Republicans (and authoritarians in general) is that every problem becomes the worst problem in the world, so we lose focus on the things that we can actually do something about.

That’s the difference between vigilance and fearmongering.

Here’s why the whole terrorist threat from the borders position doesn’t make sense. If they were really that concerned with enforcing the borders, they would seperate economic migration from criminal/terrorsit activity. Creating a legal route for the millions of migrant workers coming over here makes enforcement at the boarder and detection of criminals, etc more likely. Right now it’s needles and haystacks, which makes missing the terrorists at the border all the more likely.

Now I’ve got to ready to Bauer at any moment.

Great idea! Eddie Bauer carries a fine selection of clothing so it’s an ideal stop for the holiday shopper.

I have to wonder how retailers in LA and Chi must feel about this. It’s less than two weeks until “Black Friday,” the economy is already bad, more people shop on-line and then Code Brown for malls in two major cities.

I figured the terrorists would just want the loose women.

It’s a two-fer. Blow yourself off this planet and straight into the arms of a few dozen houris. Thank goodness that is a limited religion offer that most people decline or Mr. Tancredo would make sense … well, he probably would’ve launched himself a long time ago, but any way…

    John, You said:

TLB- Because it is little more than absurd fearmongering. If it is such a god damned threat, you would think it would have happened just once, don’t ya. That isn’t asking too much, what with 12 million illegals and loads of jihadists STREAMING across the border, is it? I mean, if this were such an existential threat that Tancredo feels the need to make this ad, you would think it would have happened ONCE, wouldn’t you?

But it hasn’t now, has it?
    ——————————————-

How about an average of 12 murders per day of Americans at the hands of illegals. Is that enough?

    http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53103

Will it actually take bombings in our areas of work, our schools, our shopping areas for you to want to control our borders? Really, it will take more than 4,300 murders per year to get your attention?

    Amazing!

Tancredo is obviously a 24 aficianado; why hasn’t he taken a cue from Season 2? It contains the obvious solution to our illegal immigration problem:

    1) we line the border with animal traps to snare potential terrorists, then
    2) release hungry cougars to menace said terrorists.

Why in God’s name isn’t this part of Tancredo’s platform? I’m starting to think he may be soft on illegal immigrant terrorists who want to kill us with backpack nukes.

*sigh*…..can we please take all the bedwetters scared of them Mexicans and them dirty furriners and stuff them somewhere in a booby hatch somewhere? Somewhere with nice padded walls? Godforbid, they might trip and skin their knees on that Dirty Scary Pavement.

I bet if I were to go back into newspapers, I could find terrified articles about The Evil of X in any decade. Historically, the US has had The Indian Peril, The Yellow Peril, The Anarchist Peril, the Communist Peril, and now The Islamofascist Peril. We’ve somehow managed to survive….
