Working on several things to practice with photoshop, and I had a quick question- how do I take a screenshot on an Apple? On the PC, there is Print Screen. Can not seem to find it on the Apple.

Cmd-shift-3, as I was able to google it in about eight seconds.

That includes typing the search string, and having a sip of coffee.

On my antiquated HP Pavilion Windows XP machine.

Which cost me $400 about 3 years ago.

With a cool mac, I could have done it in seven seconds.

There’s also a cool little program called Grab, which is in your Utilities folder (within Applications). That allows you to take a timed screen shot, or grab just a window, or select a portion of your screen, etc.

how do I take a screenshot on an Apple?

Now that the question has actually been answered, surely there’s some potential for Mac user jokes here. Let’s see…

Do you have a digital camera?

No, wait, what you *really* want to do is get a 35mm camera and a tripod, take a few good pictures, and then scan them in at a high resolution…

Oh, actually, do you have a negative scanner…

If you haven’t already figured it out, Command + SHIFT + 4 lets you marquee what you want.

    November 13, 2007 at 10:23 am

Command-Shift-4 lets you take a subset of the screen – it gives you a cross-hair which you use to make a box around the target.

    Alex

    November 13, 2007 at 10:24 am

AND if you use Command + SHIFT + 4 and then hit Space, you can take a screen grab of whatever window you want, it shades them as you pass the mouse over. You don’t have to hold those keys down, btw, just hit them, and then use the mouse to select.

There’s also a Grab submenu in the Services menu, which lives in the menu with the current application’s name.

The Grab services are never enabled, however, so I don’t know how it’s supposed to work. On NeXTSTEP, they worked.

Effective immediately, STI International has halted all shipments of firearms to California. The company will no longer sell any firearms to civilians or law enforcement in the state

That’s starting to change, apparently; I’ve seen reports of some trojans targeting OS X in the wild. So far they’re all low-risk threats, relying on social engineering rather than technical weaknesses in the OS, but as Macs get more popular, more malware will be targeted towards them.

The Unix/Linux/BSD-based operating systems do have some vulnerabilities, although they’re nothing like the bad old days of Win95. Caveat luser.

    Since there’s some Mac talk…

Open Source Mac is a good directory of just what it says. Cyberduck is a great FTP client, for those who need one, one of the most thoroughly Mac-like apps I know of and a pleasure to work with. The answer to just about any “what do I watch this video with” question is VLC. There are other jewels on that list, too.

Scrivener is my new love when it comes to word processing. It’s a thoroughly fresh approach to writing, with really smooth integration of annotations and notes, and neat features for writing in chunks and then combining different ways. Love it muchly, recommend it highly.

You Control: Tunes is a neat little app for controlling iTunes from the menu bar, for times when one doesn’t want to switch away from the app one is currently using. Handy stuff.

Hey John, I kind of forgot you went Mac.

If you want a quick way to get up to speed in Photoshop, I highly recommend Lynda.com. It’s a subscription ($25 per month or so) site which has quicktime movie tutorials.

The different software is broken up into small, easily digestible chunks. It’s great even for people who really know the software, because it covers all the myriad little tricks that it can take months and months to learn just by experimentation.

Photoshop used to be my favorite, but InDesign is the most amazing page-layout program I’ve ever used, and I think I’ve used them all. Do you have Creative Suite 3 yet?

    Who said apple wasn’t intuitive?

Apple’s far from perfect. A few days ago: I want to make an appointment at the local Apple store, and there’s a drop-down list of state names for store locations. I click on the menu and scan down the states: Nevada, New York, . . . Ohio? Where’s North Carolina? And then I realize, “Oh, they’ve spelled out the state names, but they’re alphabetized by their abbreviation.” North Carolina (NC) comes before Nebraska (NE), Nevada (NV) is between New Mexico (NM) and New York (NY), and so forth.

I’m exaggerating my surprise, above; I teach this sort of usability stuff professionally, and I’ve seen this particular problem in lots of places. There are all sorts of little shortcuts that interface programmers can take that end up making things less intuitive for users.

Using a flawed method that is useless if the gun is stolen, a revolver or someone files or replaces the firing pin.

Ah, gun schmuck Logic 101 – the law is not 1000 percent foolproof, even though it will work if the handgun is not stolen, automatic and the shooter has not taken the time to mess with the pin. We certainly would not want that, and since we don’t have the tech yet to make the system work in all instances, we should have no law.

That’s why so many of us who do own guns and like to shoot find the gun nuts to be such a band of asinine ideologue windbags.

the law is not 1000 percent foolproof

This law is not even 10% foolproof. How about a law that requires in-car breathalyzers.

Hey if it helps law enforcement then you should support it.
    Kahleefornia “Justice”

God forbid we have some semblance of transparency in law enforcement. That just won’t do!

The first recommendation would have required that prosecutors who use jailhouse “snitches” corroborate snitch testimony with other evidence. […]

The second reform would have required police to videotape interrogations in violent crime investigations. […]

The commission’s third recommendation … would have established a task force to look into eyewitness testimony, and set up a series of voluntary guidelines for the state’s police departments to follow to ensure that police lineups aren’t overly suggestive.

Every one of these sensible recommendations was vetoed by Schwarzenegger. Unbelievable.

If you’re look for a good Photoshop book try the Classroom in a book series from Adobe. It comes w/ a CD and is project based, so you learn by creating a project. They give you all of the necessary pieces of art/copy/whatever and then you follow the steps. The lurnin’ just seeps in. Smart move. Sort of like if when CA started passing stricter car emission standards, an auto maker in protest would have stopped selling cars there. While their trade group lobbied against the legislation because the stricter standards wouldn’t eliminate all emissions. Sort of like the NRA’s position on this legislation. Smart, strong.

If you want to grab movies, including DVD’s or just mouse action tutorials, or even audio (I record a 1×1 pixel movie and on save, deselect the video portion) look at Snapz Pro. That’s what I use. It’s Grab.app on steroids.

Yeah, command-shift 3 doesn’t have an icon but it’s done the same job for 23 years, so people just know it. 1 and 2 used to eject the internal/external floppy disks (and pre-hard drive, that was something everyone learned how to do pretty quick).

FWIW the print screen button on windows has never actually done anything when I press it. Even should I WANT a printout of the screen rather than an image file, which is pretty unlikely. And I JUST tested it on our XP PC and it… didn’t do anything. I always thought it was there just to make the ten-key pad look pretty.
