Command + SHIFT + 3
rob
Duh, Who said apple wasn’t intuitive?
ThymeZone
Cmd-shift-3, as I was able to google it in about eight seconds.
That includes typing the search string, and having a sip of coffee.
On my antiquated HP Pavilion Windows XP machine.
Which cost me $400 about 3 years ago.
With a cool mac, I could have done it in seven seconds.
Salmon of Trout
Ahh, but that doesn’t provide an open thread, now does it TZ?
John Cole
Nor does it provide the opportunity for nerdfury to strike, and have fifteen people provide me with better ways to printscreen and the like.
I am not an idiot, TZ.
Pete Guither
There’s also a cool little program called Grab, which is in your Utilities folder (within Applications). That allows you to take a timed screen shot, or grab just a window, or select a portion of your screen, etc.
Ned Raggett
Grab is my friend. Use it all the time.

Now that the question has actually been answered, surely there’s some potential for Mac user jokes here. Let’s see…
Do you have a digital camera?
No, wait, what you *really* want to do is get a 35mm camera and a tripod, take a few good pictures, and then scan them in at a high resolution…
Oh, actually, do you have a negative scanner…

Woo Hoo! Open Thread!!! Here’s an article that a friend sent me on the importance of politcal consensus. It’s from the finacial times and I’ve never read that paper before (or any books with out color pop up pictures), anybody here know anything about the politics of this newspaper or Clive Crook?

If you haven’t already figured it out, Command + SHIFT + 4 lets you marquee what you want.
eglennb
Command-Shift-4 lets you take a subset of the screen – it gives you a cross-hair which you use to make a box around the target.
Alex
AND if you use Command + SHIFT + 4 and then hit Space, you can take a screen grab of whatever window you want, it shades them as you pass the mouse over. You don’t have to hold those keys down, btw, just hit them, and then use the mouse to select.
Michael D.
But whatever you do, DON’T push Command-Shift-5!!! It’s never been done!
Zifnab
Also, Apple sucks.
ThymeZone
Now you tell me.
Just kidding. I just don’t want to see you turn into one of those snobby Mac types who think they are cooler than the rest of us.
heywood jablomy
Apple does not suck. It keeps the malware away.
COMMAND-SHIFT-13 evicts George Bush from office.
Mr Furious
Awesome! A fifteen-year Mac vet here, and I never knew about those additional tricks…I always take the full screen shot and crop in Photoshop…
Don’t be shy about asking questions John, we “Macs” are happy to help the “PCs” I you need to know a Photoshop, I’m your man.

There’s also a Grab submenu in the Services menu, which lives in the menu with the current application’s name.
The Grab services are never enabled, however, so I don’t know how it’s supposed to work. On NeXTSTEP, they worked.

I am guessing California will soon sue this company for discrimination.
Stopping Sales
How dare they stop selling their products in California because they do not like the laws passed there.

That’s starting to change, apparently; I’ve seen reports of some trojans targeting OS X in the wild. So far they’re all low-risk threats, relying on social engineering rather than technical weaknesses in the OS, but as Macs get more popular, more malware will be targeted towards them.
The Unix/Linux/BSD-based operating systems do have some vulnerabilities, although they’re nothing like the bad old days of Win95. Caveat luser.
ThymeZone
I think this is the lamest troll I have ever seen on the tubes.
Really. You’re about a notch away from pulling your pants down and mooning the blog.
Sarcastro
Intuitive schmintuitive, real men use the CLI (which will work with programs – like games or DVD players – that lock out the keyboard shortcuts):
$ sudo screencapture -ttiff -x ~/Desktop/screenshot.tiff

“That’s starting to change, apparently; I’ve seen reports of some trojans targeting OS X in the wild.”
Eh. So far it’s one trojan that was being distributed as a ‘codec’ on porn sites, and required several steps of user interaction in order for it to install.

Since there’s some Mac talk…
Open Source Mac is a good directory of just what it says. Cyberduck is a great FTP client, for those who need one, one of the most thoroughly Mac-like apps I know of and a pleasure to work with. The answer to just about any “what do I watch this video with” question is VLC. There are other jewels on that list, too.
Scrivener is my new love when it comes to word processing. It’s a thoroughly fresh approach to writing, with really smooth integration of annotations and notes, and neat features for writing in chunks and then combining different ways. Love it muchly, recommend it highly.
You Control: Tunes is a neat little app for controlling iTunes from the menu bar, for times when one doesn’t want to switch away from the app one is currently using. Handy stuff.
mrmobi
Hey John, I kind of forgot you went Mac.
If you want a quick way to get up to speed in Photoshop, I highly recommend Lynda.com. It’s a subscription ($25 per month or so) site which has quicktime movie tutorials.
The different software is broken up into small, easily digestible chunks. It’s great even for people who really know the software, because it covers all the myriad little tricks that it can take months and months to learn just by experimentation.
Photoshop used to be my favorite, but InDesign is the most amazing page-layout program I’ve ever used, and I think I’ve used them all. Do you have Creative Suite 3 yet?
jcricket
Actually, all you have to do is open “Spotlight” and type “evict George Bush from Office”. Mac will provide handy instructions, and even execute them for you with a single mouse click.
It’s that intuitive.

How dare the Republican governor of California sign into law a bill to help “police to match bullet casings found at a crime scene to the handgun that fired the bullets”–dastardly!
Steve
Furthermore, Command-Shift-6 will launch the Omega-13 device.

[sigh] I so love my MacBook. It makes such a WONDERFUL doorstop.

Wow, a press release from the lairs at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
I am sure you will give the same unbiased respect to press release from the NRA.
Using a flawed method that is useless if the gun is stolen, a revolver or someone files or replaces the firing pin.
Bombadil
I think we can now start singing a chorus of “Moon River” for Paul L.
Dreggas
You know I could make a comment about “Free markets” but I won’t…oh wait I just did.

I’m still just awestruck at the anger a mere mention of an Apple product invokes. Must be doing something right to piss off so many knuckledraggers.
binzinerator
He’s tugging his pants down now, TZ. Looks like this thread isn’t going to escape without a moon from him.

Apple’s far from perfect. A few days ago: I want to make an appointment at the local Apple store, and there’s a drop-down list of state names for store locations. I click on the menu and scan down the states: Nevada, New York, . . . Ohio? Where’s North Carolina? And then I realize, “Oh, they’ve spelled out the state names, but they’re alphabetized by their abbreviation.” North Carolina (NC) comes before Nebraska (NE), Nevada (NV) is between New Mexico (NM) and New York (NY), and so forth.
I’m exaggerating my surprise, above; I teach this sort of usability stuff professionally, and I’ve seen this particular problem in lots of places. There are all sorts of little shortcuts that interface programmers can take that end up making things less intuitive for users.
heywood jablomy
Ah, gun schmuck Logic 101 – the law is not 1000 percent foolproof, even though it will work if the handgun is not stolen, automatic and the shooter has not taken the time to mess with the pin. We certainly would not want that, and since we don’t have the tech yet to make the system work in all instances, we should have no law.
That’s why so many of us who do own guns and like to shoot find the gun nuts to be such a band of asinine ideologue windbags.
Paul L.
This law is not even 10% foolproof. How about a law that requires in-car breathalyzers.
Hey if it helps law enforcement then you should support it.

Egads …. avert your eyes!

“Mooooooon Riverrrrrr! Wider than a mile………”

Yeah Paul L., that’d suck if the police could only track down, like, half of the firearms / people involved. Wasn’t there a time when Republicans were allegedly supposed to be pro-law enforcement, and not openly pro-arms dealer? When did that change, anyhow? Iran Contra? World War II? World War I?!
Susan Kitchens
Cool! That command-shift-4 and spacebar to select window is something I didn’t know before. Glad I read this “how do I?” thread.
Bombadil
Has Tim F. picked a name for his beer yet?
jcricket
Can we sing it in that bad way they did in “Mars Attacks” with the hope that Paul L and the other spoofers’ heads will explode?
Llelldorin
Command-Control-Shift-3 and Command-Control-Shift-4 take the copies to the clipboard instead of to files. That’s often useful if you just want to screenshot-click-paste.
Punchy
I’m sure Apple makes you buy an “iShot” or “iSee” or some such add-on bullshit to do this….
Bombadil
This crowd? That’s probably the only way we could sing it.
Mr. Dave
If you’re look for a good Photoshop book try the Classroom in a book series from Adobe. It comes w/ a CD and is project based, so you learn by creating a project. They give you all of the necessary pieces of art/copy/whatever and then you follow the steps. The lurnin’ just seeps in. I’m a Photoshop vet from the days before it even had layers and I still find CIB useful when a new version comes out.
Tsulagi
I’m sure CA will suffer. LOL. About all STI sells is overpriced 1911s for the Cadillac Escalade set.
Smart move. Sort of like if when CA started passing stricter car emission standards, an auto maker in protest would have stopped selling cars there. While their trade group lobbied against the legislation because the stricter standards wouldn’t eliminate all emissions. Sort of like the NRA’s position on this legislation. Smart, strong.
Bombadil
And then the Japanese automakers came in with compliant cars and started eating the US makers’ lunch. Let them take themselves out of the competition, someone will find a large open market waiting for the picking.
heywood jablomy
Double true. I had to buy Apple iFuck to download porn.
binzinerator
You mean an iWack. The iFuck’s intended for live peer-to-peer connections.
Jake
Yeah, look at how Paul L. keeps eluding his keepers.
“I’m crossing you in style, some day…”
(And really, if you could hear me singing your skull would be shrapnel.)
jcricket
The problem is that this blog is less than 100% fool-proof. That’s why we keep getting Paul L and his ilk ruining our little playground :-)
Darkness
If you want to grab movies, including DVD’s or just mouse action tutorials, or even audio (I record a 1×1 pixel movie and on save, deselect the video portion) look at Snapz Pro. That’s what I use. It’s Grab.app on steroids.
Yeah, command-shift 3 doesn’t have an icon but it’s done the same job for 23 years, so people just know it. 1 and 2 used to eject the internal/external floppy disks (and pre-hard drive, that was something everyone learned how to do pretty quick).
FWIW the print screen button on windows has never actually done anything when I press it. Even should I WANT a printout of the screen rather than an image file, which is pretty unlikely. And I JUST tested it on our XP PC and it… didn’t do anything. I always thought it was there just to make the ten-key pad look pretty.
