Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Washington Post’s Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

In after Baud. Damn.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Be a traveling stable for those who can’t find room at the inn.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

And It Starts

WingNutDaily:

In a new book alleging a campaign of slander and intimidation orchestrated chiefly by Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Willey points a finger of suspicion at the former first couple for the death of her husband, who was believed to have killed himself.

Willey, who claims she was groped by President Clinton in the White House, acknowledged in an interview with WND today that she stands by the speculation she poses about her husband’s demise in “Target: Caught in the Crosshairs of Bill and Hillary Clinton,” set for release this week by World Ahead Publishing, WND Books’ partner.

Asked if she suspects her husband Ed, a lawyer and son of a prominent Virginia lawmaker, was murdered, Willey replied, “Most definitely.”

“I’m having someone with a forensics background look at this, and I intend to pursue this further, now that these questions have been raised,” she told WND, pointing to alleged discrepancies in the autopsy report.

Does she believe the Clintons were involved?

“I do have suspicions,” Willey said, “yes.”

It is official. The 2008 election is now underway.

I am off to a conference, have a good week!

Redux, Project Valor-IT: Open Thread

Ok, to hell with the partisanship. Time to stop sniping over who supports what. Of course, you have plenty of charities from which to choose, and I encourage you to support your favorite this year (whether it’s for the soldiers or not.) Just reading the comments to yesterday’s post, it’s looking like a tiny minority of us are getting as bad as some of Malkin’s. Let’s rise above it, let’s take the high road, let’s keep the politics out of it, and let’s kick some ass! It’s a fine charity no matter who supports it.

Yeah, I know many of you are from Blue States, and consistently get money stolen from you by Red States, I know you’re probably all hurtin’ for $$. (Hell, I gave most of my charity dollars to my local NPR affiliate this year, but I’ll give what I can!) ;-)

Yesterday, John signed us up for the Army team, so go donate! And while you’re at it, go vote for Balloon-Juice at the Weblog Awards – almost, but not quite as important. I mean hell. Gateway Pundit and My Pet Jawa are in 2nd & 3rd place. Come on! My Pet Jawa? Puleeezee.

Open Tax Thread

This post is in: Tax Policy

Just out of curiosity, I’d like to know where you all stand on taxes. Personally, I would like something like the FairTax. The reason for that is because it would take care of almost all of the fiscal issues faced by gay people. But there are plenty of other options out there. Flat tax, FairTax, leave it as it is, tax the rich more, tax the rich less, no taxes!

I know what the people at my other blog think, and it was a pretty good conversation (both in this thread and in many others.) I’d like to know what you think.

**Update: Also, uhmmm, VOTE!

Project Valor-IT

This post is in: Military, Assholes

I think Project Valor-IT is a good cause and, like a lot of other “support the troops” initiatives, both online and from a personal standpoint, I may consider contributing. But then I see posts like this from Malkin:

In addition to my donation yesterday, I will chip in another $25 for each left-wing blogger, up to 10 total, who signs up today.

Which, if you’ll forgive me for being a cycnic, may as well read, “We set up this charity so we could bash those troop-hatin’ libruls over the head with it,” and I become less interested in being a part of it.

Spectering Lessons From A Master

True to form, when the time comes to back words up with deeds Arlen Specter has never met a matter of principle on which he won’t cave. In fact I can’t imagine why anybody would take his “concern” over Mukasey at face value. Specter has folded on the torture issue several times already, so why should this time turn out any different? If you want principles, forget fake mavericks like Specter, Graham and Warner and instead look to the vanishingly small cadre of unrepentant pains in the ass like Chuck Hagel. The difference between play-acting and following through couldn’t be more obvious.

Going Gay in Kentucky

“Now do you want a governor who’d like Kentucky to be another San Francisco?”

TPM Muckraker has the audio of Pat Boone’s robo-call to Kentucky voters.

**Obligatory troll disclaimer: Yes, yes, I already know I am a self-loathing gay.
