Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

This blog will pay for itself.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Everybody saw this coming.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

I was promised a recession.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

I really should read my own blog.

Not all heroes wear capes.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Bark louder, little dog.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Let there be snark.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Just Like Dallas

From the department of ledes that inspire a double-take:

Other than the hellish heat, a crushing carbon dioxide atmosphere and corrosive clouds of sulfuric acid, Venus is a lot like Earth, scientists said yesterday.

In an astronomical sense they’re right. Water oceans, Earth-like weather and an atmosphere that could theoretically support life aren’t that common in the universe, at least as far as we know today. Venus has since heated up a notch and Mars has cooled down, but after dialing back time a few billion years that makes three different planets in our solar system that could have sheltered the evolution of life*, plus one moon if you count Europa. Space feels less lonely these days.

(*) …or I suppose where God could have blinked into existence cavemen who didn’t immediately freeze solid or catch fire.

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

The Weekly Standard:

So, a good night for for the lowest denominator, a bad night for the GOP. America got to see a vaguely threatening parade of gun fetishists, flat worlders, Mars Explorers, Confederate flag lovers and zombie-eyed-Bible-wavers as well as various one issue activists hammering their pet causes.

So they think the questions unfairly represented the current GOP? Fine. Which questions? Which questions were plucked from the fringe?

I am betting that I can find someone in the top 500 of the TTLB blogroll who identifies as a Republican who has asked/stated/argued EVERY question asked last night, whether it be Mars exploration (I think the hardest one to link to the GOP) to the Confederate Flag to gun rights to the immigration stances to the biblical literalism portrayed last night.

So which questions were from the “fringe?” Fill me in. I am all ears. Because that IS the current Republican party- the lowest common denominator.

PS- Doesn’t the fact that a retired gay General scared the living shit out of the blogosphere’s bravest and brightest conservative stalwarts make the case for gays in the military? I mean, if you can make the Keyboard Commandos cringe, imagine what you can do to less hardy souls like Iraqi insurgents?

*** Update #2 ***

Still waiting. And while you are at it, nutters, explain to me how a Republican President is going to work with the Democratic supermajority in the House and Senate when they can’t even handle a question from a John Edwards supporter without wilting?

Conservative stalwart Henry Hyde is dead:

Former Rep. Henry Hyde, the Illinois Republican who steered the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton and championed government restrictions on the funding of abortions, has died. He was 83.

The death of the Illinois Republican was announced Thursday morning on Capitol Hill by the office of House Minority Leader John Boehner.

There was no immediate word on the cause of his death.

RIP.

Looks Like They Found Their Liberal Media CNN-Spiracy

This post is in: Media, Republican Stupidity, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing, I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

ZOMG! CNN let people other than Republicans ask questions during the debate last night! And some of them have even declared support for DHIMMOCRATS! Take it away, Michelle:

Update: More plant excavation…Abortion questioner is a declared Edwards’ supporter… and the Log Cabin Republican questioner is a declared Obama supporter…and lead toy questioner is a union activist for the John Edwards-endorsing United Steelworkers.

Oh NOES!!!!!!!

Despite earlier stating that “the questions were almost all coherent and well-framed,” we now have a full fledged SCANDAL because not everyone who asked a question at the debate had taken the Virginia GOP Loyalty Oath!

Seriously- I can’t even parody these lunatics anymore. I’ll just leave you with this- it sure is fun watching the group that excoriated Hillary Clinton for planting friendly questioners in her appearances COMPLETELY freak out because CNN refused to make sure all the questioners in the debate last night were friendly to Republicans.

Although, if you think about it, I guess they have to bitch about the media. We all saw their candidates last night. I wouldn’t want to talk about them this morning, either. It makes complete sense that they have worked themselves into a lather about this latest “scandal.”

*** Update ***

And yes, this is the same Michelle Malkin who just the other day wrote the following (without a hint of self-awareness):

If it isn’t cartoons or Western fast-food joints or Valentine’s day cards or beauty pageants or books or speeches or Playboy magazines or soccer balls that have the Religion of Perpetual Outrage up in arms, it’s something else. It’s always something. You can never assuage the unassuageable. You can never anticipate what pretext they’ll use next to claim “insult” and demand submission. Today, it’s teddy bears. Yes, teddy bears.

From here on out, Michelle Malkin will be known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Outrage.” Think of her as a wingnut goddess.

Question

Has a legitimate presidential candidate ever been indicted out of the race before? How about an illegitimate candidate?

Honestly, this is getting ridiculous. Giuliani won’t fire a pedophile priest from his payroll no matter how it might look for his campaign. He pushed his incompetent, mobbed-up henchman for Homeland Security Secretary and, terrifyingly, almost got his wish. He blew 9/11 when he ignored advice and based his emergency command center in the WTC. Why? Apparently so that he could use the lavishly furnished site as an adulterous love nest. The guy has a messianic infallibility complex that would make the president blush.

I can sort of get the 9/11 aura that convinced the GOP to let Giuliani throw his hat in the ring, but at some point the party needs to think about an intervention. With Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff and Duke Cunningham and Mark Foley (and, soon, almost the entire Alaska Congressional delegation) so fresh in the nation’s memory is this guy really the best face that the GOP can put forward?

Maybe some Giulianiacs can stop by and explain the appeal to me. Believe me, I get the idea of electing the Tasmanian Devil and calling him “strong on security.” Well enough if that’s the foreign policy you want. Now look at the trade-off. The guy can’t govern, his cronies will steal anything that isn’t bolted down, he reads 1984 for leadership ideas and he thinks he’s God. I guess that we honestly have to destroy the country in order to save it.

***Update***

Oy gevalt.

***Update 2***

You know, given Trapper John’s thoughts and particularly the way that Fox News has done anything but bury the story, maybe leaking the Hamptons love tryst was the intervention.

Like a Cowboys/Browns Superbowl, I am rooting for injuries.

So far, Rudy and Mitt are doing their best to alienate the six remaining Hispanic voters who might consider voting for a Republican.

*** Update ***

Thompson with a dig on Giuliani regarding Kerik while kicking Romney in the junk. We approve.

*** Update ***

8:25 PM, and the theme is still “BOO SCARY IMMIGRANTS!”

*** Update ***

The more I listen to Mitt Romney, the more I viscerally dislike him. He is just a snake.

*** Update ***

I switched to ABC to watch the Grinch.

*** Update ***

I turned it back on around 9:49, and once again, Mitt Romney is left explaining why he no longer believes whatever it was he said to get elected in Massachussetts.

*** Update ***

And yet another Republican debate, and I don’t agree with much of what he is saying, but Mike Huckabee is absolutely wiping the damned floor with everyone. He is an actual person. You get the feeling he believes what he is saying, which shouldn’t be so extraordinary, but with this bunch of phonies and frauds, it seems to be a characteristic limited to Huckabee, Ron Paul, and, occasionally, Fred Thompson.

*** Update ***

Reason’s take on the WWJD death Penalty question:

9:15: The death penalty: “What would Jesus do?” Huckabee soars with a lot of friffery about how hard it was to make the decision. (“Shorter Huckabee: I’ll kill people but I’ll cry about it.“)
