Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

I desperately hope that, yet again, I am wrong.

No Justins, No Peace

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Israel is using food as a weapon of war. Unforgivable.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Follow-up: Morning in America II

A follow up to John’s post about the cop who tasered a motorist for not signing a speeding ticket. The investigation has now “sped up” as a result of the motorist posting the video on YouTube.

Authorities are expediting an investigation of a state trooper who zapped a motorist with a Taser after video of the incident was posted on YouTube, the Utah Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

“It definitely put a little bit of conflict out there. We definitely have received a lot of feedback on it, calls and e-mail,” said Trooper Cameron Roden, a spokesman for the highway patrol. […]

Utah Highway Patrol Spokesman Sergeant Jeff Nigbur told Smith that he could not comment on whether the trooper’s conduct in the video was standard operating procedure. “We have an internal review process happening right now,” he said. “We are going to look into whether the officer’s actions were appropriate or not.” […]

“I can’t speculate on what was happening in the trooper’s mind,” Roden said. “We have an internal investigation going on. … With it coming out on YouTube, we have expedited the investigation.” […]

Signing a speeding ticket is not an admission of guilt, Roden said. He described it as a promise that a motorist “will take care of the citation.”

Well, that answers the question about whether or not signing the ticket was an admission of guilt. As for what was going on in the officer’s mind? I don’t know. Maybe, “I’ll show this motherf***er that he ain’t gonna screw with a Poh-leeece officer” Just my opinion.

An editorial from the Salt Lake Tribune here.

Added: Call me a cynic, but when I heard that the investigation was being “expedited,” I read it as “Oh, now that people have seen the video, maybe we should actually start an investigation!”

If You Haven’t Done Anything Wrong

You Don’t Have Anything To Worry About, Cell Phone Edition:

Federal officials are routinely asking courts to order cellphone companies to furnish real-time tracking data so they can pinpoint the whereabouts of drug traffickers, fugitives and other criminal suspects, according to judges and industry lawyers.

In some cases, judges have granted the requests without requiring the government to demonstrate that there is probable cause to believe that a crime is taking place or that the inquiry will yield evidence of a crime. Privacy advocates fear such a practice may expose average Americans to a new level of government scrutiny of their daily lives.

Other than those privacy extremists, is anyone concerned about this/ Well, Captain Ed:

Federal agents routinely request tracking data from cellphone companies to determine the travel and assembly habits of suspects, and courts have granted them unusual leeway in obtaining the data. Are these terrorist suspects that could present a clear and imminent danger to the lives of Americans? No — just drug dealers and other usual suspects of American crime. Why, then, do the courts allow this tracking without the normal establishment of probable cause?

Ed, Ed, Ed. Get with the program. 9/11 changed everything. And once you give a private company your personal information, you can’t expect the government not to have access to it. Amirite? I am sure libertarian Glenn Reynolds can help you sort this all out.

In all seriousness, if this kind of thing pisses you off and frightens you, and it should, then you should be rooting for Hillary Clinton to win in 2008. Not because I trust her with the sorts of unchecked power the right wing has demanded authorities have during Bush’s tenure, but because I know the surest way to wake up NRO and the Red State and the other alleged “conservatives” to the dangers of this sorts of behavior is to give the power to Hillary.

Did you know pot smokers are remarkably well adjusted? I would tend to concur with the commenter here: “I think it’s because pot smoking teaches kids to slow down and take stock of what’s really important in life: sandwiches.”

Andrew Sullivan is doing a best/worst 80’s video thing. I’m voting for this one. Probably one of the best videos, for all the reasons he describes. But that’s likely because I come from a town of 2000 people.

The Culture of Life: Fill in the Blanks

by Michael D.|  November 22, 20072:13 pm| 43 Comments

This post is in: Politics, Republican Stupidity, The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs, War

Ben Domenech gives thanks for President Bush:

But as it stands, we have to acknowledge one truth about President Bush: taken as a whole, his presidency has marked more achievements for the culture of life than any that came before it.

Let’s see:

– Number of dead Americans military personnel: 3874 and counting
– Number of dead Iraqi civilians: Hundreds of thousands. No need to put down a number because it will likely change in the few minutes it take me to finish writing this post.

Those two are easy to find. Here are some numbers I would like to see:

  • Number of dead in the drug war since Bush took office: ???
  • Number of Africans who’ve died of AIDS because administration “abstinence only” funding policies have strict limits on who can receive funding: ???
  • Number of abortions by teenage mothers who weren’t taught the proper use of birth control because of “abstinence only” policies: ???
  • Number of people Governor Bush allowed to be executed in Texas: ???
  • Number of children who may get sick and die because the president thinks they’re too rich for health insurance: ???

Feel free to fill in the blanks, or to add your own numbers to the list.

Update: Oh, and don’t forget this one – Number of people who had no chance of ever having a life who Bush and his supporters tried to keep “alive” for no other reason than to make a political statement: 1 (that I know of. And I don’t think I need to provide a link.)
