Does it make me a bad Steelers fan to be openly rooting for the Ravens?

Whats not to love about the Pats?
guyermo
you don’t have to root for the ravens. you can just root for the patriots to make mistake after mistake.
4tehlulz
They’ve become The Raiders. I expect Bellichek to morph into Al Davis any second.
guyermo
my personal patriots shame…i have to cheer for maroney, but only because he’s an ex-gopher.
…and i had the starter jacket when they changed their logo

A gray hooded sweatshirt and a headband is a long way from a black running suit and a gold chain.

Whats not to love about the Pats?
Tom Brady campaigning for Bush in ’04, for starters.
Kathy
Didn’t you hear Kornheiser? Bellicheck has to be the bad guy because Brady is too cute. Plus he’s a Michigan guy so I can’t possibly hate him. However, I am an Eagle’s fan so yeah I have to hate Bellicheck.
Btw, the Ravens seem to be making this as much of a game as the Eagles did last week, plus Boller (unlike Feely) hasn’t thrown an interception yet.
jake
Have a LOLPAT.
I have no way to prove this, but I suspect the tackle who manages to step on Brady’s face will receive 42 virgins and the undying thanks of the rest of the league.
UberMitch
I don’t recall that, though I do remember Brady showing up at the SOTU. For what its worth, Peyton Manning gave money to Bush in 2004, and isnt Tony Dungy a known anti-gay bigot? I’m sure for whatever criticism of the Pats you can come up with, the Colts are worse.
Doug
I was just blogging about some thoughts I had about the 2008 Democratic primaries and stumbled into an NFL metaphor wherein Hillary Clinton was the Patriots and I hadn’t made up my mind which, of Edwards and Obama, was the Colts and which was the Steelers.
Jen
When will football be over, doesn’t anyone like hoops? Carolina, preferably?
Elvis Elvisberg
Touchdown, Patriots.
Y’know, I felt bad for you about WVU’s loss till this post, John. Now I’m back to being pissed that WVU allowed such a crappy Ohio State team, who hasn’t played anyone all year, to have a shot at a title.
Some LOLPATS site, there– two posts, consisting of the same gay joke twice, and an implication that the Sox are going to lose to the Angels.
Elvis Elvisberg
I think Hillary Clinton is the XFL of presidential candidates– a well-funded machine, with little in the way of grass roots enthusiasm.
demimondian
I agree with Elvis about Hillary being the XFL. More than that, I think I can safely tag Dennis Kucinich as the WLAF.
Notorious P.A.T.

Haha, that’s great )
Sure, the Colts are at least as bad as the Patriots.
The Commander Guy
Rooting against the Patriots is a perfectly acceptable behavior.
So no problemo.
Kit Smith
John, because no one wants to see the Pats go 16-0, it is acceptable for AFC North fans that don’t like Baltimore to root for the Ravens. I’m a Browns fan, and I’m pulling for them. In this instance, it is acceptable, though once the Pats lose any game we have to go back to hating everyone else in our division. I expect I’ll be pulling for the Steelers next week since I don’t think Baltimore can follow through with the inevitable Bellicheck “Fuck you!” scoring drive that’ll come late in the fourth quarter.
jcricket
Go Pats. Baltimore sucks rocks. I hear NRO are big Baltimore fans (or maybe I just made that up).
Incertus (Brian)
I think I’ve gotten to the point where I’d like to see the Pats get all the way to the Superbowl undefeated, only to fall there two whichever NFC team makes it (though I hope it’s not the Cowboys). That might be the worst sting of all.
andante
Jen…..yesssssssss!
A different matt
There is no exception: Rooting for the Ravens is immoral and unacceptable.
D-Chance.
If the Ravens coaches are smart, they won’t go into the lockerroom after the game.
jcricket
And that folks, is what I’m talking about. Driving down the field in the 4th quarter for another Patriots win.
Hooah!

Damn!

Er…Jen. You said “hoops” and “Carolina” in the same sentence. What do they have to do with one another?

WTG with the timeout call Ravens. Now I know why McNulty’s drinking again.

No it doesn’t.
Damn luck Mics…..

Gasp! Say not that you spent time in the dirtyhippylibrulatheofascist enclave known as Bloomington!

You know what would be sweet?
Pats win the AFC. The Cardinals – who, at 6-6 have a slim chance at a wild card berth – somehow make it to the Super Bowl, which is being played in their stadium. Home field advantage boosts the lowly Cardinals to a championship and ruins the Pats perfect season!
…
why yes, I have been smoking crack. Why do you ask?
Xanthippas
Boy did the Ravens go and give it to the Patriots tonight. That was a hell of a game. And but for the incredibly poor timing of that defensive timeout, they probably would’ve had that game in the bag.

kit smith ftw
W.Thomas Smith Jr
You probably aren’t aware of this, but I convinced WVU to go down like Larry Craig. From Beriut. Shoulda listened to me on the betting thing.
heywood jablomy
strange game – very emotional and back and forth — intense and tough. refs let all the receiver mugging go for 3 quarters than called it at the end. time-out was boneheaded, but so was pats decision to blow a first down play just before the 2-minute warning, for no gain. none of that was on the refs though. and a pass interference on 4th down against ravens D is a hard call to swallow but the replay showed it was there — altho that call has been ignored many times. hmm. then the TD catch could have been overruled — might have been the fairest thing since it would have put the pats at the goal line where they would have had to earn it. frankly, ravens could have tied it with a field goal if they had managed the final secs better. team got mad at coaches and it all went to hell. all in all plenty of tough breaks to go around.
Sensitive Pony Tailed Girly Man
All praise the Patriots for not running up the score again. What sportsmen! And not a suspected murderer in the whole crew, I’ll have you know.
StadiumBlitzer
It’s a shame either team had to win.
gogiggs
You know, normally I wouldn’t root for a stolen team with a murderer* for a captain, but if it prevents a brilliant coach and his talented team from achieving historical greatness**, well, then, I’m on board.
* yeah, I know, he’s really just an accessory to murder, it’s called hyperbole.
** historical greatness within the context of the sport, I’m aware they aren’t curing cancer or inventing democracy or something.
AnonE.Mouse
I’d like to see the Patriots go undefeated if only to have the ’72 Dolphins(the most over-rated team in NFL history)put a fucking cork in their champagne bottles.
That was a pretty good game last night with an ending that couldn’t have been better if it were scripted.
Cindrella Ferret
John this is off topic, but you better have a 15,000 word post on it or wingnuts will have the “proof” they need to have you officially drummed out of the conservative corpse.
Bombadil
There’s the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans go after little boys themselves; Democrats delegate it to their staff.
ET
The enemy of my enemy is my friend (at least temporarily).
Svensker
Any good person despises the Patriots and longs to see Tom Brady get sacked really really hard. Frequently.

I actually tried playing basketball this weekend. My god, that game is freak’n exhausting. We made it to 21-18 in an hour – I lost :'( – and practically keeled over and died.
Zifnab
Yeah, no kidding. Especially if this is the year they manage to pull off the coveted “OMG! We can’t beat anybody at football!” 0-Allof’em record.
Bobbob
I can’t stand the Patriots, especially Tom Brady. But, I have to say that the game last night was probably the best game of the year. Very exciting.
Jim Henley
Not just yes but hell yes.
Ezert
No. Not a bad fan at all. At the Pittsburgh bar I was in last night everybody was rooting for the Ravens. Sure, it could be counterproductive since the Pats haven’t lost two in a row in like five years. But at this point I don’t care who beats them. It’s almost not so they get humbled, but so that their commentator cheerleaders who are so smug about them (Cris Collinsworth, Boomer Esiason) get shut up. I mean, you’d think those two were playing for them or ever played for them. I guess they want to make fans think they did instead of Cincy.
canuckistani
Football .. jeebus, the boringest sport since soccer.
C’mon guys, hockey season is here, everywhere but Toronto where the Leafs haven’t got out of golf mode yet and are still trying for low scores.

BEST. THREAD. EVER.
Timb
As a Colts fan I can say for sure that Dungy is some sort of anti-gay evangelical dude. Combine that with being rich and I’m pretty sure he’s voting Republican. Manning, while a better QB than Brady (it’s a close call), is not nearly as smart as Tom, so his donating money to W would not be a surprise. So, the Colts might be more Republican than the Pats, but look where they come from. Indiana hasn’t voted for A Democrat Presidential candidate since ’64.
Massachusetts, on the other hand, is the home of liberalism and revolution, yet your QB and World Series hero are campaigning for W? Disgrace.
Combine that with the Pats are the most disgusting bullies pro sports has ever seen (they are the Cobra Kai dojo of the NFL) and they make all the 70-3 Division 1 vs Division 2 college football games look equitable.
In conclusion, one could argue the Colts are worse politically, but at least they are class organization that refuses to bully or embarrass their opponents. Winning is fine.
By the way, Pats fans, weather seems to affect your offense. Any idea what the forecast will be in late January at Foxboro? Oops.
Bombadil
Well, they may be disgraceful Republican assholes, but they’re our disgraceful Republican assholes.
And, despite all the whining here in this thread, they’re also winners.
Nyah, nyah, nyah.
Bombadil
Really? Worse than the Oakland Raiders of some years back? Worse than the “Broad Street Bullies”, the Philadelphia Flyers? Methinks the hyperbole is a bit overblown. There’s a difference between being bullies and being that much better than most of the teams they’ve come in contact with.
Timb
They certainly are….
Are they so much better than the Redskins that they needed Brady passing in the 4th quarter while up 42-0?
Regarding the politics, I completely agree you. I’m a baseball fan and if there’s one liberal Democrat in all of MLB, I have yet to read about him (that is also hyperbole, but I’m generalizing here). Sports heroes, in my mind, are forgiven for their politics.
Say what you will about the Colts, but, when they were 13-0, they got there by running the ball and sitting starters when they were up big. What the Patriots did was “wrong”.
P.S. They may be winners, but after watching watching Wes Welker last evening, some of them are little whiny girls. Was there a play where he wasn’t shoving someone after a whistle, complaining about being held, or crying that he was open?
Damned at Random
I’m not only a bad Steeler’s fan, I’m a bad auntie. My neice and nephew are Bostonians and big Pats fans (esp Katie), and I still rooted for Baltimore (if the Ravens were a threat to the Steelers in the division, I would have cheered the Pats)
rawshark
Until you’ve been a fan of a team that has sucked historically you have no idea how awesome it is to hear all the whining about why New England is kicking your teams ass.
jcricket
POTD.
“Sweep the leg, Bruschi.”
I think Steve Nash (not MLB, but NBA) is pretty liberal, right? He’s even fairly outspoken about it.
I read an article once about how the missionary evangelicals infiltrated the NFL and other leagues, which explains the huge rise in “Thanking Jesus” after games (something you never heard in the 70s or 80s).
Mike @ work
Do you think the fans in Baltimore agree with you about the Colts being a class organization?
guyermo
The proof they need is his post announcing he registered as a democrat.
jcricket
Compare the different response between what happened in this case to Republicans. Democrats: A staffer is caught in a sting, immediately fired and the Senator says “we’re cooperating fully, no tolerance for this stuff”.
Republicans: Foley was framed, Larry Craig isn’t gay and has a wide stance, “we should have added more context”, Jeff Gannon said nice stuff about Bush, you’re criminalizing politics, etc.
Democrats can be guilty of the same crimes as Republicans, but because we don’t tolerate it, it doesn’t fester.
Bombadil
They didn’t run that play that to send the Redskins a message — they ran that play to tell every team they’re about to play a message. They’re in it to win, and aren’t easing off.
That said, they looked a tad shaky last night. And that sends a message that maybe they are beatable, after all.
Timb
I’m not sure…they do have another team; it won the Super Bowl; the move was over 20 years ago; any word on whether Philadelphia misses the A’s? Boston misses the Braves? Washington misses the Rangers or Twins?
It was A LOOOONNNNNGGGGG time ago in sports terms
rawshark
The message was ‘we play all 60 minutes’. They learned last year in the playoffs what can happen if you back off or play soft when you have a lead.
Sp far I’ve watched them against 3 teams with ‘frenetic’ defenses and all of them kept the Pats in check, Indy, Philly and Baltimore. Pittsburgh’s defense is faster than all of them IMO. Indy and Baltimore showed NE can is bad at stopping the run, Pittsburgh runs well. Philly showed some secondary issues for NE, Pittsburgh has a great passing game. This could be the week we lose.
AnonE.Mouse
I don’t know how Carlos Delgado votes, but he’s been somewhat vocal about his opposition to the war in Iraq and was told to shut-up by the Mets.
You’re correct about Nash, but he is Canadian-he could be a member of the extreme right party there and still be a Democrat in the US.
Etan Thomas is another guy who’s vocally against the war.I personally thought he was one of the better speakers at the D.C.rally in 2005.
jcricket
True enough. Sarkozky in France would be to the left of Clinton if he ran in America, what with his continued support for the 35-hour work week, national healthare, and other work protections. He’s merely arguing that the transit workers shouldn’t get even more benefits than everyone else gets in France.
Got that righties? He’s not a “friend of Bush” or a believer in “trickle down economics”. He’s a Democrat.
Peter VE
Does it make me a bad Steelers fan to be openly rooting for the Ravens?
Yes.
This has been another edition of easy answers to hard questions.
YOU SHOULD HAVE A LITTLE MORE RESPECT FOR ENDURING MODELL HATE. ( I know he doesn’t own the Ravens anymore, but the stain will never wash off)
DMD
I’m a Stillers fan and want them to destroy the Pats on Sunday, but I’d have more faith in them if the game were at home.
Brady likes the GOP? Not surprising. But no one has commented on how Belicheck and Cheney are never seen together.
