Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

The lights are all blinking red.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Have you seen this crap about Megan, the teen who was harassed online by her neighbors?

Now the town is shunning the neighbor

It’s really a bizarre tale. But as I read it, I find the mother, Lori Drew is at fault despite her pleas to the contrary. She was aware of the game, and even encouraged it. Claiming she wasn’t aware of the negative comments is irresponsible.

A responsible parent would have told her child “Get over it”, and stop fixating.

Kids can be cruel. A parent should know that.

I can see ignoring the woman and no surprise that her clients dropped her like a dead rat, but someone needs to explain to the good townsfolk that while what she did isn’t a crime, false police reports and property damage are illegal and direct death threats, if sent via post or electronic means might land your ass in a federal penn.

The woman’s story has changed since she filed the police report, her lawyer is spinning like crazy.

People shouldn’t hurt her or her family, but I find it sickeningly ironic that she’s threatened to use the internet harrassment laws that were passed in her town, because of her own actions against others…

No sympathy here for her at all. A parent is supposed to nip that shit in the bud, not get in on the “action”. She KNEW what happened was bullshit, that’s why she deleted the account and told people to keep quiet before Megan was officially dead even. That and the incedibly low class move to charge the Meiers when they found out what she had done and tore up the foosball table and dumped it in her driveway.

There is a certain karmic justice that it is the internet that has caused her and her family so much trouble…

If bad judgment–alone–were a crime, most of us would probably be subject to prosecution. I do find it disturbing that this parent would think this was a good idea in the first place. Yes, she told them to say only “nice” things, but she didn’t think far enough ahead to realize how easily this could get out of hand. Indeed, only “nice” things. What kind of parent thinks its OK for their children to be mean-spirited?

This woman would be wise to move herself and her family to an undisclosed location. She is endangering her neighbors. As her next door neighbor said:

“I just really hope that no one comes out here and does something insane,” Buckles said. “If they do, I hope they get the right house.”

Better hope Malkin doesn’t get on this one buddy.

Ironically, I can see this shoring up Huckabee with those who think he’s “too liberal” on some issues. It could give him a fringe-bump for the primaries, but it’d obviously be poison for the general. (Assuming the media does its job and covers this thoroughly, which, I suppose, is a bad assumption.)

Anybody want to venture a guess about how long the “Huckabee pardon scandal” will play?

    It’s got something for everyone:
Huckabee pardoned DuMond because he listened too much to his minister friend and was taken in by the guy’s conversion – unworldly, too influenced by his religion.Huckabee pardoned DuMond because he listened too much to the Clinton conspiracy theorists – crazy conspiracy theorist (and the conspiracy theory is a doozy. Freepers even speculated a few years ago that the rapist was really…wait for it… Bill Clinton) Huckabee didn’t bother to look at or understand the evidence, and thought “exculpatory” DNA evidence was ignored – plays into “unscientific” meme suggested by his declaring he doesn’t believe in evolution. Huckabee is not only too gullible, but is a terrible judge of character – and we’ve already seen the damage a president like that can do.Huckabee pardoned or paroled too many people is a lib, soft-on-crime, bleeding heart – for the law-and-order types. And of course the current idiocy, that he doesn’t even know enough not to lie about it.

I also get a real kick out of how this is playing on Free Republic. A few years ago, they were excoriating Huckabee for not pardoning the guy immediately. Now they’re excoriating him allowing the parole at all. Doublethink at its finest.

So I was reading on Huffington Post that great example of online journalism (cough cough) about the fact that Dems are planning on giving Bush his money for the war because they want to continue to fund the domestic agenda and not cause the federal government to shut down.

Now the guys on huffingtonpost went crazed of course since this is evidence of a Democrat roll-over to Bush by giving him money and also agree to less stringent rules on the war being conducted. Basically, they went against Bush and blinked first.

The question though is how does one deal with a character that seems to be immobile block of stone who won’t negotiate, won’t clean up and use more efficiently the funds given to him, have the 101 fighting keyboardist at his beck and call to kick up noise, and a press that itself has turned into a political tool for Republicans at least in the talk show format.

I can well understand why the Democrats fear. I mean look at the fucking parade of incompetence, corruption, and scandals that have been going on since Bush started? Yet there hasn’t been any repercussions unless the scandal happens to be about sex. How are the fuck are they able to get away with it? But in the end, Democrats need to stop worrying about perception and do what’s right. That’s all that is being asked of them. If they lost the whole victim attitude they can actually get things accomplished.

I don’t have a real point to this post other than feeling depressed that the status quo is continues and that we still gotten anywhere. I mean jeezus how long are we going to waiting for that fucking contempt charge on Condi? Arrgh! It’s fucking joke.

Cain, I think the Dems are hosed on this one, because if they cut the funding Bush really will hose the troops in the field (my rep, Udall, indicated that he believed this). And since the Dems really do support the troops, this is too unthinkable to risk. It really is hard to deal with someone who has no rational brakes.

People need to face it. The troops are being held hostage by George W. period, end of story. If the dems did indeed cut the funding Bush would leave them there to starve all the while claiming it was the dems fault. I am sure the dems know this and are holding out because it’s the only thing they can do. It’s either hold out and let it be a “slow bleed” or shoot and hope the hostage taker (bush) doesn’t pull the trigger as well which you know damn well he will do. It sucks but that’s all there is to it. The real test will be in april when there are no more troops.

    ____________

    · parsley
    · sage
    · rosemary
    · thyme
    ____________

Which looks fine as long as the text doesn’t wrap around the line on any of the items. If it does, you can always put spaces between the lines.

    The code for that is:

          [strong]·[/strong] list item

    Dreggas,

Totally agree that Bush would rather let the troops starve than to budge an inch. He’s that psycho. Since there’s no room for any kind of negotiations we’re stuck with the current set up.

We have less than 365 days tell this slow-motion trainwreck is over. I hope to God that we have our troops back out of harms way.

Then you tell me what is wrong with wishing everybody ‘io SATURNalia!

What matters is that people of faith get are the ones fit for leadership in a democracy, right?

Even though I celebrate with parties that tend to lead to ‘an opportunity for men to be completely free with their fellowmen, sometimes evolving into homosexual and sometimes also pedophilic relations’, if I am a ‘person of faith’ you had better let my religion into the public square, baby!

Well, for starters, last time I checked Jews don’t celebrate Christmas.

Don’t worry, though; the next time someone tells me “happy holidays” because they want to cover Christmas AND New Year’s, I’ll spit on them. You know, the spirit of the season.

Does “Godforsaken” count? I mean, I’m Godless, but He left me. I was abandoned by my Heavenly Father. No support, no visits, not even a birthday card.

And that’s not true about Him loving ALL His children. If we’re all His children, then God must be an NBA player.

What is the going rate for raising the Child of the Deity?

Pfft. Why should the Christians be the only one to have Christmas? In our attempts to not exlude any other faiths (which was nice and well-meaning of us), we seem to have made it so that the term “Christmas” is ONLY for Christians.

Maybe I’m wrong, but that is a sense that I seem to be getting. And I’m sorry, but it’s just as much a cultural holiday as it is a religious one (if not more so now). To me, Christmas is pretty decorated trees, nice music, good food, Charlie Brown and Frosty the Snowman on tv, watching my nephews run around like lunatics with their new toys, watching the Santa Claus parade, donating to the Salvation Army and to the food bank, and goosing my husband under the mistletoe. No, I don’t believe in God, I most certainly do not go to church, and I have an active distaste for most organized religion. And I’m still going to call it Christmas. So there.

    And Merry Christmas.

Gosh, fellas. What’s wrong with saying “Merry CHRISTmas?”

Well, for starters, last time I checked Jews don’t celebrate Christmas.

Good point. Psycheout, do you feel that Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. should be forced to say “Merry Christmas”? Will you waive a boycott for businesses that say “Happy Holidays” if they are not owned by Christians? Does the proportion of nonChristians that work there matter? Should there be a law passed making “Merry Christmas” the only acceptable greeting between December 1st and 25th?

Do you feel your merriment at the expensive presents and decorations for Christmas is diminished if you are wished “Happy Holidays”? Do you think Jesus would be upset that a business doesn’t invoke His name to make money off of (what is alleged to be) His birthday (well, likely not really his birthday, actually it was the date of the winter solstice.)

And, Psicko, I was wondering. Should I be offended when a false Christian like you says “Merry Christmas”? If so, should I be less offended by that, or by someone who innocently wishes me a Merry Christmas to celebrate Gift Day? And, while I’m at it, which should offend me more — your perverse and demonic “Merry Christmas” or an honest and forthright “Happy Holidays”?

As a Hindu I don’t really care (and I think most Hindus don’t care either). I’ll be happy to say Merry Christmas since I know that the meaning about the greetings is really just love in your fellow man so I don’t really let my religion get in the way of such things.

Damn, I miss the 70s and 80s when we didn’t have to worry about shit like this.

Sikeout, you are such a poser. Look at you trying to be all jewish-like by taking the “o” out of god and writing it “G-d”. How cute.

But I’m guessing you don’t know why we do that, because if you did, you’d also take a letter out of “Christ”.

Can we get back to our discussion about forcing people to participate in empty religious rituals in order to reinforce cultural hegemony? Those are fun. Then we can get back to talking about how fucked up radical Muslims are for wanting to convert people to Islam and follow their laws, even if you’re not a Muslim.

    Happy Hannukah, bitch.

Psycheout, I notice you never answered any of my questions. So I’ll repost a few that I’d really like to know:

    – Do you feel your merriment at the expensive presents and decorations for Christmas is diminished if you are wished “Happy Holidays”?

    – Do you think Jesus would be upset that a business doesn’t invoke His name to make money off of (what is alleged to be) His birthday?

(It’s very unlikely that Dec 25 is really His birthday, of course, since clues in the gospels would place it during lambing season – the spring. However, Dec 25 was the date of the winter solstice, and church authorities in the 4th century selected it to compete with the cult of Mithras.)
