I normally use firefox, but need to use IE with a specific application. When I clink on links, it opens the page in a new window, but the window is not maximized. How do I set IE up so that when I click on a link, it either:
A.) Opens a completely maximized new window.
B.) Opens it in a new tab like firefox.
Thanks in advance.

You can right-click the link and select ‘Open in new tab’…
Michael D.
True, but if it’s a Javascript link, you can’t do that.
John, not sure if you can do that. I don’t think this is an attribute you can set.

Will FF’s user agent switcher help in this case? Fooling the application requiring you to open IE?

Hold down Ctrl when clicking a link and it will open in a new tab.
To get around the JS problem Michael mentioned:
Go to Tools>Internet Options. On the General tab, click the Settings button for Tabs.
Under ‘When a Pop-up Is Encountered’, check “Always open pop-ups in a new tab.” You can also check “A new tab in the current window” under ‘Open links from other programs’.

There is a plugin for Firefox that will allow you to open any link in an IE tab.

All you need to do is go to the Internet Explorer icon, right click and go to properties and change it to launch Maximized.

FireFox has an IE add-on that works quite well. You do have to let the add-on know that you want to render certain sites in IE. The little FF icon in the bottom right-hand corner can set the page to IE add-on, once you download and install the add-on.
I use it frequently and recommend it.

I use an extension called “IE Tab” that does exactly this, for when a page wont load right in FF.

The old fix was –
Maximize the window. Hold down the Control key while you close the window. The next time that window is opened it will be full size.

I use IE Tab here. It works wonderfully well and for those sites that are coded to strict Mickeysoft standards(which means they break strict W3C standards…like Andy Sullivan’s blog), it is a must-have extension. It even allows you to perform Mickeysoft updates through Firefox.

I use a program called iemaximizer.

All new IE Windows are automatically maximized.

You should be able to Control+Click to open an IE link in a new tab. (Was this not working?) Note that tabs are new to IE7, so if you are using 6 then you are out of luck.

OT, but John, have you been commentating over at Digby’s recently? There’s someone posting there under your name with stuff that seems…..unusually dickish, given your postings here.

I also recommend IE Tab—I use it all the time. Salon.com, for example, doesn’t work in some instances with Firefox, but it works fine with IE Tab. I notice also that video clips that don’t open on Firefox will open right away if I click the button the converts the current tab to IE tab.
IE Tab.

I echo the suggest of using IETab, it opens the link using the Internet Explorer rendering engine in a new tab in Firefox.

Just my rotten luck. “IE Tab is not available for Linux.”
There is actually a Flash game where the download page detected I was using Linux and WOULD NOT even let me download the demo. I could understand a warning, “are you sure? the game doesn’t normally run on your OS” but not letting me…that was a shock.
(The game runs fine using the ‘wine’ setup – duplicating Windows API to a great extent)

I love IE Tab, but it’s been my experience that it leaks memory like a sieve. Just be aware that you might have to reboot your machine more frequently.
YMMV.

John, IE remembers it’s last “non-maximized” size, and for some reason, uses that setting when opening links.
My suggestion: Just open up one instance of IE. If that window is in a non-maximized state, great. (If it’s maximized, click the upper-right button to un-maximize it). Now, with your mouse, drag the corners of the IE window as far as you can towards the edges of your screen. Once you’re happy with it, close IE! It will remember this new non-maximized size.
That’s about the best advice I can give on this dismal browser.

People who do links with Javascript should be taken out and shot.
