Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

White supremacy is terrorism.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

The lights are all blinking red.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Some of my favorite posts at the Great Orange Satan are Darksyde’s science updates. I almost never miss one.

Consider this an open thread.

Hey, here’s a crazy solstice fact for you. There is no official start to winter. No scientific body or international standards organization has ever sat down to say when winter officially starts. So that snow you’ve been shovelling the last three weeks? You can call it winter, and spit in the faces of the nitpickers who tell you that winter doesn’t start until the 21st. (They’re usually wrong about the actual date of the solstice too).

Raw Story has an incredibly distressing piece that I’d love to hear what the apologists for excessive police force have to say about. Y’all know who you are…

Question for all you smart-alecks here:
We all know supporters of Ron Paul bring an unmistakable… fervor to this primary season, and they passionately hold the opinion the good doctor isn’t getting a fair shake from the Establishment.
Say, hypothetically, Paul gets creamed in Iowa and New Hampshire. Will his supporters go quietly into that good night, or will they claim their man has been screwed? And if it’s the latter, what will they do about this injustice?
    Just food for thought…

[If] Paul gets creamed in Iowa and New Hampshire. Will his supporters go quietly into that good night, or will they claim their man has been screwed? And if it’s the latter, what will they do about this injustice?

They’ll do what they’ve always done: they’ll complain about how the Jew-media distorted their message and the *inner-city drug-pushers* distorted the vote.

Then they’ll retreat to their compounds in Idaho and plot their next beer-hall putsch.

I’m guessing that they’ll rage against the dying of the light.

From the other orange meat [Reason‘s Hit & Run group blog], Nick Gillespie on Dinesh D’Souza: the principle of moral freedom, that is “the freedom to live however you want as long as you don’t harm others,” is controversial.

    Bonus, libertarians are run-amok pillow-biting dope-fiends.

    Until I saw this:

    http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122007A.shtml

I was actually unaware that the continued US Occupation of Iraq was illegal under Iraqi law, and has been for longer than you’d think.

El Residente has Maliki following his rulebook in dealing with Legislative Branch opposition, just ignore it and sign whatever the hell you want. It’s not like anyone’s paying any attention.

I honestly think that Ron Paul could shock everyone and do surprisingly well in at least one of the primaries–maybe coming in third, or even second, if (when?) there are more scandals involving the crossdresser, the imaginary marcher, etc.

At that point, you’d hope that he’d run as a third-party candidate. And he could be the perfect storm, as he can peel off both sane righties (anti-war, pro-Constitution) and more traditional ones (abortion a nationwide crime, xenophobic).

    libertarians are run-amok pillow-biting dope-fiends.

That’s really unfair. Mostly, they’re just bigots who want to be able to -sell- smoke pot without fear of legal repercussions.

It is an interesting question about Paul’s long term impact on R politics. I think this time around the Huck will gut most of Paul’s impact, down the road it’s something to think about.

The eventual R nominee and what happens in Nov is going to mean something.

I suspect Ron Paul’s only real purpose is to try to keep “libertarians” as part of the Republican party.

I can’t think of any other reason why he runs as a Republican, other than to provide cover.

Putting an end to the magnet is the idea that will work, the problem is that the sanctions for employers are minor, there already is a federal sanction – notable for not workng at all.

So how long is Drudge going to keep the Huckabee “YOU… CHRIST… A HAPPY YEAR” picture up on his site?

Of course, the placement of the candy cane to frame the message is totally coincidental… yeah…
