Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

White supremacy is terrorism.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

This really is a full service blog.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The willow is too close to the house.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

I was promised a recession.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Just saw The Great Debaters. It was OK–a little melodramatic at times, but still had some memorable parts. OK for history buffs and egg-heads. I’d recommend waiting for video release.

    Do the right thing.

    Always do.

Question: do any of you live in cities with a chapter of the Guardian Angels? They’re coming to Halifax, as the crime rate has increased (partially due to the mayor and the police refusing to accept the fact that despite the small-town feel, they’re not actually IN a small town.) Some people are for it, some are vehemently opposed (mostly the aforementioned mayor and police.) For any of you who have had them established in your city: notice any difference?

if you insist… Let me quote my brother Radio Raheem:
“Let me tell you the story of “Right Hand, Left Hand.” It’s a tale of good and evil. Hate: It was with this hand that Cane iced his brother. Love: These five fingers, they go straight to the soul of man. The right hand: the hand of love. The story of life is this: Static. One hand is always fighting the other hand; and the left hand is kicking much ass. I mean, it looks like the right hand, Love, is finished. But, hold on, stop the presses, the right hand is coming back. Yeah, he got the left hand on the ropes, now, that’s right. Ooh, it’s the devastating right and Hate is hurt, he’s down. Left-Hand Hate K.O.ed by Love. “

A Kos guy (also an Obama supporter) is reporting a laundry list that apparently says Clinton’s folks don’t know how to read a rule book.

I think this is Clinton’s new campaign that even she can Transcend. In this case, she’s transcending rules.

I’m absolutely certain that by Monday Hillary will take complete charge of this and show us that fucking around with elections is wrong.

Sounds like Clinton won the popular vote in Nevada, but Obama won more rural votes and more districts, so he ends up with one more delegate than Clinton (13/12).

So Obama wins the delegate count and Hillary wins the popularity contest. Demographics don’t look good for Obama though, whites and latinos voted against him. The black vote looks bad for Clinton, with almost 4 out of 5 blacks voting for Obama. Edwards performance was absolutely dismal, less than 5% of the total vote. Ouch.

More neck and neck for the foreseeable future. Fresh ten pound sacks of crap for everyone to fling at each other.

I feel a self-fulfilling prophecy here, assuming Obama in the winrar.

5% (which is equal to dead-zero in poli-math) vote for Obama because “he don’t care ’bout our issues. Black peoples dunnit *know* what it like to be poor” Obama has no incentive to keep their vote, earns brownie points with the center by avoiding amnesty for illegals.

Oh well. Race in, race out. Not like Hillary is going to give two shits about them after the 1st year.

I know that Edwards has consistently made a poor showing and I’m not an Edwards supporter. I wonder though if part of his problem is that he could come with the cure for cancer and that would be given one line in a two page story. The rest of the copy would be devoted to the back-and-forth between the Hillary and Obama campaigns. I’m guessing that the narrative of the first black man vs the first woman for President is just a lot more attractive to the press.

I’d like to take the crapload of money I lost last week and buy everybody a drink, or a joint, or some crack, or whatever habit-forming shit you down to tolerate this nonsensical ass-backwards nipple-slip of a country we live in, but I can’t since I already imagined I bought a Harley with it and cruised to Mexico on it and rode my ride until a sweet spot in the sand and the sun became my bed where I laid and got drunk and got stoned and watched the day turn to night turn to day again when I got back on my bike and my way.

I don’t usually spend on myself like that, but I really needed the vacation.

There are two choices as I see it. Either John is throwing back to Spike Lee (OoOOO I got the Spike Lee Joint Collection for Xmas — five movies on three discs, as well as Inside Man!), or has recently become a Dr. Laura fan. (For those who don’t listen to wingnut radio — that’s this woman’s signoff (warning — nekkid pictures).

Krista, wrt the Guardian Angels — they came into southwest Houston shortly after Katrina. I’ve read nor heard any refernces to them specifically, but crime has gone down in the city as a whole, with the exception of property crime (up just enough for the pant-wetters to hollar). They had been a strong force in my city during the ’80’s and had a good rep. From what I’ve seen, they are more than a little media saavy — they announce they are coming in — then they just do their good work.

Dennis, I am (and have been for some years) an Edwards supporter and you are quite right.

But even with all of what you pointed out, I had hoped at the beginning of this race that the Dems could just stick with the important issues and not play the game like the republicans do. I hate that the creepy/weird South Carolina stuff on the republicans’ side didn’t get more press.

In my experience, being on a board is a way to pad your resume particularly because you already have money. (I’m not pointing at you demi, just saying.) Having been a volunteer in a charitable organization, with a board full of people related to each other, and with no funny money things going on, it’s still, in my humble experience, only pointed towards those on the board and what it does for them. I know not all charities are like that, but I have, since that experience, always been suspect of mushroom type charities.

Oh, absolutely. I happen to belong to the board of this particular charity because it’s a very personal thing for a close friend of mine, and they needed someone to fill a particular seat.

I’ll even plead guilty to having put it on my resume, unlike any “real” charitable work I do. It’s not something I do out of what little goodness I have in my heart; I do it as a favor for a friend.

You know, I am two years out from retirement at 64, and last week, I had a chat with a coworker who is about 25 years younger than me. We were commiserating over the fact her office is located in the director’s suite. As a result, she is constantly exposed to their incredible unethical gaming of every day life in this organization. We both lamented the fact that apparently, doing the right thing just does not even come into play anymore in our society. Two motives rule. 1) Have I got mine? and 2) Show me the money. That’s it. Game over. It is sad really. I just hope to survive my remaining two years so I can cash out with full retirement benefits, all the while hopping there is no last minute effort to screw me out of them.
