    I beg to differ, only because if it was grammatically correct it would detract from the cuteness factor in that bad grammar = imagining how a cute cat or kitten would write something.

    Sorry, not the case. The meme is built on previous 4chan memes that involve the implicit mockery of poor grammar by the Internet’s lower classes (Examples: Intragoogles, ZOMG!!!11, idk my bff Jill, l337, teh [noun], etc.). Basically: mockery of stupid people.

    Then came the introduction of captioning, then came the introduction of cat captioning.

    Recipe complete. Memes have extensive histories; it’s good to know where this crap comes from.

    If it helps, people have found that lolcats do have their own internally consistent grammar. It’s just not grammar as we know it.

    What’s great about this research is that it inadvertently targeted exactly what’s happening in lolcat images: the animal has been changed from being just a regular cute kitty, to being a cute kitty with special attributes created by the caption.

    Ah, no. These experiments followed a standard technique in studies of so-called change detection: show a scene for 250 ms, show a mask (e.g., a flat gray field) for 250 ms, show another scene, etc., in a cycle, until the subject identifies the difference. (Approximately; there can be some variation in the design.) That’s not at all what’s going on with how we perceive locat images. There’s no comparison image, we look at them for more than a glance, etc.

    (One of my colleagues does these kinds of studies. Here’s a link to some demos; it’s pretty cool stuff, one of those things where you think, “How the hell did I not notice that earlier?”)

    Change blindness discoveries scare the hell out of me. The demonstration where a woman is stopped by a white man to ask for directions, and then is replaced by a black man, and then replaced again by a white man is frightening as all get out.

    Like, one day I’ll come home and not notice my beloved computer has been stolen and replaced by a big toaster that goes “whirrrrrrr” and I won’t notice for the first hour.
