Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Second rate reporter says what?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

This blog will pay for itself.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The words do not have to be perfect.

    Guest Commentary

Ah, a new year, a fresh start, another chance for telecom corporations, their lobbyists, the President and Vice-President, and their bought-and-paid-for allies in Congress to try again for amnesty from prosecution. Folks, don’t you wish you had that kind of firepower going for you the next time you break a law?
After all, all these corporations did was help American intelligence agencies illegally spy on American citizens’ phone and e-mail conversations in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Those poor companies! The Bush/Cheney Administration asked them to spy on Americans – beginning before 9/11, mind you – and the telecoms simply had no choice! We don’t really expect them to be liable for breaking the law, do we?
And really, that’s half the problem: we have NO idea of the extent of their lawbreaking. Presidents Bush and Cheney are claiming “executive privilege” and the telecoms ain’t talking. With the amnesty that’s coming up for a vote, not only would the telecoms be immune from lawsuits for violating their customers’ – American citizens’ – Constitutional rights, we’d never know just what they did and are still doing today.
This should be open-and-shut. If telecom companies allowed the Bush Administration access to American citizens’ phone conversations and e-mails in violation of the FISA law (which, contrary to Republican propaganda, DOES allow for wiretapping of any foreign/al-Qaeda suspects wherever they are), those customers should be liable for damages. But here’s White House spokesman Tony Fratto’s response:
“We’re exactly three weeks away from the date when terrorists can be free to make phone calls without fear of being surveilled by U.S. intelligence agencies”.
It’s a terrific scare tactic, but dead wrong. No one thinks that U.S. intelligence agencies should be denied surveillance capabilities. No one. FISA already provides multiple opportunities to listen in on suspected terrorists, sometimes even after the surveillance has already happened!
The sole issue here is whether outlaw telecoms should be given a pass on their behavior. And since President Bush has said he’ll veto any FISA legislation unless it includes telecom amnesty, it’s clear that he’s ready to sacrifice American readiness in order to cover up for the big telecom companies and their illegal actions. They did him a favor – for reasons only Bush and Cheney could and should have to explain – and now the telecoms expect to be exempt from paying the price for breaking the law.
As if this issue couldn’t be more clear, it was recently revealed that these supposedly patriotic telecom companies actually stopped their surveillance(!) when the federal government was too lazy or incompetent(!!) to pay their bills for these taps(!!!). Could their motivations be any clearer? The Bush/Cheney is all for terrorist surveillance – but can’t get their act together to pay the bills. The telecoms are all for helping this surveillance – but only if they get paid. And both parties just conveniently ignore this little thing called the Constitution, along with the even more explicit FISA law.
If the President, Vice President, and rich telecom executives won’t honor the law in this country, American citizens have an obligation to make them do so. The only way to do this is if Congress refuses to provide telecoms with amnesty for their lawbreaking. We are a nation of laws, not fear-mongering and lies that try to twist our patriotism into something wholly un-American.
Senator Chris Dodd and a handful of allies in Congress are determined that no amnesty for telecoms will pass. He has threatened a filibuster over the matter. His own Democratic majority leader, Harry Reid, has set up major roadblocks for that filibuster to succeed. (Reid, along with WV Senator Jay Rockefeller, is a major recipient of telecom companies’ political donations). Dodd will go ahead with his filibuster…where this country goes from there, no one knows.
Please help end this farce and help this country get back to the rule of law. Contact Senator Dodd at (202) 224-2823 and let him know you have his back against telecom amnesty. Better yet, contact our own two Delaware senators, Joe Biden (202) 224-5042 and Tom Carper (202) 224-2441 and let them know that they MUST stand by Senator Dodd in preserving our Constitutional rights. Only then, with telecom amnesty defeated, will we ever know what the Bush/Cheney administration did to subvert Americans’ privacy, the FISA law, and the Constitution over the past seven years.

(Sorry – more important matters intruded and I fired off a big ol’ letter to the editor)

The way Michelle writes it, it looks as if The Huck’s endorsing himself–
““I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” Huckabee said in a statement. “Of the remaining candidates …”
Which really gets weird when you put that with the next paragraph–
““Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee’s candidacy that compels my endorsement,” he added. “Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. ”
Michelle thinks Mike talks about himself in the third person–oh, and The Huck is totally thinking that this Mike Huckabee is a really cool frood who knows where his towel is.
    The original quote from CNN–
““I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” Hunter said in a statement. “Of the remaining candidates … ”
Michelle can’t even cut and paste properly…

Yeah. Who else is Hunter going to endorse? Aren’t Giuliani, Romney and McCain all pretty bad from a nativist’s point of view because their position on immigration is the pro-big business one? And Tancredo’s already out of the race. The options were Huckabee, and with him at least they can get a theocracy so it wouldn’t be a total loss, or R0n Paul.

What do they expect Hillary or Obama to do that’s so horrible? Fail to promote corporate welfare? Neglect their duties to spy on them? Forget to cut taxes for the überwealthy?

This populism that’s driving Huckabee’s campaign forward is a menace. The hoi polloi should stick to venting their frustrations at the liberal elites. This business of allowing them to direct their ire at conservative authority figures is bound, sooner or later, to make them forget their place.

Ha! Yeah, I remember that about NC: “Sure, we’ve got our embarrassing, rednecky aspects, but at least we’re not South Carolina! WTF is wrong with that state?”

Then I went with my friend to visit his sister and her husband in SC. For those who can’t be arsed clicking on Malkin’s site, here’s some of the highlights from the comment section.

Huckabee put a Mexican consulate in the small city of Little Rock, which can only mean that he WANTED illegal immigration in his state. Huckabee has been endorsed by the socialist, anti-voucher NEA. Huckabee believes global warming is caused by man. Huckabee is a pro-life liberal.

I guess it’s a sign of the end times. Up is down, left is right, etc.

Romney’s the only thing resembling sanity left.

As the old saying goes, better to be thought of as an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Electile Dysfunction : the inability to become aroused over any of the choices for president put forth by either party in the 2008 election year.

If Mitt doesn’t win, I’m headed for France.

After Bush, I felt that there were still some real Americans left near Political Power.”WRONG”.

    Revolution is the only answer.

Now you see, boys and girls, why I keep asking you not what your chosen candidate has said, but what is his record of manifest, tangible accomplishment relevent to the executive position of President of the United Sates (and why I’m supporting Rudy who has the strongest record of actual executive accomplishment).

    Can I vote for Reagan?

One of the things that I find ?amazing? – most Americans don’t understand what the POTUS does vs. Congress. McCan’t claims all these things he’ll do as POTUS – well Congress is the place where rules get written.

Are you sure that is the same Duncan Hunter who came to the September 15 counter-rally against the hate America always, antiwar moonbats?

i don’t hate huck, i just know that he is a pro-life democrat he is liberal and i am a conservative

No matter what happens, a Democrat (from the current crop of politicos running) in the White House would be a disaster that must be avoided at ALL costs.

don’t think I would use the word “lucky” in describing Rudy’s actions on 9/11. Some people rise to the occasion or the circumstances they find themselves in and some sink.

Not voting at all is not going to send the signal you want. Rather, it will reinforce the GOP’s slide to the left as they chase the votes of those that still care enough to vote.

have strongly supported Bush, until his slide into the Democratic party.

McCain would be terrible, but who but a liberal shill would make such a remark?). Now there’s a real conservative for you, eh?

(Romney) gets a reported $7-15 million a year from his stock in Bain. Some of that money came from selling 3Com to a Chinese company that helped build missile defense systems for Saddam and the Taliban. Not a problem? I can see someone’s judgement vis-a-vis China being influenced by $7 million dollars, but maybe he’s above all that.

How many traitors do we have in this country??? LOTS!From the report, one is Prof. John Lewis from my alma mater. In addition to Perry, Clinton, et al

Yes, unfortunately many in this country put a buck ahead of national security.

Things are NOT looking up for the general election. Unfortunately, unlike the lefties, we have nowhere to go while they mess up the country for the next 4 years. I didn’t want much from a candidate, just the desire to win against our enemies, a secure border, and government hands OUT of my pocket.

Maybe a “conservative” party will evolve from this mess were in. I sure hope it happens before we lose all of our voting power to the hispanics. We are there now in Texas.

You are a fool to think you could come to a site like MM and put one over on the smart well informed people here.

Judging by this reaction though, if Fred Thompson endorses John McCain (as he did in 2000) we may have full-scale mutiny on our hands.

Huckleberry is as screwed on Biblical theology as if The Good Samaritan had gone and left the robbery victim DYING IN THE ROAD and gone chasing after the entire ROBBER DEN to bless them with prosperity FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES AND MANY GENERATIONS TO COME – as a fine example of “CHRISTIAN CHARITY”. I live too close to the Mexico border, where one of our main stories today is how the border bandit coyotes are now using small children as HUMAN SHIELDS.

I’ll have to see what Mitt does between now and November, but I have a nice list of Write-In’s ready – Michelle, Malkin, Ann Coulter, Oliver North, Franklin Graham…. etc etc, etc – they will not fail me!

We already KNOW what Jesus would do – the devil did offer Jesus ALL the nations of the entire world, and Jesus did NOT sell himself, even to the highest bidder. Jesus always stood by His Word, and His integrity, and His Covenant.

You mean: Rudy’s the only thing resembling sanity left. Rudy is the only one who hasn’t flip-flopped on an important issue. I

    And

We have truly become a nation of dumbed down sheep.

Things are NOT looking up for the general election. Unfortunately, unlike the lefties, we have nowhere to go while they mess up the country for the next 4 years. I didn’t want much from a candidate, just the desire to win against our enemies, a secure border, and government hands OUT of my pocket.

I hear there is this nice place in the middle of a desert, it’s supposedly an Oasis, they say it was called Babylon once…
