I find it amazing that Senators are so willing and ready to give full immunity to an entire industry having no idea the extent of what the telecoms have done, and having the WH so clearly fight Congress in turning over paperwork relating to such actions.
Maybe all the Senators missed 4th grade, but you only hide something if it’s against your best interest to let others see it. Smoke, meet fire, etc.
pharniel
Punchy – I have a senaking suspicion that they know precisly what the telcoms, and themselves, have to hide.
I also find it haliarous that after 7 years of the GSE’s being evil gubment entities they are suddenly the NARs saviorus for the housing market by increasing the conforming loan limit to the sky and making them give out bad loans which got us into this mess.
seriously crazyness going on. someone needs to light some asses on fire.
I saw a segment on CNN in the break room about how independent truckers are using old trucks with shit-tas-tic gas milage and near point of breakdown. better stimulus package is to spend that 150 billion giveing 0% 30 year loans for new tracktor trialor rigs to all those guys, ones that are in full repair and consume less fuel, and fix the fucking electric infrastructure in the NE, and MW areas.
maybe even lay some serious fiber optic cable or other invesetments in, y’know, capitol instead of hosues.
"Fair and Balanced" Dave
Not so “amazing” when you realize how much money the telecoms have been shoveling into the campaign coffers of Jay Rockefeller, Harry Reid, et al.
Will Rogers once quipped that America has “the best politicians money can buy.” He was right about the money part but wrong about our politicians being the best.
Dug Jay
Was the “Godzilla” figure supposed to be a metaphor of some kind for Karl Rove with Bambi representing the typical Democrat? If so, it’s pretty damn good.
Who’s Marv Howard?
Punchy
Here’s what I dont understand–most rational Americans would be against prosecution of the telecoms if what they did was wrapped up in patriotic fevor. They’d be unwilling to support a trial if the company was helping to catch terrorists. In effect, public sentiment (if not existing FISA law) would grant them de facto immunity.
Their insane push to get this tells me that they must have gone egregiously BEYOND the norm (read: what most Americans find acceptable), possibly into spying for the Republican party. They must have crossed about 74 lines, and gone 5 miles beyond, for this immunity to be so “necessary”.

More likely… Telecoms have been having financial problems as of late. Last thing they want is to have to fight a bunch of ridiculous court cases.
Occam’s Razor is your friend.

Yep. Either that, or someone has pictures.

Now, now. I know the TCs cut wiretaps on people WHO WANT 2 KILL US when the Feeb didn’t pay the bill, but that doesn’t mean they’re strapped for cash. And it doesn’t mean the Feeb is a bunch of incompetent boobs. Really. As long as you listen to the pResident every thing will be just fine.

It’s not so amazing when you realize that the evolution toward government secrecy and loss of protections against govenrment intrusion … and degradation of Congress’ power to declare war … all began right after WWII with the invention of the Cold War. Over the next 60 years, citizens became more and more desensitized to the abuses and the decay of Constitutional authority and more and more used to the idea of a unitary executive.
911 didn’t really change everything. It just created the opportunity to continue this trend. The reason why the government looks so inept at reigning itself in is because it stopped practicing the art back the time of Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers. Lying to the people and co-opting power just became de rigueur a long time ago. It’s just that some people started paying attention only recently that makes it all seem “surprising.”
The ship sailed a long time ago. You can’t just sit back and expect people in congress to get it back for you because you wished for the Constitutional pony. The people have to demand it in no uncertain terms. That hasn’t happened yet.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
I HATE this fact, but there is logic behind this.
The reason they want to give immunity is because they don’t want the telecoms to dismantle that which they’ve created. There’s a general consensus among the mentally fit in Congress that wiretapping targeting citizens should be reiterated as illegal, but the overarching apparatus should stick.
My problem? Over here:
Why is it that the apparatus should be held valuable? Because were undr attak oh noes tell mi kidz i lerv dem im off 2 war lol!!!!!
Goddamn over-reactive pussies. It’s been 6 years. Most bad-ass dude since tried to attack Fort Dix with a medium pepperoni, extra cheese. I walked by the WTC hole for years on commute. Never saw another nutcase with a bomb strapped to them.

From Wilfred’s link. I am particularly pleased that Balloon-Juice has seen fit to focus on bullshit themes like “Unity Pony” which are all about snarking what amounts to a general campaign packaging strategy, something that is common to every large political campaign … and completely ignore the total and abject failure of the media to properly report — and police — the real stories behind our dysfunctional political process.
BJ is the kind of place where, if we don’t push back against it, 2008 will roll by in a fog of snarkity snarkitude and then we could end up with President Romney a year from now and everyone going, WTF happened? How could we elect an idiot like
George BushMitt Romney president? How, indeed. By not paying fucking attention, that’s how. It’s easier than you think to completely fuck up the country. All it takes is deciding to vote for a guy who seems like he’d be cool to go have a beer with.
Dreggas
Heh, Shillary goes out and tries to shive Obama with Rezko (and looks amateurish in the process) and then gets nailed on TV today with a picture of her and bill with ol’ tony, not much unlike a picture of Bush and Abramoff. I bet bill never asked how much tony benched tho.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
Given all of the AOBB (Anti-Obama-Bunker-Buster) weapons journalists have been noting in the last week, I’m having a hard time not thinking this is all Hillary’s doing. But then again, that clip of Bill obviously lying is ass off — about Nevada and 6 Hispanic voters — kinda pushed me over the edge… so I’m probably not thinking clearly on this one.
TheFountainHead
I posted this in the previous thread and I’m bringing it here, partly because I’m pissy this morning, partly to support what TZ is saying, and partly because I just can. Snarkiness is all fine and good, but it doesn’t change jack.
I don’t understand the people who think sending Boy George or any of the upper deck of cards he surrounds himself with would act as a deterrent for more than one, maybe two presidencies, if that, not that it’s even remotely probable that any of them would ever see a day in court. The only true deterrent comes when the people of this country, as a collective, not as individuals, exercise their constitutionally granted powers over the government. As a collective, we sat back and watched this happen. We have given far too much power over to intermediary groups like the mainstream media and corporate lobbyists, and in so doing, have let the contact with our government corrode. We won’t see better behavior in the White House until they feel the pain of an angry and undivided (no Obamishness here, though if the shoe fits…) electorate.
Shorter: If your Congressional representatives are fucking you, fuck them back. If they are fucking you by not fucking the Executive when they should, fuck them all the harder. Why leave it to them to play hardball? It’s our fucking country.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
Dregs, I owe you about 5 beers for that. That made my day and it’s not even 1 yet. Thanks.

The most remarkable thing about the article is the stress that Obama is not Muslim, suggesting that if he was then the following bit of out and out bigotry would be ok:
Is this motherfucker for real?
Jen
Winfred, I dunno if it’s a cop-out, but sometimes it’s the only way I can cope with overwhelming levels of stupidity. Is it possible that the only Jews right-wing knee-jerk moronic enough to believe this kind of thing are Jews who wouldn’t vote Democratic anyway?
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
Second.
I disagree with this, though. State Secrets privilege and an unprepared opposition party really allowed for these assholes to provide a top-down insurgence.
Constitutional action will only become useful Jan 2009, methinks.
Good news! It’s a passive power. The moment you (we) stop stop watching, they lose ratings, they lose influence.
The Internet has purposely filled that vacuum though. The only thing that hasn’t changed is that understanding the government requires actual research and effort.
My honest guess is that as the Media desperately puts more useless stories on the air to boost ratings (“because the people watch it, ya know!”), people will just simply accept that CNN shows titties, the table in the back at Borders (and Fox News) is for extremist opinion, and the Internet is for scouring for government utilities and resources (govtrack.us)
And threaten them, too! It’s very cathartic.
Svensker
Sadly, no. I’ve heard similar things from well-educated old-line Dem NY Jews.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
No, from my observance, there’s a strong sub-population in the Jewish community where their citizenship in Israel is their primary hobby. It isn’t right-wing or fundamentalist or anything.
Some Jews are “meh” about it, and the other Jews see Israel as extensions of themselves.
The stupid thing about this, is Jews wouldn’t go off like this unless someone had made the conscious effort to smear Obama. It’s not an African race thing. After all, Jews know what it’s like to be put-down and lynched.
Jen
Second hopeful copout: Maybe they live in solidly red or blue states….?

“We call that ‘pintele Yid'”

This is rather ominous and disturbing, only more so because I can actually see it happening.
And then John Cole will write something along the lines of, “Jesus, I know I spent the entire Spring trashing Obama, but that shouldn’t have left anybody with the impression that I was for Romney!” I mean, obviously John ridicules Romney plenty, but somehow those posts won’t stand out in people’s minds as much as the Obama snark-a-thon.

apparently, Hillary has a poor rating in the “trustworthy” column.
bonus? Hillary talks about “trust” all the damn time. She might as well be handing out pre-filled ballots for Obama.
This campaign appears to be solidified. Anyone paying attention and not invested takes a do-nothing Obama over an erratic Clinton. I dunno if that’ll be enough to push Obama over, but I’m liking the nationals.
This is all fucked because this is the primaries. If this were Obama vs. Hillary in the general, Obama would crush her. But since this is intraparty, apparently the AOL voters just show up to prove they remember that some guy name Clinton used to be preznit once.
Sigh… This primary is going to give me sufficient reason to feel superior to average Americans, isn’t it?
ThymeZone
Yes, without doubt, but the larger thing here is, this is typical of knee-jerk bigoted thinking, wherever it exists, no matter the demographic, or the origin. There is plenty of stupidity out there, it comes in all flavors and packages.
The danger is that we have a political system now that is adept at finding, and exploiting, that kind of nonsense. I have called it Rovian politics, but it has become so common, we can’t just talk about it in those terms any more. It’s dirty, negative politics, and it is everywhere you look.
The Clintons, who have suffered greatly at the hands of the dirty players, are now …. dirty players, par excellence. I think they can even turn Obama into another dirty player. The GOP is all dirty players, all the time.
So, that’s what they are, the politicians. The question is, what are we? Are we just the rubes? Or are we going to reject this bullshit?
Up to now, there has been a tendency to think that somebody else is going to provide the leadership. Why doesn’t congress ……whatever? Why doesn’t the media ….. whatever? Why won’t the blogowners ….. whatever?
We’re on our own. It’s up to us. None of them are going to save us from ourselves.

Good news: All functioning systems, by defintion, adapt and compensate for changed environmental variables.
Therefore, if the stupid-yet-watching people aren’t capable of picking up on this, then the system in general is broken, then we’ve got much bigger problems.
Like, we’re about to consider Zaire our economic rivals. That kind of problem.
tl;dr: Give it time. All proper adjustments require ample time.

I don’t disagree with the concept of a self correcting system, but you’re putting an awful lot of weight on the word “functional” there. a big assumption to make, I think.
Dreggas
What I find almost amusing is watching myself and anyone who ever liked the Clintons and defended them having to re-evaluate our positions in light of new information and realizing that maybe there was some truth, ok a lot of truth, to the “Slick Willie” meme.
Add into that watching the Clintons and their Hillbot supporters come out with “If you call the Clintons out for lying you are spewing right wing talking points” for any and all challenges to the fact that they are, by nature, lying their asses off.
They’re acting just like bushies who say any attempt to call out bush means you suffer from BDS. They stared into the abyss and the abyss stared into them. Just makes me realize they weren’t really that good for the dems after all and they were and always have been about themselves.
Of course this has everyone at the Great Orange Satan in a tizzy, myself included. It’s like the 04 election all over again. Just substitute clinton in bush’s place.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
It’s a definition. An absolute. It’s either there or not. We’re either “functional” and gonna make it, or “not functional” and were about to get our asses handed to us in denominations of Pesos.
No need to hedge words when you’re honest and actually know what the words mean. #43 has a problem with the latter, HRC a problem with the former.

Ouch, does this guy really want tread out on this crumbling slope? Given, as Peter Johnson so clumsily and pathetically demonstrated in a previous thread, the accusation of harboring an -ism is the primary weapon of the Israel lobby (generally a la the closing scene of Invasion of the Body Snatchers). This guy is working hard to hone a second edge on that sword and I don’t think he’s gonna like the next backswing very much.
Shortsighted doesn’t cover it. Whoa. Dumb dumb dumb. (Or just desserts. Depends on the angle of the light on it. Giving how much browbeating has been ongoing for so long, perhaps more of the latter. PJ made me realize just how much Israel lobby fatigue I’m feeling. Moral high ground? What’s that?)

I don’t really think they’re the principal nutcases with the Israel lobby, but their successors worship survivors like cult gods it seems.

You frequently hear “My second cousin once-removed survived the Holocaust, and it haunts me! So how dare you insinuate Israel must maintain human rights standards!”

I saw Hillary speak after her Senate win. Her volunteer minions were of the fawning, scary sort that you’d expect to see at a revival meeting of Stockholm syndrome sufferers. They did not seem to be the type to take criticism rationally. So this is no surprise. They are some authoritarian subset over on the left, or something. I didn’t feel safe sticking around to analyze it beyond a few minutes watching how Hillary handled them, which was with a Jim Jones kind of skill. I’ll give her credit for her prowess at that (I wouldn’t want to be in the same zip code with them, let alone distribute one-armed hugs), but that just made it scarier.
The senate is a good place for Hillary. I also think she’d make an excellent VP, so I’m praying (well, I’m an atheist, how far is that going to go?) for Obama/Hillary or Edwards/Hillary. Either one would be great in my view. Senators have very little power as individuals unless they are smart and then they have a tiny bit. It’s a good place for a smart person with ambition. Keeps them productive, without letting them become dictator. As to VP, what do you want in a VP? You want someone sharp as a whip, who’s been paying obsessive attention to events, like forever, and should the shit utterly smash into the fan, wouldn’t blink an eye while stepping in to take over. I have total faith that she can do that. I think her temperament and flat diction would serve well in a crisis. Odds are she’d never move up, just take over Cheney’s office from which she’ll give the 27% castration nightmares for 8 years. Whoo hoo! Sounds like a win-win to me.
