Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Obama wins big in SC.’

*** Update ***

If I were a campaign manager, I would make damned sure my guy speaks before Obama. Edwards looks like shit after listening to Obama’s speech, and Edwards is not a bad public speaker.

*** Update ***

This may be the dumbest post ever to be created in the history of blogging. Yes, Erick, the party running a black man is the hotbed of racism.

27% lead with 74% of the vote in according to C-SPAN. May be record turnout for Democrats, and it sounds like lots of young voters are stepping up. That in itself is great news.

In a way, it seems like this is the old Democratic establishment (Hillary) versus the new Democratic establishment (Obama).

I like that. In the mid 90’s, I quit the Democratic party because of Bill Clinton. If they can purge the Clintons I may have reason to join again.

    HAHA OH WOW:

Clinton campaign strategists denied any intentional effort to stir the racial debate. But they said they believe the fallout has had the effect of branding Obama as “the black candidate,” a tag that could hurt him outside the South.

I think we can officially rule out a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket.

Independents understand that the battles of the 90’s will have to be refought before anything new gets done. It’s called choosing a president at a convention. It is the system we have. I prefer having someone with delgates using those votes (that the delegates represent) to wedge his policies into the party. Otherwise we have the ‘one’ pushing his/her policies down our throats.

You must be a new one to this process. Or perhaps you only follow memeorandum or Cap Ed. I can’t believe I’m explaining this to someone here in the 21st Century.

Obama. IMO, he is what the Democrats need to clear out the old politics of the past. I am not saying he is the next savior, but rather that I believe there is a better chance for a new direction in politics with Obama then there is with HillBilly.

Everytime I watch Obama, I get chills. Hillary and Obama aren’t miles apart policy-wise, however Obama inspires me and makes me cast aside my cynical political eye and believe.

I think our nation needs that. Partisanship is fine, however I’m so sick of the name calling, the demonizing of the other side, the “Rush Limbaugh”-ing of politics; where the only argument that needs to be made, in fact the only argument a lot of people CAN make, is to call someone a liberal or wingnut. I think Obama can defuse that, Hillary will only inflame it.

It would also be nice for once in recent memory to cast a vote for someone I want to vote for rather than the lesser of two evils.

Here’s something interesting for those of you who think Bill hurts Hillary:

Nearly six-in-ten voters said Bill Clinton was either a “very” or “somewhat” important factor in their vote and, among that group, Obama won 48 percent to 37 percent. Among the 40 percent of voters who said Bill Clinton was not an important factor or not at all a factor, Obama lapped the field — taking 62 percent to 25 percent for Edwards and 13 percent for Hillary Clinton.

Now, to be clear: I don’t want a de facto Clinton third term. And John and a lot of others here don’t either. But it’s silly to mistake our own preferences for those of the rest of the country.

Every poll shows that Bill helps Hillary.

I am enjoying learning about puppies. I’ve never had more than one—one I can deal with. But these pups have been an education for me.

I raised Shelties when I was a kid. Loved the little furballs.

More of a cat person now. Dogs are a little high maintenance for me, they need a lot of attention and I just don’t have a lot of time for them. I like dogs, and they like me, but I don’t think I’m a good candidate for one right now. However I know a professional dog trainer and she knows everybody around here with dogs. I can see if she has any advice for you on placing the sweet pooches.

    Good luck.

I think the Edwards AG rumor is from a column Robert Novak wrote, and I don’t even know that Novak was saying that’s what Edwards wanted. I think it was Novak talking out of his nether hole, speculating on what Edwards *really* wanted because he couldn’t possibly believe in what he was saying.

The Edwards AG rumor is just chum in the water. Edwards has a slim shot at the nomination — getting slimmer by the day — but he’s going to the convention and *then* he’ll figure out what he wants, if and when his chances of getting the nomination go from slim to none.

If I had put this much work into running for President, I’d take whatever shot I had. And yet people keep trying to game him…

Still like to think of Edwards as a player past the primaries. But I don’t think as VP. As pointed out recently on the Rachel Maddow show, it makes sense to go with a military man for #2 if running against McCain. Think Webb.

Of course, they’ll come at any Demo candidate with the most vile shit they can think of. However, I think (rather hope) that shit will stick less to a “knight in shining armor” than to the same ol’ same ol’.

I’ve got to believe (or I want to believe) that the “liberal, socialist” bullshit is insignificant to a message of unity and change. Especially from an orator as gifted as Obama.

NAFTA killed it for me with Clinton. IMO, there is no such thing as ‘free trade’. It is a catchall phrase that is supposed to sound good but in reality it unevenly pits our workers against what is little more than slave labor in other countries (like China). There is no leveling of the playing field, and we lose.

There will always be blue collar workers, and our nation was built by them. But if there are no jobs for them, you can bet that sooner or later there will be hell to pay for it.

Americans know that we have been going in the wrong direction for far too long. We want change, drastic change. Some argue that we do not know what we will get in an Obama presidency, but I counter that with the fact that I can damn well guess what we WILL get out of a Clinton presidency.

I will pass on that nightmare. Also, hearing “Clinton, Clinton, Clinton” in the news and online 24/7/365 x8 would be pure hell. Her presidency would only feed the right wing hate machine.

Obama throws the right a curveball. In reading right wing sites, I see a lot of confusion about him. The worst thing they can come up with is trying to disparage him using his middle name. Over at RedState, one regular there said that they will not be able to use the tactics they did on Kerry and that Obama’s record (or lack of) actually may help insulate him from the usual attacks.

Some republicans actually like Obama, and are not afraid to say so. That in itself says a lot. Many others prefer Hillary, but only because they feel that she will help to fire up their base and improve republican turnout.

If Obama gets the nod, I really believe that he stands a good chance of winning it all. I would not cry about that. Dodd/Gore were my guys, but Obama is a good choice too.

Forget about thick skin; Obama’s going to need Kevlar grafts. Pay attention to the form and sources of the attacks.

I read the news today, oh boy

    Disabled spy satellite threatens Earth

WASHINGTON – A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and could hit the Earth in late February or early March, government officials said Saturday

The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret. It was not clear how long ago the satellite lost power, or under what circumstances.

A cosmic metaphor for the Bush Administration, a deus ex machina if there ever was one. Here’s hoping it lands on the Pentagon.

Pretty speeches are a dime dozen. We are in the era of Marketing bullshit. It’s the action that tells.

Odd, isn’t it, then that some of the most stirring speeches have been associated with people whose actions were pivotal moments in World history. Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address. FDR’s reaction to the Depression and to Pearl Harbor. Churchill’s rallying of the British people during World War II. JFK in Berlin.

By contrast, we have had terse speakers like Cheney and Rumsfeld bumble from disaster to disaster, shredding the Constitution as they go. And of course, there is the Deciderer himself, Dubya with his mangled rhetoric matching the baleful stupidity of his administration.

Added to this, we have Hillary riding unsteadily on Day One, the Experience Donkey, promising action. But apart from her admirable record in the Senate, what “actions” has she been responsible for? Her “years of experience” amount to little more than 35 years of back seat driving.

I really like the fact that Caroline Kennedy has stepped up and endorsed Obama. She is about as reclusive and neutral of a person can be in the world of politics. Nobody is going to be able to shoot a hole in her endorsement, though I am sure some lowlifes will try anyway. Caroline is a quiet and graceful person, and it says a lot that she has stepped up and said what she did about Obama. I think the last person she endorsed for president was Teddy in 1980.

I worry that Obama may just be a flash in the pan in regards to the rest of the primary wars. We have not heard the last of Clinton, and her latest move to try and force the seating of the Michigan and Florida delegates only shows that she is getting desperate. I find it interesting that HillBilly did not remove her name from the ballots in those states, and now she is saying that their delegates need to be counted (for her).

Same with the slick bit about Obama placing ads in Florida and that he is breaking the agreement not to campaign there. He did a nationwide ad buy, and since Florida and Michigan are part of the USA then the ads are going to run there anyway. Nice twist by Clinton though.

Bill’s parting shot dismissing SC as essentially inconsequential and his saying Jesse Jackson won SC too was pretty stupid and sounded almost racist in tone, IMO. If anyone wants to know how HillBilly will treat people who do not agree with her, look at her grace in losing SC. She left the state before the primary was over. She gave up and quit. Her ‘concession speech’ was nothing of the sort. Just more of the same ol’ pimping of her ass.

Such grace. Not. I would not vote for her if my life depended on it. At one time I excused her as I felt sorry for all of the attacks against her by the right. I even did the same for Bill, even feeling sorry for him and understanding why he lied about what he did. No more. Not after the raw display of power grabbing that is going on.

No third term. End the Clinton/Bush dynasty now and forever.
