Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Come on, man.

Second rate reporter says what?

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

This blog will pay for itself.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Bark louder, little dog.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Let there be snark.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

My bet is that the Clintons attack Obama for wearing dark suits. Because dark suits are code for dark skin, which is an explicit appeal to black nationalism. Obviously, right?

Okay, TalkLeft is offering up some weak stuff. I posted this there, but I expect it to disappear any minute now. We shall see if cutting and pasting Rasmussen poll results will be considered “trolling”.

Their premise is that the DNC is going to cost Democrats Florida in the general election.

So I write this, after checking out this Rasmussen poll. I don’t, for the record, believe that you can predict a November election based on polls nine months ahead of time, if it’s going to be your argument that they predict anything, you might want to look at more than one poll in one state.

In this Rasmussen poll of Florida, McCain beats Obama by more than he beats Hillary. So the difference between Obama and Hillary in Florida is Red v. Red.

Funny, they also polled some other states Feb. 17-18:

    Rasmussen in
Minnesota: McCain 47, Clinton 42; McCain 38, Obama 53. Hillary (Red) v. Obama (Blue)

    Wisconsin: McCain 49, Clinton 42; McCain 42, Obama 52. Red v. Blue

    Pennsylvania: McCain 44, Clinton 42; McCain 39, Obama 49. Red v. Blue

    Oregon: McCain 45, Clinton 42; McCain 40, Obama 49. Red v. Blue

Combined electoral votes of MN, WI, PA, and OR: 48 of the 270 needed to win.

I heard a rumor that during the 1990’s, when all the good things happened, Barack Obama was not even president!

If true, this is devastating to his campaign.

In a way, these attacks are good for Obama. It gives him a chance to respond to complete silliness and gives us a chance to see how he does so. In the same way that the way Clinton is running her campaign is costing her voters now, the way that Obama deals with this could win him some.

Their premise is that the DNC is going to cost Democrats Florida in the general election.

Wait, Florida is one of those Red States that never votes for a Democrat anyway. But it is also a state with a high latino and elderly population, groups that are notoriously disenfranchised in the general election. Does this mean Florida’s delegates are second class citizens and should be deported or are these the delegates that are the only ones that count? I’m confused.

And let me tell you something — for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it’s made me proud.”

There was another TalkLeft article where they were contemplating Obama getting routed a la McGovern and they whipped out McGovern’s primary state wins and compared them to Obama’s as “evidence.”

Nevermind McGovern won California and NY. McGovern was also completly undermined by his VP who first anonymously slandered him then withdrew from the race when people found out he’d suffered from depression.

I think the anti-Obama attacks fall into two camps so far.

    1. Obama is secretly a Muslim/Communist/Socialist/Racist/Mysognist/etc and has managed to fool everyone else.

    2. Obama is all talk and no substance, or as I like to think of it, trying to convince you that Obama is actually Wayne Brady.

Interesting things are happening. Remember that the PPP was the party that the US has been supporting. At least in the National Assembly elections it seems that the PPP is winning in the NWFP which is one of the provinces which borders Afghanistan and is home to the Pashtuns. Which means they will be representing the Pashtuns. Given that these guys voted for the PPP over the MMA they are not pro-Taliban. On the other hand they are definitely not pro-US. So will the PPP represent its electorate, even when the wishes of its electorate are in conflict with the wishes of its “foreign friend?” I am sure Samantha Powers has the answer.

“Not necessarily. Let’s look at this other box, the one we use as a family mail computer. It’s got the same decorations, right? But by changing the window manager on this one” — demi switches to twm — “I can get rid of those. Now, all the windows are still there, it’s just the chrome that’s changed. Two rants:

    1) All these liberal bloggers yukking it up about Clinton “discovering” the delegate selection process in Texas. I don’t care what one anonymous staffer in one story says, there’s no way in hell the Clinton campaign just realized how the process works. What they realized is that Obama’s groundswell of support may eclipse the support they’ve already built up in Texas, and that thanks to the delegate selection process their support among Hispanics won’t count for enough. So now they’re trying to game expectations, while-somewhat insidiously I think-trying to convince people that Texas Hispanics are getting ripped off by the delegate selection process.

    2) What the heck is the deal with this Obama “plagiarism” nonsense? How the heck is this a story? The TWO Talk Left posts about it are both closed for comments, having gotten over 200 comments for each post. How is there that much to say about it?? The only thing that proves to me is that commentators on liberal blogs can be just a stupid as commentators on conservative blogs.

Sad to say this, but historically here in Texas, the white population has always tried to pit the black and latino populations against each other. You see it most strikingly in the immigration debate. Also, since the primaries are open, there will probably be a lot of Republicans voting in the Democratic primary. I can only hope that they are too stupid to figure out the system here. They’ll vote in the primary, go home and congratulate themselves, and then the Dems will go back for the caucuses.

I know some say that Hillary Clinton doesn’t have much of a chance, but they very same people also condemned the Iraq troop surge as never going to be able to work and look. Ok, more from the Hillaryis44.org site (I just noticed it was .org, not .com. Damn you .!):

Ok Drudge is hitting it to Bambi’s campaign today. He is leading with huge, black letters a quote by Michelle Obama, ‘For the first time in my life, I’m really proud of my country’
    http://www.drudgereport.com
REad the comments, wow, they are bad
Repubs will run with this tomorrow and tonight on talk shows
    REad Poderhertz’s comments
    She Said What?
    John Podhoretz – 02.18.2008 – 17:27
    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/jpodhoretz/2541

Michelle Obama today said that “for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction.”

Really proud of her country for the first time? Michelle Obama is 44 years old. She has been an adult since 1982. Can it really be there has not been a moment during that time when she felt proud of her country? Forget matters like the victory in the Cold War…

Podhertz?! Drudge?! This stuff is pure gold!

You know, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear that the Hillaryis44 site was run by our old friends from Scrutator, or perhaps by the lunatics from B4B/B4H. Has anybody seen PsychO recently?

I know, it just seems so …weird over there. The other day, one person asked what ‘GLBT’ meant, another explained what it was. A few people identified themselves as gay, bi or whatever, and someone asks that if one person was a lesbian there, could they ‘watch’ sometime. It was just creepy to read this on a presidential political blog. They toss gay stuff, racism and all kinds of napalm around, and it just looks like a train wreck there. Kind of like watching brain damaged kids juggling nitroglycerin.

But some of them have posted pics of themselves at Hillary events, and others recognize them. One was on TV during coverage of a Hillary event, and they said that a friend there saw them. If it is a spoof site, they are damn good.

If it is for real, O. M. G.

Hillary Clinton. The Clinton that didn’t stain Lewinsky’s blue dress!

    That’s got real potential.

You should experiment with that line. Can you use it on Vince Foster, too?

So, anyone want to bet the attack/dismissal of Obama wins tomorrow/today (depending on where you are) will be that Wisconsin and Hawaii are solidly blue so they don’t count, because they’d never vote for a Republican? Or Hawaii will be dismissed because Obama is something of a favorite son?

If only you were rational, you would follow the thrust of your mind, instead of being the helpless recipient of marketing messages.

“But you know in the end, don’t vote your fears. I’m stealing this line from my buddy (Massachusetts Gov.) Deval Patrick who stole a whole bunch of lines from me when he ran for the governorship, but it’s the right one, don’t vote your fears, vote your aspirations. Vote what you believe.”

Royston, it is hard to call it plagiarism when he gives credit, eh? ;)

    Great catch!

    More insanity from Hillaryis44:

On Fox over the weekend Martha McCallum was talking about how McCain has started hitting Obama. To my surprise, she cautioned against that. She said, “People don’t like it when someone talks bad about Obama. A lot of people!” So f’ing what? If the guy isn’t tough enough to stand up to the truth in a campaign, how can he stand up to the problems this country faces both locally and abroad?

Picked up by FOX news now.

Heres the Fox story on the plagerism:
    youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/02/18/clinton-obama-camp-exchange-war-of-just-words/

Sounds to me Michelle has spent her entire adult life being unpatriotic!! She wasn’t proud when we ousted the Iraqis from Kuwait, saved the Kosovo refugees from sure extermination at the hands of the Serbs, saw the cold war lead to the defeat of the Soviet Union and free Eastern Europe from Communists oppression and let’s not forget Geraldine Ferarro the first woman on a major party presidential ticket. The list goes on and on….. Seems to me the only things she considers being important enough to be proud of concern only her husband and herself. Talk about an ego and if I hear Chris matthews say she reminds me so much of Jackie Kennedy once more I will scream. Jackie was always a class act and never pretended to be anything other than what she was.

I was reading the Drudge blogs…my oh my. THIS one won’t go away from the right AT ALL. Lot’s of “I would have voted for you” “I am now going to work against you”

    and probably the most prophetic…..
“Just wait until the Obama supporters start to riot. Don’t be suprised.” (sic)

divabunny, the rightwing press is running away with that Michelle Obama remark. You will hear it tomorrow on every rightwing talk show. You will hear it tonight on Hannity and on Reilly. That was a real stupid remark for her to make and is one that can easily be communicated to people and is also very easy to understand. The Republicans will paint them as Harvard-educated, America-hating lefties. This is Kerry all over again. Obama and Michelle are gifts that keep on giving.

And they go on and on with so much of what I would consider right wing crap that I am having a hard time believing that this is a real Hillary site. They have her picture all over, asking for donations ($100 gets you a pink t-shirt and a button!), so I guess it should be real.

    It really is surreal though.

I’ve liked Obama all along. He seems like an honest and caring person. However, the constant attacks from his supporters leave me confused. I woke up this morning realizing Obama isn’t change, he’s just more of the same old same old. I’ll still vote for him if he wins the nomination because he is still a better choice than McCain. But I won’t vote for him with a smile on my face.

This link was posted earlier but deserves a re-look.

Obama is telling the truth about his speechifying relationship with Patrick. From December:

“But you know in the end, don’t vote your fears. I’m stealing this line from my buddy (Massachusetts Gov.) Deval Patrick who stole a whole bunch of lines from me when he ran for the governorship, but it’s the right one, don’t vote your fears, vote your aspirations. Vote what you believe.”

I’m about an inch away from deciding to vote for John McCain before I would vote for Clinton in November.

I am going to try to hit my $2300 contribution limit to the Obama campaign before March 4.

I am really, really sick of this shit.

This msy be the end of his campaign. We’ve all been waiting around for him to screw up, and this is it. This is worse than Gary Hart getting caught on the monkey business.

Demi, everyone knows that Foster was dead by the time that Lewinsky’s dress was stained.

More importantly, Vista is awful. I’m an old guy who just wants to turn on the computer and do things, not search for “dll” files. I look longingly at everyone around me who switched to Macs. I just put 1200 bucks worth of music software and peripherals on my Vista computer and they all just disappeared. They’re there somewhere in the computer but that can’t be found to run.

Kinda OT, but since it’s an open thread, I thought I’d share this marvelous offering of neo-Confederate revisionism (from RedState, naturally).

    (h/t Lawyers, Guns & Money

I especially liked “haystack”‘s aside about how the Confederacy really wasn’t all that bad once one gets “beyond the darkness of slavery“. And of course, barring that minor point, it was a veritable Utopia of civic and social virtue. Except, (I kid you not) for the Democrats.

That Red State thing is beyond pathetic. I made it halfway through the first paragraph:

Imagine, for just a moment, Barack Obama wearing the red cloak of the Klan’s “Imperial Wizard” by night only to appear BY DAY to swear to represent the little people and insist on a change long overdue to all the citizens he presumes to represent. Head exploding yet?

From your awful writing and preposterous hypothesis? Yes.

Sadly, this is merely evidence of a pattern of plagiarism (the new kind, where the victim suggests the perpetrator do so).

Oops, Taps forgot to mention Obama attributed the quote. How much of a hack must one be to truncate quotes from their own website? And what kind of campaign would use Tapper and Byron York to make their argument?
