Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

We’re not going back!

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Long tribute to Buckley at Red State that I found pretty amusing, because if Buckley had said some of the things in the comments section at Red State that he had said publicly (like, for example, Bush should resign he is such a failure, or that the Iraq War was a failure, or that the Bush White House was criminal in regards to the Plame affair), Moe Lane would have banned him without giving it a second thought.

At any rate, now that conservatism really is dead, we need a new name for the remnants. Freeperism was suggested. Wingnuttism?

    I know, that’s not a new one.

Some have known for quite a while a maggot was eating its way through Buckley’s magnum opus leaving only the dustjacket intact. It ought to be named after the President who did so much to encourage the maggot to emerge far enough for many to finally see it for what it was.

This too, but a bit too long. Absolutely not “Bushism” or its variants; he’s already being read out of the club in preparation for 2008 going badly. Atrios (if he originated the idea) got it right. Conservatism is whatever conservatives say it is at the time. Conservatism can never fail, it can only be failed by its followers- by not being conservative enough. The ideology is flawless. Flaws are the result of imperfect understanding by individuals- noncapitalist roaders as it were, who require intensive self-examination and re-education to allow reintegration into the good graces of the whole.

It was originally called “individualism” if I remember correctly, before the Goldwaterites popularized the term “Conservative.”

I think the important thing to remember is that the whole thing, from its inception after WWII, was a scam, a marketing tool more than a coherent worldview. It seems to me that the worldview and its intellectual basis was just furniture to be rearranged as necessary to attract and hold converts.

NYT said this about Buckley when Goldwater died:

William F. Buckley Jr., founder of The National Review and probably the pre-eminent political philosopher of their shared movement, said recently of Goldwater: “He was the primary political figure in the 60’s. Around him flowered a number of ideas that galvanized in the 80’s.” Buckley hailed Goldwater for his ability to put ideas simply and effectively, saying: “He was a crystallizer. He probably believed that Edmund Burke was correct when he said there were no good new ideas. His notion was to revitalize what he considered to be the operating principles of this nation before it was seduced by the idea of the state as a substitute for the individual in the area of social investment.”

The whole schtick of the so-called conservative moment was to complicate good old fashioned populism, to pose the power-seekers as crusaders against government and for the little guy.

Total crock of shit from the get-go.

I left out of my previous post the comment that one has to sort of overlook the fact that Goldwater got a shockingly low vote total (38%) in his presidential bid in 1964. At that point he became a footnote to the history of Johnson’s war and the civil rights movement.

That phase dissolved into Nixon’s era of Peace With Honor, which exterminated very large numbers of people and split the country in a wave of divisiveness from which it has not yet recovered.

But to call Goldwater the big deal of the 60’s is just preposterous. Only an ego the size of Buckley’s could come up with a malapropism that grotesque.

The problem with “Authoritarianism” is that it isn’t nearly specific enough (time/place wise). 21st Century American Authoritarianism isn’t quite catchy enough. “Bushkkake” is a little, um, NSFW for general usage.

And “Neoteny” is an insult to the completely respectable Proteus Anguinus (the Human Fish need not concern itself with mere political labels).

Conservatism started to unravel when it became, at the same time, for “small government” in terms of services to citizens, but for big government in terms of defense, military spending, and enforcement of moral/religious authority. It was an unstable amalgam of convenience, which never had a chance of holding together a long term and successful coalition. The intellectual problems and cognitive dissonance of it all made it too weak.

The most obvious sign of its demise right now is the pending nomiation of a non-conservative to the top position in the GOP. The “conservatives” really don’t like McCain. He isn’t one of them, and we may be seeing the last “conservative” in that slot for a while.

It’s everything that’s despicable about human behavior wrapped up into one festering turd of a package. Buckley put polysyllabic words in front of it but it was really just an excuse to do what felt good and was dumb and easy. Lazy.

I love how they gloss over Buckley’s comments as noted here. One commenter at Redstate discovered that Buckley was for marijuana law reforms. He said that he would need to reconsider his stance on it in light of this discovery. What an idiot.

Reagan and Buckley would have been blammed if they posted at Redstate under any other name. We all know that. Selective memory seems to be a common malady on the right. The Republican party is a sad parody of what they once were. The sad thing is that the Democrats are the lesser evil instead of the better party.

If Obama wins, I hope the party dynamic changes. More to hope for, but anything is better than the status quo.
