This is impressive, even for the Confederate Yankee. In fact, this is so impressive I am hoping the Poorman comes up with a whole new category for his annual awards (and for some reason I can not find last year’s winners/losers). At any rate, the rundown:

First, he accuses Anderson Cooper of “making things up” in regards to a Rev. Wright speech, without a shred of evidence that he is in fact, you know, “making things up.”

Then he asks his readers to prove Cooper is making things up, because, as we have noted, he doesn’t have a shred of evidence to back up his claim.

His readers, dedicated souls that they are, inform him that Anderson Cooper didn’t make any claims, it was Roland Martin posting at the AC360 blog. The Yankee changes the name in the title, and charges forward.

Then his readers cough up the video in which all of the things Martin claimed are actually said by Rev. Wright are, you know, actually said. He then condemns Roland Martin FOR BEING RIGHT ALL ALONG:

Wright does indeed invoke Peck, and in particular, where Peck invokes the specific Malcolm X speech cited above.

In short, Martin is being duplicitous when he claims that Wright was citing Peck, he was instead citing Malcom X through Peck.

You wouldn’t get that from Martin’s blog entry, but then, I don’t think you were supposed to

Who needs the mainstream media when you have citizen journalists, I say.

Obama’s speech has had exactly the desired effect.

For those people who were willing and able to take the speech at face value, as a call to a higher level of discourse on a very inflammatory subject, the call worked, and the discourse level will be raised. And Obama, and those people, take the high ground.

For those people who live in the world of petty minutiae as a deflection from reality, who would rather sit around and talk about whether somebody really loved his grandmother, or wears a lapel pin, than talk about things that really matter in the country, the speech has stirred them up to do what they do best: Bark like hyenas and make goddammed fools of themselves.

Behold, the hyenas. Let them shriek until November. I welcome their asshattery, it illuminates what this contest is really about.

This sort of tactic is used ALL THE TIME by righty bloggers. They make claims without any proof, then say prove me wrong.

The worst part is they don’t have the slightest idea how idiotic this line of reasoning. These are the same people who mock the NYTimes and 60 Minutes as journalistic jokes.

It’s truly and utter ridiculous how stupid some of these people are.

I just read Roland’s post and was quite relieved by it.
It’s a shame though that while Obama does want to raise the level of our political discourse, the people he is up against have no interest in discourse, as has been pointed out here. That “prove me wrong” tactic is maddening.

The best of them, like CY, have no idea how idiotic that line of reasoning is. The worst of them use it as a propaganda tool. You can’t prove a negative, so you can’t prove them wrong — as CY shows in this very post.

The only way to win that game is to not play by their rules. If you take them seriously, you play by their rules.

In an election with such an enthusiasm gap, where the Republican nominee is so widely disrespected by his party’s base, that’s just fine.

Even if ordinary, sane people see right through this – as they appear to be doing in increasing numbers – the scary-black-man theme is something that can get the Republicans base (real Americans, the ones who George Allen was always talking about) to hold their nose just to keep the overly-pigmented fella out of the Oval Office.

I just read the Malcolm X speech CY linked to, and have come to the following conclusions:

    1) Peck really did talk about America’s violence leading to more violence. There’s a link in the first comment.

    2) The words in Wright’s speech are either Wright’s or Peck’s. The only phrase attributable to Malcolm X is “America’s chickens are coming home to roost”, and I don’t see anything disingenuous or scary about Wright’s inclusion of it. Unless you’re scared of Malcolm X, that is.

    3) CY is scared of Malcolm X. I don’t know why, the guy’s dead. Maybe it’s because Malcolm X was an angry man for most of his life – fairly understandable, considering all the shit America did to people of color during his lifetime (and which I, a white American, will unhesitantly damn America for). Angry or not, he made several valid criticisms of the U.S. government in his so-called “Chickens come home to roost speech”. It appears that CY is hinting, in a not-so-subtle way, that I should be scared or wary of Wright because he has alluded to Malcolm X. Nonsense.

    4) People flying the Confederate flag shouldn’t be talking about race, and nobody with a proper head on their shoulders should pay any attention.

I especially liked this quote myself.

I will be more than happy to apologize if wrong, but Martin has not “shown his work,” and until he back his claim with a direct quote, and can prove that Wright was citing Pecks’ lesser known comment instead of X’s infamous speech, then I have no reason to trust him.

Ah, the gold standard for veracity. If TIDOS doesn’t trust him, how can any of us lesser beings be expected to take facts at face value?

The plot thickens relative to the so-called passport scandal. This from Bill Gertz in today’s WaTimes:

The State Department investigation of improper computer access to passport records of three presidential candidates is focusing on one remaining employee — a contract worker with a company headed by an adviser to the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama.

Maybe this explains why the Obama camp was so anxious to blame Bush Friday night when the story broke. Is it possible that they were trying to obscure their own interests in Hillary, as well as McCain? Sure looks possible.

CY is scared of Malcolm X.

Malcolm X is, in my opinion, one of the great Americans. Started off as a crook, reformed himself in prison, became a prominent black leader who held some racist views, saw the error of those ways and evolved as a leader even further.

It’s the quintessential American story. CY’s post implies there’s something wrong with quoting Malcolm X. I’d be proud to do so. His autobiography should be required high school reading.

That’s fresh. Lemme see now; the economy is circling the drain, a war that was supposed to take six weeks to six months has now lasted longer than World War II, the ceiling on the national debt has been raised five times, the debt is now approaching nine and one-half trillion dollars and we’re solving that little problem by running larger deficits. We’re the only industrialized nation without universal health care, consequently there are thirty-two countries (Including Cuba) which have a lower infant mortality than we do.

Is it me, or does the very term Confederate Yankee seem to roughly translate into Fifth Columnist. What with Yankees being from the north and Confederates being a group of rebels who regularly wanted to kill all the Yankees they could get their hands into.

But, yeah, lets assume for a brief moment that CY didn’t have the razor wit and superior intellect necessary to point out that even the thing Anderson Cooper didn’t say that wasn’t a lie was a devious trick by the media at large. Would he have even posted an article on the story, or would it have fallen on the cutting room floor? I’m just saying, if he couldn’t come out with some giant pants-shitting whine – baseless or otherwise – would he even know the show took place?

does the very term Confederate Yankee seem to roughly translate into Fifth Columnist.

“Confederate Yankees” were called “Copperheads” by their contemporaries, so, yeah, “fifth columnist” is pretty close. “Traitor*” would do, in a pinch.

    Ed

    * Just so some right-whinger doesn’t get in a snit, I’m using the terms and meanings as they were applied during the Civil War. “Copperheads” WERE traitors, probably even greater traitors than the rebels themselves, since they (the copperheads) stayed in the north to cause trouble and advance the Confederate cause, rather than join their ‘brothers in arms’ in combat. In this manner, they’re a lot like our armchair warriors of today: “Let’s you and him fight!” is their motto.

LOL….Poor silly old PaulB, what a fool is he. Stuck with a real loser in Obama, rhymes with Osama, and helps remind all of America where he came from….what a piece of scum is good old Obama, rhymes with Osama.

TenguPhule, what were your ancestors doing in the months leading up to December 7, 1941? Just idle curiosity, shithead.

Yes. Hawaii is indeed a terrorist breeding ground, though I’d bet money you’ve never been there. But you’re right nonetheless.

BTW, YoMama also rhymes with Osama. Does she have one of those “sniz”-hidden nuclear weapons like Hillary in that South Park episode?

Poor silly old PaulB, what a fool is he.

    ROFL… Whatever you say, dear.

I’m so going to enjoy it when your candidate, John “100 years in Iraq and more tax cuts for the wealthy” McCain goes down to a crushing defeat in November. You really should have picked someone who’s joined the 21st Century dear. Ah, well, there’s always 2012.

Oh, and dear heart? “I know you are but what am I” stopped being an effective taunt when I was three years old. You really should improve your shtick if you want to be an effective troll.

Any troll who gets people to respond to him is an effective troll.

Any troll who gets people to respond to him is an effective troll.

And if the response is longer than the troll’s original comment – the troll wins.

Not quite. Any troll who gets people to take him seriously and gets people to try to engage him wins. Personally, I like counter-trolling and getting the troll to play my game, just as Dug Jay did.
