Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Books are my comfort food!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

“Alexa, change the president.”

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

People are weird.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

You think that’s what they’re trying to do? I think they’ve been extraordinarily successful in embarrassing the shit out of the Chinese government. And they’re not going to stop.

Let’s face it, I’m at odds with my own government, but China’s one place that’s worse. It has all of the authoritarianism of communism, the croynism of the Bush administration and unimaginable inequity. That the world is finally calling them on it has been a refreshing surprise.

China, stubborn to the last, won’t change because of it, but they’ll at least have to enjoy the scorn heaped upon them when they are trying to impress the world.

    Treasonous Yankee has a question!

I left a comment over there a bit ago. Nothing inappropriate, just that McCain’s a communist by Yankee’s definition. But he deleted the comment and banned me because I referred to him as “TIDOS-Yankee”. Didn’t like that, I guess.

China, stubborn to the last, won’t change because of it, but they’ll at least have to enjoy the scorn heaped upon them when they are trying to impress the world.

I think it’s great. Anyone who’s been reading the news about China’s preparations for this knows just how much China wants, needs this event to make them look good. They’ve spent billions of dollars just trying to get the pollution under control in Beijing in advance of this (or at least the part of the city where the games will be held).

The IOC gave the summer games to a country that not only executes people for selling drugs, but frequently does so in mobile execution buses specifically outfitted to execute the prisoner in the bus, and immediately harvest organs regardless of the wishes of the deceased’s relatives, is disgusting. Of course, there’s plenty more than that to be disgusted with.

Trying to slime Dems as communists is not exactly a new idea.

Richard Nixon did it in 1950 to Helen Gahan Douglas.

    This seems blogworthy.

NYT reports that DOJ is replacing corporate prosecution with “monitoring” and arranged deals.

Did you know that John Ashcroft was enjoying a $52m deal to do corporate monitoring?

Deferred prosecution agreements, or D.P.A.’s, have become controversial because of a medical supply company’s agreement to pay up to $52 million to the consulting firm of John Ashcroft, the former attorney general, as an outside monitor to avoid criminal prosecution. That agreement has prompted Congressional inquiries and calls for stricter guidelines.

ABC News is reporting that senior members of the Bush Administration approved enhanced interrogation.

So, basically – they have proof that the Executive branch was in favor of torture. I expect the response from the Bush Administration to be:

    “So?”

    And even better:

Let the War Crimes discussion begin!

And of course, the right wing nutjobs are already beginning to dismiss this with “If that’s the plan for an Obama administration, let the healing begin!”

Wow, that didn’t take long. So, if you’re keeping score at home:

Impeaching because of a blow job = vital to the U.S. interest
Prosecuting war crimes = shrill, partisan divisiveness

I don’t see anything going on in ‘Murica these days that couldn’t be fixed by:

1.) Drafting Right Wing warmongering bloggers, pundits, Freepers, Red State and PNAC members who never served in the Military.

2.) Waterboarding the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress on pay-per-view TV to help pay for the war.

3.) Ending Corporate Welfare and reclaiming the cash retroactively back to when Eisenhower left office, and auctioning off the companies who can’t pay on EBay.

4.) Rendering Rush Limbaugh’s fat to increase the National Petroleum reserves.

5.) Using the bodies of Murdoch and the Fox News’ Anchors as clean fill to repair the levees wiped out during Katrina.

6.} Kidnapping and selling Ann Coulter and Michele Malkin to Sudanese tribesmen, reported to have the longest penises ever measured and donating the money to the 9/11 widows Coulter insulted.

7.} Confiscating the 21 BILLION dollars in bonuses awarded Wall Street CEO’s in 2007 to help average Americans losing their homes in the mortgage foreclosure debacle.

8.} Make right wing talk radio hosts read the Constitution and The Bill of Rights out loud to their listeners.

    Every. Single. Fucking. Day.
    Repeat as necessary.

We’d be in great shape in no time.

I have been experimenting with a digital TV converter box to receive over the air broadcasts (I don’t watch enough TV to justify cable or satellite TV).

The dirty little secret? Broadcast digital signals are much more directly focused than old style analog signals. With analog, you might get a snowy or ghost transmission, but still be able to see a watchable picture.

With over the air broadcast digital, if the signal is not strong enough, you get nothing, zip, nada. The big zero.

I’ve gone through two indoor antennas, and while the second (Philips MANT510) is a huge improvement over the first one I bought, there are still some stations that I simply cannot pull in, including all PBS stations. On the semi-positive side, strong broadcast digital signals display a very good picture, and includes stereo sound.

Still, when February 2009 rolls around and analog broadcasting stops, a lot of people will be out of luck, especially if the economic downturn continues and people try to save money by getting rid of their cable service.

NCAA National Champions LSU can’t keep their next big quarterback out of the local press – whether it’s his involvement in a currency counterfeiting ring, his muggings, or his most recent escapade calling an Arab waitress “Osama” when given bad service.

I’m the opinion editor of our local (college) newspaper, so I was tapped to write the column tackling our University’s Perrilloux problem.

    Check it out here.

I don’t know, I’m just a frequent reader who never posts except to ask Tim F. if I could use his old logical fallacies primer to teach my staff what to avoid, and remembered John’s obsession with all things NCAA.

I thought ya’ll might get a kick out of it, so here it is.

PS: John, I thought your mea culpa about your initial support for the War in Iraq was one of the classiest things online that week, and you put everyone assembled by Slate to shame. It says a lot that you’re virtually the only guy who considers the deaths of our troops a terrible thing – and as someone who belongs to a family with three generations of military service, it meant a lot to me personally.

Well, I have a follow-up to my songwriting news last week.

Last week my co-writer and I (Eduard Glumov of Kazakhstan) won First Prize in the Rock/Alt Division of the Great American Song Contest, which was a bit feather in our caps.

Yesterday I was called personally by the Chairperson of the International Songwriting Competition to say that we won the GRAND PRIZE — out of 15,000 entries.

My picture is pretty prominent on the Winners Page

About the TIDOS Yankee link, as I also commented in a thread on the same topic on LGM:
The Cold War isn’t ancient history in a general sense, but in electoral politics it’s close enough. People born after the Berlin Wall fell will be eligible to vote. Rising health care costs are effecting everything, and health care is the least-bad thing about Cuba. After seven years of Republican fear-mongering about decentralized groups of religious fanatics, all but the dumbest voters will get suspicious if Republicans try to pivot toward an enemy that’s almost the opposite.

Please, please, Republicans, go for red-baiting in 2008.
