Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This blog will pay for itself.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The revolution will be supervised.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Charming:

No good can come from the unholy union of Michelle Malkin and Larry Johnson.

Start stocking up on canned goods, bottled water, and batteries (for the radio, Larry Craig supporters). I am so ready for this election to be over.

Hard not to feel superior to people who can’t tell a blastocyst from a human being, who think the earth is 6,000 years old, who think that tax cuts will grow the economy, who thought that there were WMD in Iraq, who think that history will vindicate the trust-fund baby who squandered the hegemony of the greatest power in the world.

Shut up, Crackerstan. The only thing you’ve been to your country is the hole that your betters stick it in when they want to fuck us all.

Charming. Really they go about calling dem/Obama voters elitist and follow that up by calling them snobs?

You know if the country wants to choose yet another president by vapid discourse about snobs and elites and who’s the better bowler rather than discussing the numerous problems currently confronting us, fine. HRC won’t win that kind of general election either. I’ve made my peace with the fact that the GOP will pull out all the shiney shineys that they have the last 8 years. If the voters want to fall for that crap yet again, so be it. Fucking voters will just have to learn the hard way that stupid hurts.

This is one of the more irritating things about Clinton’s attacks on Obama: she will be subjected to precisely these same attacks and she is just as vulnerable. Experienced? McCain can out-experience her. Elitist? McCain can out-regular-guy her. Security at 3:00 a.m.? McCain can out-security her. By buying into these tired memes and by not trying to change or re-frame the debate, she’s playing right into Republican hands.

And that’s why Obama’s beating her, I think, because even though he may still lose to the usual litany of Republican attacks, he is at the very least trying to change this debate in a way that Clinton either can not, or will not, or both.

it’s depressing how utterly fucking stupid our nation’s political discourse is.

One of the signatures of the Obama campaign, one of the hallmarks of its appeal, is that we don’t have to settle for snark and stupidity as the common denominator for discourse.

If you saw Barack last night, you saw that in action.

A sarcastic slogan or image is not discourse. Discourse is discourse. Barack knows how to do discourse. There’s no reason to give this kind of bullshit any quarter at all. The voters are smarter than this, and given the choice between the feckless McCain, and Barack, I am still looking forward to a good old fashioned ass-whipping being put on our Republican friends this fall.

Okay, kids. It’s spine time. Stiffen up. Let’s stop talking like we can’t beat the meanies. First of all, let Obama speak for himself on this topic. Second, let the teams play the game. Let Hillary do her Joe Liberaman imitation. We have the strongest candidate, in Obama, that we’ve seen at this level. Let him do what he does. It’s not time to concede — yet again — to schoolyard politics.

You all might want to watch the morning’s appearances by these candidates in full. Notice that John McCain couldn’t buy an applause line, even as he tried to milk the Demsnob lines for all they were worth.

Josh Marshall, over at Talking Points Memo, had this to say:

With the Wright business and now with this, the more nuanced version of the Clinton line has been that what ‘we’ think is not really the point. It’s what Republicans will do with it in the fall. And that’s a real concern that I definitely have. I won’t deny it. I’ve never thought Obama was a perfect candidate. But as we get deeper into the primary calendar, increasingly so, this ‘what the Republicans will do’ line has become more of a simulacrum, or a license, if you will, to do what Republicans actually do do. That is to say, to grab for political advantage by peddling stereotypes about Democrats and liberals that are really no less offensive than the ones we’re talking about about Americans from small town and rural America.

And seeing Hillary go on about how Obama has contempt for folks in small town America, how he’s elitist, well … no, it’s not because I think she’s either. I never have. But after seeing her hit unfairly with just the same stuff for years, it just encapsulates the last three-plus months of her campaign which I can only describe as a furious descent into nonsense and self-parody. Part of it makes me want to cry. But at this point all I can really do is laugh.

Not like John McCain, son and grandson of four star admirals. The quarters that admirals and their dependents live in, the food they eat and the social circles they travel in are about as elite as it gets. I’m not begrudging them a bit of it either, most of them are damned good at their jobs and they have huge responsibilities. Just saying that someone who grew up under those circumstances knows as little of the life of the average American as it is possible to know and still live in this country.
For those who don’t know me, I was born on a Navy base, grew up in the Navy and served myself.

Instead of ‘snob’ I think the word Malkin wants is ‘uppity,’ no?

Anyway, this is fine and predictable from the GOP and their paid-for pundits. The republicans have been scared to death that the Bitter Majority will finally figure out that they’ve been voting for the party of Tax Cuts for the Rich, and that the Democrats are actually the party of the blue-collar, labor, working class.

For this reason, the GOP has tried to shout down any Democrat who brings up what the GOP calls ‘class warfare.’ Because if the Demcrats finally manage to convince the blue-collars to trust them again (like they did back before McGovern) then the modern GOP will be decimated.

Kerry was painted as a rich elitist because, hey, he was from Massachusetts. Same with Dukakis. And the same would have happened to “Westchester New York” Hillary.

Obama is so scary to the GOP because he has stirred up the class-warfare, Bitter Majority, beast. And if Obama manages to ride the Bitter slogan, to use this incident to both claim the mantle of the working class champion while showing that McCain (and Hillary) don’t understand that bitterness is a fact of most Americans’ lives in 2008, then Obama will have accomplished what so many Democrats have been hoping for: to define the party as the default majority party.

Obama can do it. This incident may finally be the tipping point.

I’m actually in agreement with you, TZ. The main reason we have this sillyness is that our pundit/courtier class is very comfortable with their 6 figure consulting gigs, the vainity of appearing on the teevee, dinner partys with the rich and powerful, etc etc. So for them this is just a wonderful way to live in high school forever, free of any meaningful duties or responsibilities.

I do believe that most voters are not that dumb and that they are ready for an adult conversation about government. Obama, from everything I’ve seen in his responses to these non-scandals, seem to think the same thing. As Josh noted in PaulB’s post:

This has been one of the more comedic aspects of this 72 hours — watching a cavalcade of extremely wealthy pundits, editorialists and political operatives from New York and Washington tell me how rural Americans won’t stand for this.

For years after FDR the Democrats were identified as the party of the working man. They slowly forgot that in the intervening years. By the Nineties we had Bill Clinton signing off on NAFTA. This decade we saw Dems voting for the so-called Bankruptcy Reform Act. Now Congress is considering a bailout bill that does more financially for home builders than it does for distressed home owners. If Democrats are to once again become the party who represents the working class then they need to summon up the courage to legislate for them. Less bad than the Republicans is not good enough.

    Robert Reich’s take on this:

    …

Does Russert really believe he’s doing the nation a service for this parade of spin doctors talking about potential spins and the spin-offs from the words Obama used to state what everyone knows is true? Or is Russert merely in the business of selling TV airtime for a network that doesn’t give a hoot about its supposed commitment to the public interest but wants to up its ratings by pandering to the nation’s ongoing desire for gladiator entertainment instead of real talk about real problems.

We’re heading into the worst economic crisis in a half century or more. Many of the Americans who have been getting nowhere for decades are in even deeper trouble. Large numbers of people in Pennsylvania and across the nation are losing their homes and losing their jobs, and the situation is likely to grow worse. Consumers are at the end of their ropes, fuel and food costs are skyrocketing, they can’t go deeper into debt, they can’t pay their bills. They aren’t buying, which means every business from the auto industry to housing to even giant GE is hurting. Which means they’ll begin laying off more people, and as they do, we will experience an even more dangerous downward spiral.

Bitter? You ain’t seen nothing yet. And as much as people like Russert, Carville, Matalin, Schrum, and Murphy want to divert our attention from what’s really happening; as much as HRC and McCain seek to make political hay out of choices of words that can be spun cynically by the mindless spinners of the old politics; as much as demagogues on the right and left continue to try to channel the cumulative frustrations of Americans into a politics of resentment – all these attempts will, I hope, prove futile. Eighty percent of Americans know the nation is on the wrong track. The old politics, and the old media that feeds it, are irrelevant now.

    Oops:

Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama’s name came up again at the Antoin “Tony” Rezko corruption trial and in a way that earlier filings in the case did not telegraph.

Stuart Levine, the prosecution’s star witness, said he and Obama were at a party Rezko threw at his Wilmette mansion on April 3, 2004, for Nadhmi Auchi, a controversial Iraqi-born billionaire who Rezko was trying to get to invest in a South Loop real-estate development.

Auchi, now a citizen of the United Kingdom, has faced criminal charges in Europe. He also figured in the revocation of Rezko’s bond early this year after attempting to wire him more than $3 million. Upon learning of that attempt, U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve declared Rezko a flight risk and ordered him held in a federal jail in the Loop.

The Rezko party in 2004 was designed to induce Auchi to pour money into the South Loop investment. Obama’s presence at the party was not previously known. At the time, Obama was fresh off a surprise win in the Illinois Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and was riding a crest of national publicity.

Barry claims he never met Auchi.

Nah, I don’t need to see the streets running red with blood (although I wouldn’t complain if I did). I’ll be more than happy to watch the vast majority of liberals, most of independents, and a sizeable chunk of conservatives calmly shuffle up to the voting booths and pull the lever for Obama. A solid 60-40 victory against McCain with coat tails to match will be enough to lay down a healthy dose of STFU. I think the Unity Pony can take us there. But we all knew from the start it was going to be a rough ride.

We need to keep repeating this stuff and maybe the facts will finally get through the haze of nonsense.

The Dem politicians need to remember it first. The dems are just as guilty on making wedge issues the main event of any kind of debate. Thats what made Obama’s words so true; the middle class has been getting screwed by the left and right for so long, that they really don’t know who to trust at this point.

Only for the reality based. For those who recieve their reality through the filter there’s nothing unusual about it. An Interesting Alliance has formed between Clintonites, the Talk Radio Right and the Conservative Elite. These parties and their wingnut footsoldiers form an Axis.

All speak the same talking points and share a similar goal. These days it can be virtually impossible to distinguish a Red State Wingnut from a Clintonite by their respective use of rhetoric when reading the comment boards on the internets (such as here). Since these groups have combined forces, maybe there is a new group of people who qualify to be labeled as wingnuts. Perhaps they are all wingnuts now.

Right now, we have a new name for this alliance of Clintonites, Talk Radio Wingnut Warriors and Conserva-gensia.

If McCain would win he’ll be gone before inauguration day.

And he’ll be gone from the Senate in 2013.

Dork- Go ahead and attack me all you want, I am a big boy. I can fight back if I think there is any point to it.

Not attacking; just thought you should know what a all-Hillary, all-the-time blog you’ve become. Dont think that’s such a great thing.

This is John’s blog; he gets to talk about whatever he likes here. If you make a blog, you can talk about whatever you like.

    Boy, I love this argument.

And you’re free not to shower for a month and reek like shit. Your body, your BO. But I’d guess you’d want someone to tell if you were offensive.

All of you people sound frustrated and bitter. Can Obama help you locate the source?
