Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

All hail the time of the bunny!

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

In after Baud. Damn.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

The Glorious Iraq Campaign continues to bear fruit

In one case, the U.S. Agency for International Development contracted with Bechtel Corp. in 2004 to construct a $50 million children’s hospital in Basra, only to “essentially terminate” the project in 2006 because of monthslong delays.

But rather than terminate the project, U.S. officials modified the contract to change the scope of the work. As a result, a U.S. database of Iraq reconstruction contracts shows the project as complete “when in fact the hospital was only 35 percent complete when work was stopped,” said investigators in describing the practice of “descoping” as frequent.

No post on the Obama-Fox interview today John? It was remarkable for a couple of reasons:

    1) It seemed g-d reasonable compared to the ABC debate;
    2) Obama handled the same set of character questions with aplomb.

Watch it. It reminded me of why he’s so MUCH better than HRC it’s not even close.

Here’s one of the most insightful comments about Obama that I’ve seen, from OpenLeft (not TalkLeft):

But you know how Newton is thought of as the first modern scientist? Did you know he was also into alchemy? Turns out Newton was also the last of the physical philosophers as well. Einstein is thought of as the first post Newtonian scientist, but he never did believe in quantum mechanics.

My hope is Obama will be the first modern progressive leader in this new era Paul discusses. But we already know that even if this is true, he is also the last of the old style that still believe much of the conservative spin and critique.

The beach would be not be a relief today in SoCal. It’s hideously oppressively hot everywhere. No escape from it today. And my freaking house gets hotter than the outside air! Must be time to re-install that air conditioner.
Climatic note: I have lived for a half-century in California and only for the last three years have my wife and I felt a distinct need for air conditioning. I don’t like it, but it can be impossible in this house. This pattern of one heat wave after another, or fifteen Santa Ana conditions a year seems to be the pattern now, and I KNOW that something is rotten in the state of Denmark. (Actually, Denmark seems pretty goddamned desirable right now.)

It was 90 here in Santa Barbara, so I was out surfing for about 3 hours. Those poor suckers on the beach probably burned themselves, but the water was a cool 58 degrees.

In my part of the foothills of the San Gabriels it was hot. It’s 8PM, PDT as I write and it’s still 85. Hell is when it doesn’t cool off at night. Not so much a breath of breeze either.

It’s 100 degrees in Southern California and I’m stuck in the office thinking about the beach. barbecued and drank a lot of beer.

Good shade in the yard, so it wasn’t so bad. Spent the day at the patio table reading. Helped the boy get his SimCity budget under control. Nothing but win today.

    Open thread? Awesome.

I am going to be listening to :Disturber of the Peace: The Life of H. L. Mencken” (Unabridged)By: William Manchester, for, like, the next month. Yay.

This month I’ve been listening to “A Dream of Reason, A History of Western Philosophy, from the Greeks to the Renaissance.” By Anthony Gottlieb. Wow. It’s been fantastic. I’ve had long commutes recently, and it could be worse than to listen to an English lady read an Anthony Gottlieb book.

OK, have fun talking. I opened up the house today at 8:00 pm cuz then it was 75 outside instead of 80. Yeah. NorCal. It was a great day. We have happy tomatoes. :) Georgeous out now. (o:

It was a foggy mild day in the mid 60’s here on the southern tip of coastal Oregon, but just north of town it was clear and sunny. Made for a great afternoon motorcycle ride, and gave me a chance to harden the rear up for the road trip to Spokane this Thursday. :)

It is supposed to be cloudy today, around 60 with a 30% chance of showers and 70% in the evening. NOAA shows that rain is coming for the next few days but that it is expected to be warm and sunny Thursday. I prefer to start the trip out dry if I can, but my gear is rainproof so I ride either way.

I am still unsure if I will cut over to Grants Pass, then over and up through central Oregon to The Dalles (first night destination), orgo up the coast to Lincoln City, then over and through Portland to I84 and The Dalles. The last two weeks in central Oregon have been pretty rough, but the last two days have warmed up to the mid 60’s and the snow is melting.

I prefer the central Oregon route as it is shorter, and the scenery is great. The coast run is nice, but congested at times. Either way, I am looking forward to the first long ride of the year. There is wireless and a hot tub waiting at the hotel that we always stay at, so I may post some pics of the trip.

I just saw something over on Ginmar’s blog that McCain is getting a something like $58K medical disability payment that is 100% tax-free, and I was wondering if she was right that vets are only entitled to the 100% if the disability is actually 100% (e.g., loss of hand, leg, arm, or foot). McCain certainly doesn’t have full use of all of his appendages, but I’m pretty sure he has all of them and they all work to a certain extent. Just curious.

It’s been raining steadily for the last 8 hours here in the Boston area. This is a good thing, as it keeps the “the world is my ashtray” types from starting any more brush fires.
