John McCain edition. I don’t want these guys to win their party back, not when DeLay/Bushism is already so close to discrediting the GOP forever, but it is refreshing to watch them try.

I think you ought to gather up all those quotes and publish them once a month here from now until November, maybe once a week as we get closer to it. Of course, adding any new idiotic things he’s likely to say as we go along.

Kara Hopkins’s string of McCain quotes reads like the transcript of a fabulous YouTube compilation. If only someone had the time and access to footage to put it all together. No, I’m not volunteering.

They’d have to take the axe to DeLay/Bushism if they seriously wanted to reclaim it. That said, one party systems are bad systems. I’d happily see a GOP that serves as a functioning foil to the Democratic Party rather than a magnification of all its flaws and weaknesses set up as an “alternative”.

Great list of quotes. McCain has been wrong about nearly everything in the past 7 years. This one’s a doozie:

“If we do set a date for withdrawal, Al Qaida will then win. … We’re all over the world. One of the obligations, unfortunately, of being a great superpower is that we have to take care of the world’s security.”

New GOP motto: “socialize warfare, not healthcare”! The GOP has reached a level of dishonesty I previously thought was impossible. While we’re on the subject of the Bushification of the GOP, i’d say that this gem from Ben Stein dovetails nicely:

I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you

Wow. Where do people like Stein and McCain get this stuff? How on earth can the GOP, as a party, toggle between “We don’t nation build”/”We are the world’s police” and “Ivory tower multiculturalism is destroying America”/”Scientists and academics are not culturally respectful as conservatives are”.

The morons that comprise the GOP base will swallow absolutely anything. All you need to do in order to be a Republican is to “hate liberals”. These people stand for nothing other than that.

McCain continues to get a total free pass from the broadcast media.

He was on “Morning Joe” today. There was not a single follow-up question from any of the co-hosts. (clearly, Mika B. has been given instructions to clam up when interviewing McCain). This “interview” was almost content free, indeed, the main goal seemed to be to see how long they could make McCain smile. He was positively beaming, and why wouldn’t he be, it’s good to be the king!

I understand that Obama will be the only guest on Press the Meat Sunday.

Can we have a pool here at BJ about how much of the hour will be devoted to Rev. Wright, Minister Farrakhan, and Professor Ayers?

I’m betting 50% at least, although Timmeh might want to question Obama about whether he and his wife should be charged with child abuse for forcing their two daughters to sit through hate-speech sermons, and, of course, whether he is a Black Muslim.

Today is a particularly unhappy anniversary for me. Five years ago, while watching Mr. McFlightsuit land on an aircraft carrier and declare victory, I had a revelation. Like a punch to the face, I realized that the Iraq war was political theater to the Bush administration, and nothing else.

Previous to that, I supported the Iraq War, believed Colin Powell’s recitation of lies to the U.N., etc.

I remain deeply ashamed of that uninformed, lazy decision.

My father, who was a Goldwater Republican, then a Reagan Republican, was nonetheless a guy who had little trust in politicians (especially Nixon). Even though we agreed on little politically during most of his life, I valued his counsel more than I can say.

In his later years, he voted for Bill Clinton twice, to my delight and amazement. Were he alive today, I’m sure he’d be a Democrat.

And that’s the “particularly unhappy” part of today’s anniversary for me.

It is also the 10th anniversary of my fathers’ passing.

    Here’s to you, Dad!

John McCain is a complete fucking absolutely unambiguous trainwreck of a person and a candidate.

I keep saying this and yet people keep thinking that this lunatic old fart can win the coming general election.

He can’t. He is completely incompetant. His own words prove it. Pick a subject, the guy is a disaster looking for a place to happen.

    In honor of the day:

    Turn the Boat Around
    (Tune: Yellow Rose of Texas)

Our leader landed on the deck dressed in a soldier suit,
A banner stretched above his head, he looked so doggone cute.
But San Diego could be seen, right there in the background,
So the order soon was given, “Turn the boat around.”

    Chorus:

It’s time to turn the boat around, that’s what the people say.
The course our leader’s setting is exactly the wrong way.
The compass reads “disaster,” he’s run us hard aground,
It’s time to fire the skipper, and then turn the boat around.

He claimed that he’d found danger, as plain as white and black,
And the source of all that danger was in far-away Iraq.
Terror, weapons, poison gas, nukular missiles, too,
All waiting, primed and ready, to use on me and you.

So we went in a-shooting, and had ‘em on the run,
With bought-and-paid-for press along, to show us all the fun.
We never found those weapons, the poison gas and such,
And the folks whose land we shot to hell don’t like us very much.

    Repeat Chorus

    “Stay the course,” he told us, but wouldn’t show his map;
He wants complacent citizens to go back to their nap.
To end the war in Iraq, he’s got a cunning plan –
He’ll pull the troops out one fine day – and send them to Iran!

Now, here at home, the policies are tilted toward the rich,
Big tax cuts and deficits, the good old bait and switch!
Our leader loves the rich, and puts the dollars in their fist,
But for the poor, there’s still the war, so they can just enlist!

    Repeat Chorus

This is the “ship of state,” not another “photo op,”
And when it gets to going, it’s damn-all hard to stop.
But if we can turn a carrier to try to fool the press,
Then we can turn the country ‘round, and get out of this mess.

    Repeat Chorus

Those middle-class voters Hillarity says she is ‘fighting hard’ for should hear who she is really fighting for:

“And you know what, rich people — God bless us — we deserve all the opportunities to make sure our country and our blessings continue for the next generation.”

    But Obama is an elitist!

McCain has been wrong about nearly everything in the past 7 years.

7 years? Good lord, McCain has been wrong about nearly everything his entire friggin’ life . It was difficult for me to imagine that we could have a republican nominee who was less intelligent, less intellectually curious, more inept, possibly more unethical, and more of an all-around lying sack of shit than Bush, but then along came McCain.

    Again, ditto.

While I would have voted for McCain in 00, I can’t stand that pandering sonofabitch now. Yep, look at all those rosy prognostications in the past from Mr. Straight Talker. While on his own website from a speech given about this time last year…

…but for the first time in four years, we have a strategy that deals with how things really are in Iraq and not how we wish them to be.

Several times I’ve heard him say in this election cycle that all during the first four years he knew it was fucked up. But how many times while he knew it was a clusterfuck did he as a senior member of a Republican controlled Congress with a seat on the Armed Services Committee call for any oversight hearings? Hearings that were the norm in past wars? Zero.

Instead he was too busy in knee-pad service to the Purple Heart bandaid and sky-fairy warriors in the Party of Bush so he could position himself with them for this presidential run. Asshole doesn’t begin to describe this bastard.

The fucking warmonger Bush ain’t finished yet. I think more and more that the assholes will start a war with Iran or bust. I hope they have those impeachment papers ready to go. What better way to stampede the sheeple to McInsane than a little manufactured dust-up with Iran near election time?

“One of the obligations, unfortunately, of being a great superpower is that we have to take care of the world’s security.” 2.3.08

Neglecting the general stupidity of the concept, I’ll only remark that the Current Administration is working hard to make sure that we’re a great superpower no longer, and whatever loose ends in that endeavor they fail to tie up, McCain is sure to run straight into the ground.

Andrew Sullivan voices a similar sentiment.

“Some people say John McCain isn’t conservative enough. But there’s more to conservatism than low taxes, Jesus, and waterboarding at Gitmo,” – P.J. O’Rourke.

I wish that didn’t come across as a brave statement. But for the next generation in particular, conservatism has become synonymous with debt, torture and bigotry. It will take another generation to repair the damage to the brand that Bush, Cheney and Rove have inflicted.

I’d disagree with the last, by the way. One of the things I will say for Bush and Rove was they realized the Republican party would need minority votes in the long run. But then the Republican debates turned into a contest to see who could play the fear the illegal immigrants card the best.
