Goal Thermometer

I changed the goal, and let’s try for 5 more by the end of the month, on top of the 15k we have already raised.

A big win in North Carolina, and the margin is so close that it is a win in Indiana. We may finally be near the end.

*** Update ***

LMAO. Clinton is speaking- “Full speed to the White house, she says, but can you stop by the atm (my website) and dump some money so we can continue our journey?”

Too funny. Compare and contrast the two speeches. A gracious speech from Obama, a beg for donations from Hillary. If I donate $.01, will it cost her campaign more than the donation?

*** Update #2 ***

She looks flat, and for a fleeting moment, I had a twinge of sympathy. She is reading this speech emotionlessly, phoning it in, and she is broken. She knows it is over, and you can’t help but feel slightly bad for her. And then I remember all the crap she has pulled this campaign and my sympathy erodes.

*** Update #3 ***

This is sounding more and more like a concession speech and she is, in fact, dropping out. This may be the last hurrah.

*** Update #4 ***

Others are reading it the same way- this is over and she knows it, and that was as close as we will get tonight.

I was worried – well, slightly – in that I’d already donated through your ActBlue page after the results came in, but I see that the thermometer counts donations since today, so I’m guessing my donation counted towards the goal.

It’s all money to the same place, anyway.

Here’s hoping you are soon forced to turn your proven fundraising power to other, perhaps less political causes.

Clinton won’t win Indiana without the help of crossover republicans that will vote for McCain in November.
So obviously Obama should pack it in.

“This primary election on Tuesday is a game changer. This is going to make a huge difference in what happens going forward. The entire country – probably even a lot of the world is looking to see what North Carolina decides.”

It made a huge difference for the goal posts, they have now been moved further than ever before.

I voted for Obama in the California primary, but couldn’t really qualify myself as a true believer. I thought (and still think) Hillary would make a perfectly competent president. But, what finally turned me:

    1. Her vote on the war. Plus I think we’d end up bombing Iran.

    2. I’m just basically sick of the Clintons.

Now…I’m really, really sick of the Clintons. Her campaign tactics make me realize she’d be perfectly capable of flying back to her home state in the middle of the campaign to make sure a brain-damaged man was executed. If it helped her chances.

A thought about the fundraising. Clinton is a done deal. Buzz is that she might approach Obama to help her with her campaign debts. This is apparently a common thing for a winner to do for also-rans, and Obama is a magnanimous kind of guy. So it seems a fair shot.

I know many here would rather…well, have unpleasant things happen…than provide financial support to the Clintons.

So — I feel awful saying it — if that’s important to you, you might want to hold back until things shake out and you can know your money is going towards beating McCain.

I don’t actually know if the money is available to him for the general — but it’s available to him for the primary, right? And if Sen. Clinton continues to campaign, or puts her campaign on hold, or even if she concedes, he’s got a lot of convention organizing to do, and lots of things like that to do, you know.

And that requires he spend money for primary expenses. So I wouldn’t worry about Sen. Obama having plenty of good uses for the money he raises for his primary bid. He’ll find lots of good uses for it.

I like to call that, ‘recycling’.

The fundraising letters stopped coming until recently, I’ve gotten two so far. If they don’t start coming again this summer, I’ll give them another penny by credit card. Hell I bet the transaction costs them that much.

Will the money that Obama has in the bank for the primary be available to him in the general?

My (lay) impression, from reading political magazines, was that the primary and general funds are completely separate – but there are a lot of ways to spend money between now and late August, including pricy national advertising. The General Election Campaign will be, what, nine weeks long?

And there must be some overlap, as some things can be pre-paid: if the Obama campaign sets up offices, then – even if the rent may have to be paid from the general election money – they can presumably equip and stock the offices during the primary season. And once Clinton drops out, all future fundraising can be directed to the gneeral election fund if desirable.

I would LURV to see him pull an Indiana win out from under her arse. But she should be proud: she once again gets the under-educated, under-informed, last-minute kneejerk old fart vote.

Also, I would hate to think my hard-earned cash to Obama would go to pay Hil’s bills.

I don’t think she would consider VEEP and I don’t think he would offer. At least I hope not.

In White County, north of Lafayette, there were still signs that said “N*****r don’t let the sun go down on you here” in 1998. Obama got 45% of the vote there. (I couldn’t stand to actually leave the word in.)

I disagree. It’s an instant, no-hassle way to win back all the Hillary supporters, which is going to look like a more and more attractive option once the media starts asking whether OMG, has Obama burned too many bridges in the primary Mark my words, it’ll be a fait accompli by June.

But, he ran on changing politics, getting rid of the old pandering and tricks. To pick Hillary would make him look like a hypocrite to a lot of people who believed in him.

Lake County Republican Chairman John Curley stood by his Democratic counterpart Rudy Clay as the nation waited for vote totals from Lake County. “There’s no hanky panky going on,” Curley said after members of the national media wondered why Lake County’s votes were taking so much longer to count than the rest of the state. “We have more than 11,000 absentee ballots, far more than we’ve ever had before,” Curley said, insisting it simply takes time to get through that many tallies.

The two party chairmen planned to meet at the government center at about 11 p.m., and Curley promised the vote totals would soon be released.

so even the REPUBLICANS are saying there’s no hanky-panky going on in Lake County? jesus christ, is it my birthday?

Interesting to me that all the men on MSNBC are saying Clinton was conciliatory, but Rachel Maddow, the black republicanish woman and ME all say no way, she’s going scorched earth.

Is what men hear and what women hear that different? And who’s got the right instinct? I would love to be wrong, but I didn’t hear much back-down out of her. Maybe it was the call out to Michigan that gave me such a bad taste.

I think you have to realize where Rachel is coming from- she, like us, has realized there is no conceivable way for Hillary to win unless Obama was destroyed. Tonight changes nothing in that regard. The others seem to think there was an argument for her before tonight, but now it ends. Rachel thinks, no, we are right where we were 12 hours ago- she has no chance to win unless Obama is destroyed. Throw in the Clinton spin about the new delegate totals and the October surprise bs, and you can see why Rachel thinks that.

Hell, I understand where Rachel is coming from- since shortly after super tuesday, I have repeatedly said this is over after each successive primary, because it became increasingly clear to me that the only way Hillary could win was a total Obama collapse.

I think the men see that after tonight there is just no conceivable argument for Hillary, so it is over. Rachel thinks there has been no conceivable argument for months, so what changed tonight?

Mark my words, we’ll hear Lake County:2008::Cook County:1960 till the end of our days, only it will be intra-party carping.

I’m so fucking sick of hearing the Party bitch and moan about every single fucking election they lose being stolen. Call it Florida 2000 Syndromes. It was Ohio in 2004 and it’s been every fucking primary and caucus so far this year. Here’s a few little hints:

    (a) not every goddamn election has to be stolen, ok? sometimes you just lose. deal with it gracefully.

    (b) you have to complain beforehand and you have to have proof to make this argument — election results don’t get reversed very often, frankly, and after it’s over the evidence trail is gone and it’s too late

    (c) if you make this argument every single election, people won’t listen to you when it’s actually true — there’s this story about a kid being eaten by a wolf you may have heard of

This advice is for all Democrats — Clinton and Obama supporters. Quit whining.

Mark Warner would be a terrible VP choice, because we need him to win the Virginia senate seat. There are actually a couple of demographics Obama could use some help with, if you think that a VP pick would actually help. Hispanics (Richardson). Working class whites (Bayh, or Bob Casey). Women (Sibelius). People that think he doesn’t understand foreign policy (Biden, Clark, whothehellknows).

    I agree with John:

I think the men see that after tonight there is just no conceivable argument for Hillary, so it is over. Rachel thinks there has been no conceivable argument for months, so what changed tonight?

I was thinking the same thing: we’ve seen the irrationality of Hillary’s numbers for a while now, but the fact that pundits are accepting the truth, at least on MSNBC, is a positive sign. (I never even accepted that bullshit about her funding success after Pa. I thought those numbers were cooked anyway.)

but I really can’t see Hill going positive. in fact from the beginning I have yet to hear her give one gracious concession speech because she always seems to be winding up for the next pitch.

maybe she is starting to admit the truth to herself… but she’s not ready to admit it to anyone else. I would love to be the proverbial fly on the wall if the supers sit her down tomorrow for an intervention.

I think that there will be a lot of excitement and speculation about Obama’s possible veeps… I don’t think Clinton on the ticket would buy him anything. The Clinton fanatics would not be satisfied — in fact they would see it as a booby prize (no joke intended). And Obama would have to be concerned that Hillary would take away some of his control and/or authority over the ticket because I can’t see her or Bill taking a subservient role.

there are so many exciting possibilities to strengthen the ticket, and maybe a Clinton backer could be mentioned (Clark?), but Hillary would be a net loss.

If the Clintons don’t get behind Obama, their legacy is toast. And Obama can more than make up for the few diehard McCain-loving Hilbots with his new voters, crossovers etc.

MSNBC just announced for Clinton at 51%, but Obama has made up anything she gained in Pa. A really hair’s breadth win for her. whoopee. Only 20,000 votes bet. them.

Rachel: “a post-rational approach for Hillary.”

Also, concerning the whole sympathy for Hillary thing? I haven’t read all the other posts yet, so maybe someone made this point, but I think it is kind of like in Film Noir movies where the “hero” does morally bad things, in the name of some questionably good ideal (The American Dream, love, fraternity, etc.) You know the character is going wrong, and you know they are doing bad things, but you still feel sorry for them, if only because their myopia makes them blind to what they have become. Then every so often, you punch out, and go, “Hey, wait a minute! These are awful people! Fuck them.”
