My man J.H. Kunstler, of the blog Clusterfuck Nation, is transformed from “fringe nutjob” to WaPo columnist:
The “fringe nutjob” comment came from a local, but widely listened-to, talk radio show, where the host proclaimed Peak Oil to be a ridiculous notion.
To echo Kunstler: isn’t it amazing that there is zero, nada, zilch discussion of this issue among the presidential candidates. Oh sure, they moan about high gas prices and promise to “develop alternatives”, but that’s about it.
We may well be past the Peak; some PO experts think we crossed it back in 2006. Maybe not, but we’re certainly at a Peak plateau: Saudi production is flat, and world demand is rising. If so, we’re entering the era that Kunstler calls The Long Emergency, and we’ll need far better leadership than we’ve currently got to navigate through some difficult times.
In other words, Puerto Rico’s June 1 Democratic primary is the kind of contest that Hillary Clinton’s campaign would dismiss as meaningless if Barack Obama were favored to win it. But Clinton is favored to win it easily, so she’s casting it as an important test of strength among Hispanic voters, and she campaigned there this past holiday weekend.
Yeah. Because “Hispanic voters” describes a homogenous group of people. Sure, you might look at a map and see that there are more countries in Middle/South America than Puerto Rico. You might think that a guy who is second generation Nicuraguan or third generation Mexican or fourth generation Brazillian might have different concerns than a Puerto Rican. You might even wonder if all of these people would resent being viewed a big blob of voters without distinct cultural differences or even if some members of your targetted voter blob are sick of being singled out as “X voters” rather than “American voters.”
Jake,
We’re seeing that play out in south Florida right now. For the first time in like, forever, there’s a district where Cuban Democrats outnumber Cuban Republicans, and where non-Cuban Hispanics are a significant enough part of the electorate that a non-Cuban Democrat has a shot at winning a seat away from one of the Miami Three. Funny–Columbians and Venezuelans and Mexicans don’t respond as much to Castro-hating as older Cubans do.

My 20 year old son is working in Denver for the summer (I’m in north Alabama). I was amazed/dismayed to find that you really can’t take a train from anywhere near here to Denver. Hell, you can’t take a train from Kansas City to Denver! Essentially, you can only get to Denver from Chicago.
I live 10 miles from I-65 here in Alabama. My folks live 5 miles from I-65 in Indiana. No train runs along the I-65 corridor.
Meanwhile, people are living in 17th century villages, 200 miles from Paris, and commuting to Paris to work. Takes 45 minutes via high-speed rail. That’s the way to live!

I posted that little tidbit about the Michigan undeclared delegates last week at TL pointing out to them that the delegates aren’t really uncommitted anymore. of the 36 uncommitted district delegates only 3 went to Hillary and 2 went to Edwards.
The rest of the uncommitteds get decided on June 7th I believe and we will likely see similar results.
Oddly enough my comment didn’t spur a lot of discussion over there.

Montysano…That’s an interesting observation about trains (including your anecdote about how they do things in France). I live in Waco, which is halfway between Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin on I-35. A high-speed rail that ran from DFW all the way down to San Antonio would be great for a smaller town like Waco, which would allow people here to work (and play) in the larger cities while not having to live amid the congestion.
I have felt for sometime now that Obama is the one person that “Frightens Me”. I believe the Bible has warned us that “A man will come from the East that will be charismatic in nature and have proposed solutions for all our problems and his rhetoric will attract will many supporters!”

You make me sick. I detect racism, sir, in YOUR words. Seems a white woman scares you to death.
Just saw the MUP on cable news, thrashing John McCain about the head and shoulders. Every other word out of his mouth was, as it should be, “George W. Bush”.
The rather tepid response came from the chairman of the RNC. I didn’t get his name, but it might as well have been “Clueless Old White Dude”. Even he didn’t seem to believe the crap he was slinging. As I’ve said many times: if the Dems can’t beat…correction: thrash this band of losers, then they deserve their years in the wilderness.
We’re up to four times that Clinton mentioned RFK’s assassination, each time referring to her hubby remaining in the campaign in June. Last Friday. In March, to Time Magazine. At a fundraiser in Washington DC in May, and at a stump speech in Shepherdstown, WV.
It’s a talking point for her.
But saying “I’m hanging around in case Obama dies” is probably the last thing to say if you want to pull some delegates to your side. If she really wanted to continue in the race just in case the last thing she should be raising is Obama’s mortality. If perchance Obama does get ventilated does Clinton really think all those Obama delegates will embrace her? No way.
Face it, this is intentional, but it’s not a strategy to get elected. And it sure as hell isn’t to bring the Democratic Party together.

i think its going to take McCain and the RNC a long time to catch up to the fact that Obama is not your typical shrinking violet Dem, who tends to bow their head when attacked.
also, i wonder if Obama’s general genteel style is part of a Rope-A-Dope type thing–the Republicans watch him in the primaries, and assume his gentility = pussy.
then they get gobsmacked when Obama starts coming out with harder and harder shots at McCain–today’s “hat it hand” line i thought was particularly brutal.

Hillary Clinton has a new add emphasizing fiscal responsibility. I’d find it more convincing if her campaign wasn’t twenty million dollars in debt.

I think Obama is just playing this much like political aikido. The US Surgeon General has already issued a warning about Presidential debate drinking games. In a McCain/Obama match up, taking a shot every time McCane looks angry could result in ATO in less than 15 minutes.

I started reading it 2 years ago, and while I usually didn’t agree with them, they seems to have some really good discussions. As soon as I found it, it seemed to slowly go downhill, month by month. Look at what passes for “discussion” these days..
Basically, Obama named the wrong Nazi death camp his ancestor help liberate, therefore he’s a liar.

Or calling Obama the n-word. Get him mad enough, and I can totally see it happening.

He’s using his opponents own words and attacks against them and after doing so for so long the opponent will become enraged and blow up, in fact I am betting Obama is just pushing the buttons so McShitstain has a canary or a coronary in public.

…i can’t wait to see the debates. McCain apparently has a real problem with Obama–on a personal level–and it’ll be fun watching Obama taunt McCain into slamming his fist on the podium or maybe, if we’re lucky, confusing diane sawyer with his wife and calling her the c-word.

The US Surgeon General has already issued a warning about Presidential debate drinking games. In a McCain/Obama match up, taking a shot every time McCane looks angry could result in ATO in less than 15 minutes.

So, John, what happened to RedState.com?
I started reading it 2 years ago, and while I usually didn’t agree with them, they seems to have some really good discussions. As soon as I found it, it seemed to slowly go downhill, month by month. Look at what passes for “discussion” these days..
Basically, Obama named the wrong Nazi death camp his ancestor help liberate, therefore he’s a liar.
Seriously, how do you deal with this kind of nonsense without going insane?

Or calling Obama the n-word. Get him mad enough, and I can totally see it happening.
They’ll have to put a bib on McCain to contain the overflow from all the indignant sputtering he’ll be doing. Fortunately, they get a deal on bibs when they buy his diapers.

Hm. Actually, I’d like to rescind the second half of my comment. On another thread, I indicated that I was uncomfortable with some remarks against Clinton supporters that were based upon gender. It’s not fair for me to do that, while on the other hand, making a really age-ist joke about McCain, is it?
Sorry — that was kind of jerk-ish of me.

Given the track record of ‘solid upstanding Christians’ in history, the other side can’t do much worse if they’re in charge.
