Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

The words do not have to be perfect.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

All hail the time of the bunny!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Good On Bob Barr

Bob Barr’s campaign, reacting to a Stormfront endorsement:

The Barr campaign is not going to be a vehicle for every fringe and hate group to promote itself. We do not want and will not accept the support of haters. Anyone with love in their heart for our country and for every resident of our country regardless of race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation is welcome with open arms.

Tell the haters I said don’t let the door hit you on the backside on your way out!

Good for him.

Not bad for somebody who was such a douchebag in Congress. It almost makes me like him, but not quite.

Wow, looks like Mr. Barr underwent some kind of conversion from “bat shit insane” to “that kooky guy who looks a little like the bespectacled bad guy from the first Indiana Jones movie”.

There is hope for the Republic.

I’m not a huge fan of his, but it’s definitely a step up from the guy who led the morality police in 1998.

I’m still not a libertarian, though.

It’s so refreshing to see one group of haters slowly but firmly back the fuck away from another group of haters. It’s nice to know that Bob Barr thinks we should be crushed under the heel of our unregulated corporate masters regardless of our race, credo, sexuality, or ethnicity.

Does this mean that Barr’s ability to draw Republicans dissatisfied with McCain just dropped significantly?

I’m glad we can go back to debating real issues instead of which lunatic fringe is screaming loudest.

    Good for Barr!

Now, lets talk turkey: when does Barr want troops out of Iraq? is he for the Webb GI Bill?

Oh wait… Barr is a “reformed” GOP’r? Like the lady in Texas who ran as an Independent, lest she lose as a Republican? Like Lieberman who ran as an Independent because he lost as a Republican in Democratic clothing? I give the Obama campaign how?

    OT, but

Cheney was at the Press Club to congratulate this year’s winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney’s revelation on MSNBC last year that “Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins.”

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would “have no objections” though he said he doubted Obama would want one – “certainly not before November.”

Then came the offensive punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne’s memoir “Blue Skies, No Fences” last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father’s and his mother’s side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother’s side, the vice president said.

“So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don’t even live in West Virginia,” Cheney quipped.

I’m glad to see that since Macaca sank George Allen, rightwing politicans are disassociating themselves from racist nutjobs. These people have been out of America’s mainstream for several decades, but a deferential press has been afraid to call prominent politicians on their disgusting associations with these groups.

“We denounce anybody who doesn’t want to treat everybody equally under the law.”

This simple declaration from a Barr consultant is so straightforward.

A great comeback to any and all manner of bigotry.

Thank you Scotty, for that youTube clip. I sent it to my son, a rabid right wing Republican with a great sense of humor (I would think the rabid republican thing would contrindicate a sense of humor, but apparently not), who can’t STAND Bob Barr and to his wife, a nice liberal Democrat, who is in the process of weaning my grandson and converting him to a formula baby. I knew my daughter in law would love the cheese bit and my son might look at Barr in a more tolerant light if he makes him laugh.

After the past 6 months or so of the never-ending primary I value tolerance a lot more than I ever did before.

GWB was the straw that broke the Barr camel back. He and some other conservatives broke out in front on civil liberties over a year ago. That at least was refreshing.

John, that’s why I keep coming back here – very instructional.

    As per the link:

Indeed, the primary reason for which I authored the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 was to ensure that each state remained free to determine for its citizens the basis on which marriage would be recognized within its borders, and not be forced to adopt a definition of marriage contrary to its views by another state.

Now, to me this is the most disingenous crap argument ever made – “I authored an overwhelming federal law defining marriage in only one way to insure that states had the freedom to differ” as that surely was not his original intent. If the law ended up allowing that scenario, it was accidental.

However, it seems that Mr. Barr has had a change of heart on a number of issues, and I welcome it. I think folks of every stripe have probably learned a thing or two about the desirability of unlimited federal power since GWB took office.

Plus…even if it were his intent, there’s still the little problem that such an intent opposes the Constitutional guarantee that states recognize each others’ actions. He could get around that by arguing that the Supreme Court’s “public policy” exception should apply to same-sex marriage, but that very argument is discriminatory. Yet he includes sexual orientation among those categories he doesn’t want his supporters discriminating against.

I suspect he’s changing his views for the better in this respect, but it’s harder to give him points for improvement if we can’t come to agreement as to whether anything’s actually improved.
