According to Don Cherry, Fleury’s goaltending performance last night was the best he has ever seen (watch the video).
Also, according to my mother, all 17,000 Penguins tickets were sold out in 17 minutes.

I’m not even a hockey fan, and I was glued to the set to early morning. Fleury was amazing.

Ah, Don Cherry. That’s a blast from the past. Last time the Bruins were interesting was when he was coaching them. And that was longer ago than the last time the Celtics were in the finals. Gotta hand it to those Jacob Brothers, I didn’t think it was possible to turn the Bruins into the 4th team in town, but they did it.

He single-handedly kept them in the series, no doubt. The only thing that marred last night was the zero-tolerance for goaltender interference. The refs should have some intent leeway.

Ha, here I was tuned in to watch the coronation of the Red Wings on home ice and your team steals it away.
Congrats, that extra 50 minutes of overtime hockey last night was pretty exciting…

Yeah, I flaked on the first 2 1/2 periods, no bother, as those guys decided to give the fans 2 games last night. Fleury stopped what, like fifty some odd shots? Tenacious.

I’ve never been a huge Fleury fan, but credit where it is due, he had a world class game last night.
Otto Man
I’ve never agreed with Cherry before, but he’s right. I stayed up through the second OT before finally hauling my ass to bed.

He was amazing. So was Osgood, too. But damn, both teams missed some almost-gimmies. There was as much luck last nite as their was glove-handling and stickwork.
Pens only slight Vegas dogs for Wednesday. I’ll bet Crosby and Hossa step up big on home ice.

The fact that Fleury is so amazing and the Penguins are still down is a testament to the fact that the Wings hopelessly outclass the Penguins everywhere else on the ice. But substandard teams have won before on the backs of a really hot goalie, so I’m not writing Pittsburgh off yet.

This is excellent news for the Wings!!!!

More proof you need some Québecois to make it a real game.

Cherry’s suit on ESPN last night/this morning was positively sedate — bright yellow, sure, but no wild patterns or flowers.
Was out last night and actually forgot about the game (my Sharks were pretty forgettable in the playoffs) but was shocked when I checked the score on ESPN.com and found it was still on.
Took Pittsburgh a while to wake up, but looks like they’re actually making this a series. Good on them.

He was awesome, but still not as good as both Bob Mason and Kelly Hrudey in the 1987 three overtime game between the Caps and Islanders. More wide open style of game back then, and both goalies were unbelievable. I met Mason briefly on a golf course a couple years ago (he’s now an assistant with the Minnesota Wild) and told him that those two goalies combined for the finest display of goaltending I believe I’ll ever witness.

I’m still paying for the 3rd overtime and watching the game winner right now as I am on my fifth cup of coffee for the day — but I have to agree with Cherry — Fleury was absolutely sick last night as well as lucky. Fun to watch a player get into a zone and stay there for two games.

Great game, no doubt, but Don Cherry is a fucking idiot.
Incertus
Fleury was awesome, but as awesome as Hasek stopping 70 against the Devils in 1999? That’s a tall order, especially since I believe Hasek pitched a shutout that night.
Bill
I hate to agree with Don Cherry but it is true.
Red Wings will still take the series. All those Swedes.
Must make Cherry livid.

How about Ron Tugnutt stopping 70 in a regular season game against Boston? That was only one five minute overtime. THAT was impressive.
FupDuck
I agree with Humboldt. Cherry is an idiot. I was a goalie back in the day, and watching goalies is what I do.
Both goalies were good last night, but both were the recipients of massively good bounces. Hardly the stuff of legend. Great game, though.

Don’t forget that the Wings played stupid and took dumb penalties. The refs did stink, but the experienced Wings acted like the younger team.

As an Ornette Coleman fan, I was hoping for a different story based on the headline. :(

How can Cherry like Fleury? Fleury wears a mask.

I think the differentiating aspect of Fleury’s performance last night was that every save from the middle of the third period on basically had Lord Stanley’s cup on the line. He was awesome.

I think I know what you mean by Detroit outclassing the Penguins, but I wouldn’t call the Pens “substandard” by any stretch.
