Clinton Dropping Out on Friday

According to ABC News:

Sen. Hillary Clinton will hold an event with supporters by Friday, likely ending her historic bid for the White House and ceding the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama, ABC News has learned.

I don’t know why she has to wait till Friday, but it’s good news. We can now get on with defeating McCain in November.

Clinton, if she does it, will be a hell of a surrogate for Obama, in communicating to her audience. if she can get even just a chunk of her following to go to Obama, McCain will be roasted come November.

I was thinking the same thing after clicking submit on the other thread. It’s media speculating she’ll quit friday, however she may just be gathering them together to announce an independent run as “Americans For Hillary”.

I almost want to see her run as an Independent because, honestly, I think Obama will still win. Nothing would make me happier than to see Barack Obama win in November while John McCain comes in third.

Does the losing coach call a press conference to “concede” on the Wednesday following the Super Bowl?

No. Shut up and go away. You didn’t have the guts to finish with any kind of dignity. It’s too late to get it back.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Obama’s team had better send a stenographer, two notaries, three video crews, several witnesses, some priests, and a polygraph expert — and keep a couple of exorcists in reserve.

Otherwise, a Clinton concession might be harder to later verify as a sighting of Bigfoot.

    Calm down John.

It’s taken three weeks longer than I predicted about a month and a half ago, but it’s happened in the exact way I had posted: The party would confront her with reality, she’d kick and fight a little, try and extract something and eventually leave the race, still a Democrat.

I can’t vouch for some of her followers — but she’ll rally. She’s not a Lieberman. I know that as a former Republican, coalescing around the leader comes instinctively, and it’s probably the right way to do things, but the Democrats have never done things the easy or tidy way.

The upside is there is plenty of time for things to settle in — and after the Worst Speech in Presidential History McCain puked up yesterday, this part of it might even be fun.

Let’s at least try and be optimistic for at least a little while.

Wow. Tell it to Al Gore.

If you don’t like the Democratic Primary System that everyone agreed to back in 1980, perhaps you should have voiced your concerns sometime before the exact moment that Hillary realized she was going to lose.

However, Obama still carried the most states, raised the most money, won the most in every delegate count – pledged and super – and won the most votes assuming you’re not so dishonest as to discount half of Michigan and all caucuses.

So you’re dick out of luck. Obama won. Black for President. *sticks out tongue* *giant raspberry* And you can’t have the VP slot either. Nya-nya-nya.

I think she handled this ending pretty decently, to be honest. She fluffed up her own accomplishments on Tuesday so she could walk out not as a loser. She deferred to her voters what she should do (even though they have no say, they get to feel as though they have a say) and 3 days makes it look like it was HER decision to end the campaign and not someone else pushing her out. It also gives her supporters time to make that move themselves.

For all those supporters that have seen sexism at every turn, having Clinton end the campaign not at the time of her choosing would only give them more to take offense with. By making it her choice, it’ll be easier to bring the party together.

Her speech last night was odd in some respects but pretty good overall. If she can go out and say that she’s fighting for them and then say that Obama is the best way to do that, there really can’t be any better outcome, really. And that’s what has been set up here.

I think she just needed a chance to collect her thoughts about what she wants for her legacy. Really- I think the way she kept going all this time is she would not let herself consioder the possibilty of concession – she put her fingers in herears, said La, la, la, and ran like hell from one event to the next. Now she needs a good nights sleep and decide if she is a soldier or a spoiler.

The answer will be soldier – she will do her duty – and maybe be rewarded with a cabinent post

Martin, you can’t be serious. On the night the Democratic nominee was decided, an historic night for African-Americans (and I think progressives too), she called the whole process into question and tried to delegitimize his victory using out-and-out lies about the popular vote and suggesting all of her votes weren’t being counted. She refused to acknowledge his crossing the threshhold necessary for victory and she left the entire process in limbo, including not telling her surrogates how to proceed.

You can strike all the magnaminous chords you feel need to be heard but it just fucking reeks. She handled it ALMOST as poorly as possible. I say “almost” because my prediction had her yelling “On to the convention in August!” and somehow she missed this line on the teleprompter.

A Clinton campaign insider has released a partial list of Hillary’s demands:

    Payment of her campaign debt.
Obama’s campaign to hire Bill as a consultant at one-million dollars, plus expenses, per month.
Vice President, with the proviso that Congress will change the title to “The Other President.”
Chelsea to named Secretary of Commerce.
Bill to receive life-time membership in the D.C. Gentleman’s Club and twenty thousand dollars in one-dollar bills.

    June 4, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Obama team signaled that they will not be having Clinton on the ticket. They are using Bill’s business dealings as one reason!

Also, From the front page of the daily kos, Obama took Liebershit to the woodshed today in the senate:

[D]uring a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

I agree with the fuckhead. She had an opportunity to to out on a high note on Tuesday, having fought the fight to the end, but now acknowledging the results, putting party before herself and bringing everyone together on a historic night. It could have been a powerful call for unity, and it would have put egg on all Clinton-cynic’s faces. Now she’s only leaving after Hilary Rosen wrote an opinion pieces saying she blew it, after Charlie Rangell said she was putting supporters in a bind for no good reason, after Rendell came out and criticized the brinkmanship over the VP slot. So contrary to what you said, doing this way makes it look like she’s being metaphorically dragged out, which I imagine is actually what’s happening. Plus we still don’t know what she’ll say on Friday. I’m hoping this will be the time she congratulates and starts to support the elected nominee full-heartedly, rather than another attempt to tell us she actually got more votes than him. I hope so, but I’m sure not betting on it. And in any event, she missed an opportunity on Tuesday.

    Michael D.:

I don’t know why she has to wait till Friday…

Because Clinton likes to deliver bad new on Friday?

    No, wait, that’s the Bushes.

Ok, seriously, Clinton apparently came to the decision today, likely after much pressure from her supporters and major donors. Clinton, the DNC, and the Obama camp all want to make this a graceful exit for Clinton that helps unite the party around Obama. That means it also needs to be very, very public.

So, they’re all negotiating what Hillary will say, where the event will be held, what kind of coverage they want, backdrop, etc. Taking a day to organize all of that brings us to Thurday, add another day for speechwriting and final negotiations and we’re at Friday.

That’s probably about the quickest this could have happened under the circumstances, especially booking a neutral indoor NYC venue large enough for several hundred people in less than 24 hours.

So that’s why Friday. Not that surprising really. The Clinton’s probably would have preferred a little more time, say Monday or Tuesday, but I’m sure the party and the Obama campaign pressed for a Friday presser to close this out before the weekend – just to prevent it from being an unresolved topic for the Sunday news shows.

I’m hoping this will be the time she congratulates and starts to support the elected nominee full-heartedly, rather than another attempt to tell us she actually got more votes than him.

Even if she endorses, she’s still gonna have twenty more minutes of words about herself because that is what is important here. And to that end, she’s still going to perpetrate the myth that she won by some metric or another, which is total bullshit.

Everyone keeps expecting better of her like there’s ever been any evidence of a better side to her.

How can I make this easy enough for you to get? IT DOESN’T MATTER IF THERE IS ANY TRUTH TO THE IMPLICATION. The Implication alone is enough to feed the story for a few weeks, by which time you’ll have your next scandal. And so on, all the way to November.

No, sorry. Hillary is the one who killed Hillary’s chances in the first place. She did it to herself. I have never in my almost 60 years seen such a badly run, self-defeating campaign. Furthermore, she was transparently dishonest and she pandered to the worst in human nature. Republicans may love that behavior and even some Democrats, but most Democrats don’t. I say let McBu$h enjoy his broom closet sized crowds for at least the next three months. Nothing like rubbing the lack of Republican support in their faces for awhile, and the press would have a blast contrasting the differences between the candidates and their supporters.

I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that particular piece of rhetoric was part of the negotiations, as in:

“Don’t. Just don’t do it again. We know it’s a lie, you know it’s a lie. Mention it again, and you get nothing. And no, that’s not a promise of reward, it’s a guarantee of punishment. Just don’t go there and we can talk about the other stuff. Go there, and we don’t.”

According to Olbermann’s crew, Clinton’s staff was so dismayed after last night they had to get the eight Senators who are Hillary’s top supporters to stage an intervention in order to persuade her to stand down. Theory is, the Clintons as a team are so worked up they can’t see straight, to put it nicely.

And I’ll go to gracious mode after I see the actual endorsement.

Meanwhile, No IQ is up and running again. No video yet, but Susan has posted a group photo from 2004 featuring Michelle Obama and Mrs. Farrakhan in the same frame, and Larry’s making more claims about his vid. The thread’s incredibly racist and vile. No mention of the Sun Goddess’s projected abdication.

    Obama is at halftime.

I’m a sucker for sports metaphors. We could also say that Obama won Game 7 and made it to the finals.

If Jeralyn is throwing in the towel that graciously, that’s a sign that people will come around. There were always people on both sides who were going to be intransigent and start trouble if the other candidate was nominated.

They don’t represent the party — you vote for principles and agenda, not a person. Voting for a candidate doesn’t mean anything unless you talk about the thing behind the candidate — but once you talk about that, you’re no longer talking about the candidate but the things that you believe in. So the only question now is: do you believe in what John McCain represents, or do you believe in what Barack Obama represents? Many of us were Edwards supporters or Dodd supporters, but that’s not where we’re at anymore.

The holdouts can’t do anything now but leave, so let’s not play that game, huh?

The olive branch is out there. That’s the right way to do it. It’s game time. We’re here to win and to fix things, not apologize for what we believe. We’ve done that enough.

    I mentioned that.

    (a) Compared to the comments there two weeks ago, that’s an Obama love-fest.

    (b) People have been flocking to TalkLeft for a while based on their hatred of Obama, not their agreement with Jeralyn or BTD, though both have fanned the flames (or just let them burn) at times.

The comments there are just a bunch of semi-anonymous Internet folks in an echo-chamber. The bellwethers are the people accountable for what they say, Jeralyn and BTD, who both said some pretty crazy things in the last few months but have been doing a furious walkback in recent days.

We don’t need to kowtow to the serious deadenders. All we need is for a good portion of the Clinton supporters to accept the olive branch, not every single one. The fact that Jeralyn’s taking such a conciliatory position before Clinton even concedes indicates to me that reasonable people can be won back effectively as long as Clinton doesn’t drive the wedge deeper.

In looking at the TalkLeft.com commenters and watching John Cole pitch a fit these last few months, I do think one thing needs to be pointed out about this whole sordid situation…

Hillary is 61 years old, right? If I were her, and I saw a guy as dynamic, passionate, vibrant, competent… yadda yadda yadda… as Barack Obama, you have to consider that if Barack turns out to be the kind of President we all hope he is, then he’s going to be in there for 8 years. Hillary’s next shot would *not* be in 2012, it would be in 2016 when she is 69.

All one has to do is look at John McCain to see how well it works out when you run that close to being 70 years old. It’s not easy, nor pretty, nor is it at all the same as when you are 60. In other words, this is probably it for her. She fought so hard, tooth and nail, and all that, because I think she had to if she ever wanted a real shot at it. For better or worse.

Not justifying, condoning her behavior or tactics or whatever… But it is something to consider to provide subtext to what has been transpiring the last few months.

I truly believe this coming Friday really is the last we’ll see of the Clintons in the forefront of politics in this country. It’s going to be over for real this time, and if we’re lucky, Jeb Bush will never get a shot at the White House ever due to the grubbing the GOP is about to take in the general election.

I fully expect Hillary to tear up during her speech on Friday as it becomes real for her that this is it, and I probably will as well since this political era, the one from 1988 to 2008, will finally be over.

The filly that finished behind Big Brown in the Preakness was a beauty. She had stature (17 hands) and a no-quit spirit. She was loved, especially by her trainer, Larry Johnson, and her owners, and all the stable hands.
When she broke down with two fractured cannon bones a quarter mile past the finish line, it was heart breaking.
Eight Belles ran her heart out.
Her death has been a topic with PETA and their continued attacks on thoroughbred horse racing.

I think she handled this ending pretty decently, to be honest. She fluffed up her own accomplishments on Tuesday so she could walk out not as a loser.

But she is a loser. She lost. Her main accomplishment now is that she failed to win the Democratic Party nomination.

She deferred to her voters what she should do (even though they have no say, they get to feel as though they have a say) and 3 days makes it look like it was HER decision to end the campaign and not someone else pushing her out.

She’s not Jesus Christ. Does anyone really think that her campaign is going to resurrect on the 3rd day?

    Queixada Says:

She’s “suspending” her campaign on SATURDAY.

    Big difference.

I told you people that I would believe it when I saw it. But now I tire of this Lucy/Charlie Brown bullshit:

I promise I’m going to concede! Ooops. I lied, sucker. Maybe next time.

Sorry. The only thing that matters here now is Clinton’s unconditional surrender. If she wants to talk about the issues that are important to her, she should do so as a Senator, not as the pretender to the nomination.

Until she concedes, releases her delegates, begins to actively campaign for Obama, and implores her supporters to move to the Obama camp, she is nothing more than a pathetic nuisance making a fool of herself. Full mockery rules apply until she capitulates.

    The Grand Panjandrum Says:

My point is that our candidate won. What the Clinton supporters do is up to them. We have no control over how they comport themselves. What we do have control over is how we conduct ourselves. Let Clinton and her supporter grieve.

Clinton and her supporters whine about supposed sexism, but behave like a bunch of weak sisters who are going to succumb to the vaports if they are not treated like frail little flowers.

Imagine if in the 1860s, General Roberta E. Lee told General Eula S. Grant, “Well, I just don’t know if I can surrender today. I have to ask my supporters to send me a telegraph asking me what I should do. Come back in about 3 days and I will tell you whether I am ready to surrender or if I might just suspend hostilities for a spell. Oh, fiddle dee dee, I just don’t know what to do. But I really commend you on kicking my ass.”

But even a Eula S. Grant’s reply would be direct and to the point: “I said, unconditional surrender, asshole.”

The loser does not dictate the terms. Ever. Apparently, Clinton is further subverting her own VP dreams by definitively demonstrating that she does not know how to give up, and does not know how to make her own wishes subservient to that of the presidential nominee, Obama, or the Democratic Party platform.

I think it’s sad that the night that Obama officially won the nomination– breaking all kinds of historical and cultural barriers– was spent focusing inordinately on Hillary’s faux victory speech.

Hillary had an opportunity to really shine, to be gracious, to have an inspirational speech about the importance of a united party, of democratic values– but she didn’t.

Ironically, if she HAD done so it might have given some in the party who have lingering doubts about Obama a moment of PAINFUL LAST MINUTE DOUBT. Because Hillary sees the big picture, she’s magnanimous, and that it’s not just about HER. If she really wanted to stick it to the party she should have behaved incredibly gracefully PRESIDENTIAL— instead she gave people one more reason to believe that Obama was the better choice.

While I think that Obama’s supporters should have a place to vent about her last few days of trying to fight for the spotlight– we should also get over it. Quickly. Make it your mission to be KIND to Hillary supporters. They lost. There is no dignity in rubbing it in their faces; it also doesn’t help Obama win.

I should make at least my statements clear. When I attack Hillary (specifically Hillary’s behavior) I am only talking about her. Not her supporters. I have nothing but affection, and sympathy, to Hillary supporters who will (eventually) vote for the Democratic ticket in Novemeber.

It is weird, though, that an attack on Hillary should be considered an attack on her supporters. They are two different entities. And I want to make a rule, a pledge, maybe a cute symbol to put on top of each posting, that an attack on Hillary (based on her shameless, disturbing behavior) should be seen as that alone.

You’ve got it backwards. It is Hillary and her supporters who have to get over it. Quickly.

Again, some are trying to make a political campaign into some kind of diva-fest psychodrama, apparently because Hillary and many of her supporters are women, while simultaneously decrying the sexist way that Hillary supposedly was treated.

But no one suggested that Huckabee’s supporters needed a period to mourn their loss, or that anyone had to tread carefully lest Mitt Romney’s supporters feel that their faces were rubbed in it.

No, it was, “McCain is the nominee. Get on board the train.”

Meanwhile, McCain isn’t simply letting Clinton supporters have time to sort out their feelings (McCain reaches out to disgruntled Clinton supporters):

McCain, the senator from Arizona who has wrapped up his party’s White House nomination, moved on Wednesday to woo women and other Clinton backers whose disappointment over her defeat by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama could cause them to switch teams.

“I would welcome any of Senator Clinton’s supporters’ vote,” McCain told reporters in Louisiana, adding he would seek backing from people across the political spectrum.

While Clinton is pouting in her tent like an Achilles, McCain is actively encouraging her supporters to defect.

Clinton needs to put a stop to it. And her supporters need to stop acting like nervous nellies at a prom, and behave like grown men and women in the midst of a political campaign that can reshape years of wrongheaded domestic and foreign policy.

The game is officially on. There are two teams. Choose one. is one team that matters and that is Team Obama. Join. Fight. Repeat until November.

    Fixed.

That’t the truly bizarre part about all of this—how many “hillbots” are REAL Hillary supporters and not just “Operation Chaos” operators? What if blogs like CB have become the GOP’s special version of Second Life?

That is the danger that Hillary ignored. She has entangled her supporters with the Operation Chaos players and other freelancing wingnuts, probably for the noise advantage the loudmouths would give her campaign. In doing so, she has made it impossible to really tell who is a hard core supporter and who is a ratfucker. If anything, Hillary has weakened the voices of her real supporters by allowing this environment to thrive and develop.

That is one great thing about Obama, the right hates him so much that it wouldn’t occur to them to join up with his campaign to sabotage it from inside. They may hate Hillary, but she ain’t Obama. They despise him, and have flocked to her because they see her as the weaker candidate.

The quality of a Democratic presidential candidate is easily detected by the level of rancor from the right. Using that as a measure, it is clear that Obama is a fine candidate. The right are scared shitless of him, to the point of supporting Hillary. That’s scared. ;)

They will argue otherwise, but cruising the comments sections of the right wing sites shows that they are afraid. Afraid that their inner racists are going to come out of the woodwork.

Good. I want to see them stand up and be counted. As Republicans.

The game is officially on. There are two teams. Choose one. Fight. Repeat until November.

I like to think that I am in a subset of one team, and we are known as ‘Special Teams’. When the need arises, we get to do the dirty dancing so others can keep their hands clean.

Until the former First Lady sings her swan song, we keep dancing. But I will exercise a bit more caution about who I choose to ‘dance’ with. ;)

Once she finishes singing, the music stops. But it better be a real pretty song or the music will start right back up, and we won’t be the ones who crank it back up.

I’ve done an informal survey of the leading pro-Hillary blogs that I’m aware of, to see how they’re taking the defeat.

On the side of total gibbering insanity, we have (not too surprisingly) No Quarter and Hillary Is 44, both of which are hilariously worthless. Hillary is 44 has infamously demanded when Obama will concede. Larry Johnson is continuing to sort of push his stupid “Michelle Obama Whitey tape” scandal, and there’s a whole ton of obnoxious other shit there, as well.

Corrente is in a state of somewhat more contemplative insanity, but seems nonetheless on the loony side of the spectrum – lots of wondering why Clinton has to concede now, and such.

Taylor Marsh, perhaps not too surprisingly, does seem to be the Limbaugh of the left. Pretty quick acceptance that Obama is the nominee and going on the attack against McCain. All the insanity is certainly not forgiven, though.

Talk Left seems also to be dealing with the pain. I’m not sure how to interpret Armando, who’s claimed for months now that he supports Obama, but Jeralyn seems to be reaching the acceptance stage – although still some weird ideas, like how it’d be a slap in the face for Obama to pick another woman as his running mate.

My DD has reached a point where it is no longer evident that they were ever a pro-Clinton site at all – Armstrong is not posting too much, and Beeton jumped ship a while ago, I think (after Indiana/North Carolina?)

I’m not going to look at the comments. One assumes there’s still a lot of dead enders at all those places (I did see a commenter at No Quarter noting that s/he’d just come over from Taylor Marsh, because Marsh had become an apostate to the cause.) But are there really that many of them?

I give it two weeks or so and pretty much everyone will be pretty fully back in the fold. It’ll be tricky dealing with the VP thing, but I think time is against the “dream ticket” – after a few weeks, most people won’t really care if Clinton’s the running mate. Rendell points the way forward on that – Clinton can’t blackmail Obama into making her his running mate.

I assume the Hillary is 44 people will never give up, and Larry Johnson’s just a lunatic, but I think we’ll see a pretty big swell of unity over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the report. It’s good to hear that things may calm down soon.

I’m sorry to hear, though, the concept that a female VP is a slap to the face or whatever of the Clinton supporters. A true feminist, I’d wager, would support a qualified female VP.

I wonder if there aren’t Republican ratfuckers posing as ultra-obnoxious Obama supporters online, though, to try to make Obama look bad. There was some discussion along these lines over at Sadly, No! It amuses me to think that the big Obot vs. Hillarhoid scrap is really just two different groups of ratfuckers snarling at each other with no actual Democrats involved. Pretty soon maybe that’s what it will really be.

I have no doubt that there are Obama ratfucks, but I think they are far outnumbered by the Hillary ratfucks. I think their focus was to boost Hillary because they too thought that she was going to win it.

I think the right will move more ratfucks over to the Obama camp now in an attempt to tie their acts to Obama. They tried to stay ‘on message’ while ‘supporting’ Hillary, but as her chances dropped their inner wing nut came out.

It would be funny if it came out that not only did the right trash their chances this fall, but they trashed Hillary in trying to save themselves.

Via Americablog, Fineman reported this was what people close to Clinton were saying; don’t you dare choose a woman for a VP if you’re not choosing Hillary. Frankly I think that’s extremely sexist.

Yes it is, but an even bigger problem is that they are trying to put Obama in a lose-lose-lose situation. If Obama wants another woman, they hate him for it. If he puts a man in, they hate him for it. Only giving their girl the spot will pacify them, and yet Obama still loses if he does not want her on the ticket in the first place.

If I was Obama, I would drag the VP process out as long as possible. The further we get from today, the more people will see that Hillary is not a viable choice for Obama as VP. As passions cool, reason will set in with most of her supporters. Her more ardent supporters will be able to be better reasoned with, so if Obama finds a truly top notch candidate then they will be more likely to accept his choice.

On Saturday Senator Hillary Clinton will be endorsing Barack Obama from Vice President Cheney’s Bunker. Hillary believes this really demonstrates she is ready to serve as Vice President on day one.

I’m very nice to my mother, but she never called me a sexist pig because I preferred Obama.

I propose we stick to the normal rules for interaction on the Intertoobz. Dickwads get treated like dickwads. Non-dickwads are not treated like dickwads.* Interactions that require the amount of finesse needed to soothe what might be a non-dickwad who is acting like a dickwad because his feelings are hurt and his candidate lost should be conducted in a non-electronic environment.

    See how easy that is?

Forget Taylor Marsh and Talk Left, for hair pulling and gnashing of teeth at it’s finest go to Hillary’s official blog.

Her latest blog entry has over 1251 comments and just about all of them are anti-Obama rants. It’s an ocean of misery except for the occasional ray of sunshine with some kind words for Hillary and that champion of Democratic Party principles, John McCain. They just love the old bastard over there so much that the only ones who are saying they’ll vote in November are voting for him.

    Link

Funny, you’d think a Democrats official site wouldn’t be a place to openly promote Republicans for President. I guess it shows what a uniter Hillary is.
