Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Let’s finish the job.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

You cannot shame the shameless.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

I really should read my own blog.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

We still have time to mess this up!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

This post is in: Media, General Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

If Doug Feith didn’t exist, Fox News would have the fucking stupidest commentators on the face of the Earth.

***Update***

Egads. I said a long time ago, and I’ll say it again, maybe the best thing that Obama could do for the race issue is expose the festering ids that would normally stay buried if a black guy wasn’t about to become President of the freaking United States. It’s like lancing a deep festering wound to let the pus out. Eventually the haters will have had their say, and Obama will still be President, and they won’t have anything more to add to the conversation. Then the best possible resolution will come to the American race discussion as far as I’m concerned: we’ll get tired of it and talk about something else.

Biology isn’t destiny. For chrissakes, there is more genetic diversity in sub-Saharan Africa than in the rest of the world combined. Lumping all black people into a single category reifies a phenomenon that doesn’t exist. It pre-validates the assumptions of morally reprehensible people who represent the tradition of intolerance and slavery. The only reason the category has any practical meaning is because every single American with African descent still gets followed around at Macy’s. In the same way that it will thrill me when we stop validating extremist neocon frames with words like ‘islamofascist,’ I dream of the day when a ‘national conversation on race’ doesn’t perpetuate the wrong side of the argument by taking what should be disputed points for granted at the outset.

I noticed the other day that, when a Philadelphia Philly makes a good play and returns to the dugout, all the players do that fist thing with him.

Does this mean the Phillies should be sent to Gitmo? Inquiring minds want to know. (Pirates fans need not respond.)

Rush also did this story (I like wingnut radio, it makes me feel smart to identify all the lies and manipulations; must be low self esteem that I pick such easy marks to listen to.) But the Fox version was especially silly, I actually saw it live (I like Fox for the same reason I like wingnut radio.)

    From one of the links:

THE NEXT THING WILL BE A BACKWARD BASEBALL HAT WITH USA FACING TO THE REAR. WILL THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER SOON BE A RAP SONG. (“CDM”)

HA!! that’s just plain funny stuff.

Obama, always dignified and confident(even when he’s shooting hoops), has a casual moment, initiated by his wife, as he steps up to the mic to become the first man of color to accept the nomination of a major political party for POTUS.

Perhaps the dap was slighty off decorum given the historic proportions of the occasion. Perhaps.

His bearing also served him well at the moment in the speech when he claimed that he would be the nominee. As the thunderous applause washed over him, we could see in his face that he was acutely aware of the moment and his place in it, but he held it together.

I was glad to be in the privacy of my home that I could let the tears of joy roll.

Given that our current President talks with his mouth full when talking to foreign heads of state, is prone to giving female heads of state unasked for unwelcome neck rubs, likes to give his finger to the camera when he thinks no one’s watching, is known to use some unimportant person’s sweater when he doesn’t have a cloth handy to clean his glasses, and recently congratulated the pope on his address saying, “Thank you your holiness, awesome speech,” and thinks it’s awesome to bump chests with graduating airforce cadets, I’m not terribly concerned about a little tap. For those of you who are looking for fun because you are bored, the ‘hard core Hill’ sites that are now going for McCain are targets we can open up on with both barrels (figuratively, please!) now. They are openly supporting McCain, and thus they are just as legit a target as any other Republican that is stirring up shit.

I keep an eye on them because it is interesting to try and figure out who is a so-called ‘real’ Democrat and who is the Republican ratfucker. They leave all kinds of clues around, usually mistakenly posting the info and then begging the admin to remove it once they realize it.

If you get bored, there is plenty of good hunting in Right Blogistan. If anything, you will find plenty of insane shit to laugh (or cry) at, you will develop the intolerant attitude I have for these scumbags, and you will enjoy pointing them out to others so they can point and laugh too.

If they are with McCain and raising hell online, they are a target. Lock and load people, it’s a turkey shoot.

It’s been pretty funny reading the comments on Taylor Marsh and TalkLeft, from the sounds of it they’re going to lose a lot of traffic with their conversion to *gasp* Obama. Particularly poignant are the ones leaving to stay away from the gloating Obamabots or some such.

These site fomented this with their over the top rhetoric and tolerance of comments they knew to be factually wrong. Opinions are one thing, blatant untruths should be opposed by the blogger. Note, I didn’t say deleted, I said opposed.

Well, they ran their sites how they did, they’ll wonder why they can’t pull these people back from the edge after actively contributing. I’ve opposed Hillary from before she announced, but you won’t find me out on a fact or letting junk get by in comments. It is easier to keep some kind of an eye on my handful of commenters than on a mess like this one or theirs with 400 comments on a so what post.

The bump and his campaign style in general, for that matter, are both refreshing and successful but let’s consider this in context. As Americans, we’ve just weathered through two terms of easily the worst, most destructive, corrupt and apathetic regime our country has ever experienced. Campaign style and ethnicity aside, how is he really different? Before I get blasted, let me say that I will vote for him over McCain, it’s an easy choice but something bothers me though. Where is the outcry over our trampled constitution? I know, if you want to win against a largely unpopular incumbent then your platform has to be about change. The “hey, I’m totally different than that guy” moniker…blah, blah…but is he really? Is he going to be somehow immune from the influence of the massively entrenched lobbyists? Is he going cast aside the newly grabbed powers of the executive? Is the “war on terror” a political impetus or outright lie that should be rejected? Sadly, I’m no optimist when it comes to presidents. He will fall under the sway of lobbyists because one doesn’t rise to that station without their explicit help. Giving up power, let’s be real, nobody does that. I don’t care if you are POTUS or some small town PTA chairperson, not many people would willingly yield control of anything they are responsible for (unless, of course, it’s a complete pain in the ass and expedient to do so). The “war on terror”, come on, this is classic hero vs villain shit, good vs. evil. Anyone remember the cold war? Politicians live for this shit. So I think that we can safely conclude that our current Middle Eastern xenophobia will continue until another worthy enemy is created. George Orwell, you saw it coming, too bad many of us didn’t. I’ll cast my vote but it won’t be for a much hyped change but rather for a slightly better choice of nuanced criminality.

We can expect to see a lot more of Fox news commentators and right-wing blogs express racial resentment towards Obama.

The reason for this is simple: if you’re an unaccomplished, pathetic, or contemptible person, you’re likely to use race as a measure of validity for your own existence. If all you’ve got to brag about is “Being White” (or Black, or whatever), chances are you don’t have much else to talk about.

Since Obama challenges these racial stereotypes, Obama is far scarier to the bigots than he would be if he reinforced the stereotypes.

Judging a man by his color is a mistake, and making a big deal out of a fist pound is just an attempt at race-baiting to the older, out-of-touch whites that make up Fox news’ demographic.

Race is front and center at Hillaryis44. The ‘infamous’ basil9 has this to say:

    To finish my self-implosion.
    LADIES!
This time we have to step aside for an unqualified AA male. This sets a terrible irreversible precedent. Next time we’ll be told we can’t stand in the way of a Hispanic-American nominee, or an Asian nominee, or a woman of any race OTHER than caucasian nominee.

LADIES! Don’t you see where this path leads? Is the real objective the
overturning of women’s rights? I’m sorry but HRC caving to BO will adversely affect all women NOT of color.

Not an unqualified male, but rather an ‘unqualified AA male’! Oh woe is we, it’s the ‘Big Black Attack’! The racism drips from posts like this, and this kind of asshole wants us to believe that they are not voting for Obama because he is unqualified, but the real reason is there for all to see. If people let Obama get away with this, next time it will be a hispanic, asian or heaven forbid, someone not white!

As a rule, I don’t like to wish ill will on people but these racist assholes are the exception to that rule. What I hope happens to them is unprintable, even here.

I dream of the day when a ‘national conversation on race’ doesn’t perpetuate the wrong side of the argument by taking what should be disputed points for granted at the outset

And vice versa – what should be taken for granted at the outset disputed.

You can’t convince some people that racism isn’t some distant memory – they believe at base that whatever problem remains is a black problem, not a white problem, and thus not their problem. You can’t convince some people that their success isn’t entirely due to their own wonderfulness and they won’t believe it has anything to do with having white skin. And these are not really ill-meaning people either, but they are let us say *unreliable* about race.

These are the people who keep me up at night. They are this season’s “swing” voters, I think. God help us all.

My suspicion runs the other way: it’s because so few of the Macy’s shoppers are aware of their African ancestry.
