Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

This blog will pay for itself.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

This really is a full service blog.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Come on, man.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans in disarray!

John Scalzie presents:

“Fox News Would Like To Take a Moment To Remind You That the Obamas Are As Black As Satan’s Festering, Baby-Eating Soul”

I keep forgetting to add Scalzi to the permanent links. This time I will not, and I still remember how much I love this Scalzi post about Huckabee’s ridiculous covenant marriage nonsense.

    That post is awesome!

Michelle Malkin will continue to make excuses for Fox News’ dog-whistling racism that expose the fact that she’s about as familiar with logical thinking as a rainbow trout is with knitting,

I busted a gut on that one!

When Obama becomes prez, its gonna be very strange having a news network throwing out racist jabs at our president. That is, assuming they continue to do so. Which, I assume they will.

    Let’s see:

    1) Belittle Michelle Obama. Check!

    2) Piss off blacks with carefree racism. Check!

    3) Ensure that Faux Noise will be considered a legitimate news source around the time that Hell freezes over, global warming notwithstanding. Check, check, check!

Maybe us Dems should simply start giving 5 dollars every time there’s a bunch of crap like this. Then someone push a story that everytime Fox makes a flub like that Obama’s fundraising triples.

It’s odd that Fox would seek to remind people that Obama is black. If, as JC says, it would be unnecessary to remind people that John McCain is an irascible old coot, it would be that much less necessary to remind people that Obama is black. It gains you no more racist votes and pisses off everybody else.

My only surprise is that they haven’t rerun the Jesse Helms “Hands” commercial yet. They’ve practically set the table for that one.

The upshot of these attacks is that it is bringing back the women voters. I have a die-hard Clinton fan friend who was considering not voting for Obama, but the Michelle Obama attacks have her so enraged she is considering volunteering for Obama’s campaign! (LOL that didn’t take long).

    Dear BrightHouse Networks:

Please remove FOX News from my cable service.

I would like that channel removed from my service because:
    1) The channel has a history of being incorrect and ill-informed;
    2) The channel has, within the last week and a half, gone out of its way to insult people;
    3) The channel does not contribute in any positive way to the national dialog.

If you do not remove FOX News from my service within the next 2-4 weeks, I will have no choice but to cancel my service with you altogether. I’d prefer to keep my ESPN and my SciFi and my Cartoon Network, but I feel strongly enough about getting FOX News off the air that I am willing to drop my favorite channels.

    Signed.

Even as a propaganda republican channel fox news sucks. Who can they possibly appeal to with this kind of stuff. They already have the racist vote. Do they think that independents and pissed off Hillary voters will look at this and go “Michelle Obama Black Ho- I have to vote John McCain”.
Republicans used to be better than this. Their racism use to be much more subtle. This is the party which succeeded in putting a racist black guy on the supreme court for goodness sakes!
But as in every other area republicans have become completely inept and incompetent. Next thing you know fox news anchors will start reading the news in white hoods.

You’d almost think the Democrats seeded the “conservative” movement with moles to make them appear as ridiculous and hateful (and stupid) as possible. As though they wanted a crazy, scorched earth policy to mark the collapse of the movement.

I just cant believe a ‘News’ Network would run a byline like that. Ok, I’ve been brought up on BBC News, but it was stunning to imagine that image on a couple of million tv’s in US without the Broadcasting standards jumping all over that.

I know that people in Europe can stereotype americans as lazy, but damn, to merge Jerry Springer and 24hour News into one program to avoid housewives the effort of changing channels.. surely thats going too far.

Well, yeah. I just thought it was interesting to note. The party of the South inevitably becomes the party of religious zealotry and racial/sexual/cultural bigotry. Democrat, Republican. That’s not your problem. It’s the freak’n Southerners. George Bush was just your average Conneticut cokehead with dreams of becoming baseball commissioner before he moved down to Texas to run for Governor. Dick Cheney was your run-of-the-mill draft dodging Yale drop-out before he became CEO of Houston-based Halliburton.

Clearly the problem isn’t the politicians, it’s the South itself. Something in the water or the soil that drives people into power-mad xenophobic hyper-deistic fits of war-mongering rage and stupidity.

I mean, the problem is pretty clear. The South. The solution should be equally clear and consistent with American practice in regards to rogue states. Carpet bomb everything south of the Mason-Dixion line. It’s the only way.

I can’t get rid of this mental image of seeing the FOX news anchors after the camera goes off…

Anchor: When we return. Michelle Obama, is his baby mamma merely crazy or does she actually hate America? Also we have more pictures to show of Barrack from his trip to Kenya.
    Producer: OK, cut to commercial.
Anchor: Are we off the air now?
    Producer: Yup! here’s your pillow.
    Anchor: Thanks!
    *Anchor plants face into pillow*
Anchor: *muffled* C*ON!! JUNGLE BUNNY!! N*GGER!!
Anchor: Phew! That was a close one today.

Not to be cliche, but if you go and check out the Democrats 60 years ago, you’ll notice they were worse.

Well, 60 years ago pretty much everyone was. Some people made an effort to progress, and others didn’t. I’m glad to be a part of a group of people trying to move forward to a better place.

I’ve been reading Tavris and Aronson’s book “Mistakes were made, but not by me,” which I believe someone at BJuice recommended. It goes into the psychology of denial and crazy devotion to insane positions.

Clearly the problem isn’t the politicians, it’s the South itself. Something in the water or the soil that drives people into power-mad xenophobic hyper-deistic fits of war-mongering rage and stupidity.

Based on Tavris and Aronson’s argument, racism in the South and a lot of current white resentment is fed by the knowledge, deep down inside, that the South and white America were evil in their treatment of blacks, and since no one wants to see themselves as evil, then the solution for some weak-minded sorts is to convince themselves that blacks deserved that treatment because they are subhuman, violent, stupid, etc. Or that it’s the whites that are somehow the victim in the deal (see Ferraro). It seems crazy from the outside, but makes sense as a pathological attempt to overcome cognitive dissonance.

Check out the book–it’s a great read!

There’s an easy way for FAUX to establish their “Fair and Balanced” cred. The next time they do a piece on Cindy McCain, the chyron at the bottom of the screen could call her whatever the rodeo slang is for ‘drug-addicted homewrecker’.

Roger Ailes used to chair the RNC back in the 1970s. He was then hired by Jack Welch to rebuild the NBC news division to Welch’s exact specifications. This was well before Rupert Murdoch was even thinking of starting a cable news network.

So, no, Roger Ailes has no shame or ethical bones, and his brains have been put to evil use.

Ah, yes, the initial wave of attacks to “niggerize” the Obamas, and, whereas one cannot racially attack the (black) candidate without drawing obloquy from even the most racially insensitive of political observers and members of the public, nothing says one cannot use the (black) spouse as a surrogate. So, get ready for “he’s a black man, but she’s a nigger” slur-mongering, bet on it.
