Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

I really should read my own blog.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Let’s finish the job.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

We still have time to mess this up!

He really is that stupid.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

We’re not at war with Iran yet. That’s a happy thought. An even happier one is I don’t think we will start anything with Iran. If I’m wrong I blame Sy Hersh for crying wolf two years ago or so.

The Second Amendment to the Constitution:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Conservative justices are strict constructionists, my ass. If you don’t like what the Founding Fathers wrote, just stike the part you disagree with. Activist bastards.

Happy thoughts? The DoJ is out almost $6 and six zeros* and we still have no idea who is behind the anthrax attacks.

The Justice Department agreed yesterday to pay biological-weapons expert Steven J. Hatfill a settlement valued at $5.85 million to drop a lawsuit he filed after then-Attorney General John D. Ashcroft named him a “person of interest” in the investigation of the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks.

*Not including the cost of the investigation.

Just got done watching “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead,” which I had to Tivo because I’ve been out of town. So that’s actually 3 happy thoughts: 2 whiz-bang Dr. Who episodes and wonderful digital technology being used for peaceful, personal amusement purposes, while drinking some truly excellent home brew from one of my coworkers.

I also had the foresight to Tivo “Dark Knight,” so the next happy thought involves Batman. Original Lee +2.

I picked up some fine music this week:

    – Fleet Foxes: strains of the Beach Boys and David Crosby and maybe English folk music. Very interesting;

    – Calexico “The Black Light” (1998). A great soundtrack for cruising across the Southwest.

Both on vinyl; makes me happy!

I will soon sell my well fortified compound our in the high desert of New Mexico so we can move to our farm in Vermont. Both states are great for gun ownerships but if NM seceded from the Union it would be the Third Largest Nuclear Power in the World. I guess I’ll take my chances and hope like hell that I am still protected in the land of DFH’s, civil unions, and organic farmers. Jesus Babbling Christ, I’m going to carry a firearm to the growers market so I don’t feel to emasculated.

I’ve been watching Babylon 5 on dvd, which is a great series especially once you get past Season 1. I’d started watching rather late when it was on the air, around the middle of Season 4, so didn’t quite get the full impact. It’s a fun series if you’re into the decline of governments into fascism and the heroic resistance against same, together with all sorts of various and sundry aliens.

The Vision channel is playing “Quantum Leap” reruns. I forgot how much I loved that show. My favorite episodes were ones where Sam had to be a woman. There’s just something about Scott Bakula trying to manuver around in heels that brings a smile to my face.

You can find some really odd programming choices on the Vision channel sometimes.

I got to moon George Bush one time.

Granted, I had my pants on.

And I was in a stadium with 10,000 other people.

Don’t care. Got to bend over all the way and point my rear end at him in a major way.

On NPR’s Day To Day, Williams, serving as NPR’s news analyst, said the following:

Bob Novak, the Washington columnist, had a piece this week in which he said that Colin Powell might endorse Barack Obama down the line. So, I spoke with some people close to Colin Powell who said they didn’t think that was going to happen; but then the question came: what about the possibility of McCain picking Powell as his running mate? And you imagine Powell as an older, more experienced, less risky version of Obama. Colin Powell might be the secret ingredient that would get McCain in a much better position going into the fall election.

Shorter Juan Williams: Black People Are Practically Interchangeable.

(For anyone who’s not aware of how Juan Williams transformed himself from a soporific, bland, and useless host of NPR’s Talk Of The Nation in the mid-90’s into an absolute sycophant of the Fox News Right and utter tool, last year’s On The Media story is a pretty good example.)

    WTF can you say?

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama’s political success might claim an unintended victim: affirmative action, a much-debated policy that he supports.

Already weakened by several court rulings and state referendums, affirmative action now confronts a challenge to its very reason for existing. If Americans make a black person the leading contender for president, as nationwide polls suggest, how can racial prejudice be so prevalent and potent that it justifies special efforts to place minorities in coveted jobs and schools?

Yahoo headline stories are a blogging gold mine.

    Unbelievable

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — In the last two months, Taliban militants have suddenly tightened the noose on this city of three million people, one of Pakistan’s biggest, establishing bases in surrounding towns and, in daylight, abducting residents for high ransoms.

Taliban militants prepared on Friday to execute two men in Bajur, having accused them of helping the United States to carry out a missile strike. One of the men was decapitated.

The militants move unchallenged out of the lawless tribal region, just 10 miles away, in convoys of heavily armed, long haired and bearded men. They have turned up at courthouses in nearby towns, ordering judges to stay away. On Thursday they stormed a women’s voting station on the city outskirts, and they are now regularly kidnapping people from the city’s bazaars and homes. There is a feeling that the city gates could crumble at any moment.

This is the most remarkable, and scary, thing I have read in years. The implications are staggering. I know this city well, and its surrounding regions. If things are as bad as this – the first time I have seen anything in the Western press to even talk about it – then what have we been doing the past 7 fucking years? Beyond belief.
