Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

No one could have predicted…

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

People are weird.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Rosebud.

*** Update ***

BTW- my mother and brother were at this game last night, and because they are masochists, they did not leave when it was 10-4 St. Louis.

Lucky them, as the Pirates won 12-11 in the tenth.

Let’s hope Bob Schieffer has finally let go of his McCain pearls today. Not that I’m gonna watch or anything.

With all of the McFuddled screwups this week, did I miss it? I never saw mention from John Cole over the naming of the Steelers line-up during imprisonment. Everyone knows the line-ups of those famed mid-60’s Steeler teams. I bet even Cole couldn’t name a player from those teams.

Right now I’m watching Battlefield Detectives: Tet Offensive. There is no way the Vietnam War could have come out the way we wanted it to because we did not know our enemy. Does McCain know our enemy in Iraq now?

I walked into the bar. It was 8-3. I left again. I have not yet figured out who is responsible for this meltdown.

Jason Isringhausen was involved. Therefore he is responsible. I disclaim all responsibility for not davening Maariv like I was supposed to.

But the Ramban says that the interpretation which Rashi gives of “[Balaam] turned his face towards the wilderness” is not in Targum Onkelos the way Rashi gives you to understand.

From this mornings Chris Matthews show via Crooks and Liars.

Howard, is this a fair problem for people to be worried about, staff shakeups, firing people, layering people, bringing in new bosses to run the campaign?

FINEMAN: Well, John McCain is not a systems thinker. He’s a leader by personal will and force of personality. He’s gathered a sort of constellation of people around him. Nobody ever actually leaves the orbit, it’s just different planets fly closer at different times.

The biggest lie about Vietnam and Iraq is not that so much we failed to know our enemies in each (and we have failed in the that) but failed to know our chief ally, which are the people and government in the country your fighting to save.

If your chief ally is not squarely on your side and committed to winning and to sacrifice for their cause then it’s a wasted effort. Whether it’s from denial, arrogance, or plain stupidity, it should have been obvious to prudent people the ancient history of the Iraq region and it’s ancient hatreds. Pacifying this part of the world had been attempted many times by occupying foreign armies only to end in wasted lives and ultimate failure. The same could be said about Vietnam.

No love for Cynthia McKinney? A Liberal Democratic black woman gets the nomination for president from a national political party and no one bothers to note or comment on this historic occasion? For shame.

    Congratulations, Cynthia! You go, girl!

Perchance, if Obama loses the election, will Cole be blogging at +35 the day after? (I think I’ll be doing EVERYTHING at +35 if the unthinkable happens.)

In parting, an Irish drinking joke that I made up:

Q: How can one tell that Bushmills is a Protestant whiskey?

A: Because instead of making one drunk, it just causes polite clapping.

Thanks, I’ll be here all week.

Much love to my fellow Lutherans! LOL

Order is restored to the universe since Jason Isringhausen did not get to pitch and may be exiled to ANWR
