[…] If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!Betcha hardly any of y’all were folo-readers back on Thanksgiving (the Scruggs bust still six days in the future), when I gave a shout-out to the cartoons at xkcd.com. Okay, next news: John Cole over at Balloon Juice (along with, apparently, much of the lefty blogosphere) has discovered a Kansan offering homage to xkcd in his ad campaign for state rep. Yesterday they apparently crashed his servers, but you just gotta see Sean Tevis’s boffo Running for Office: It’s Like A Flamewar with a Forum Troll, but with an Eventual Winner — then send him the $8.34! srv
slashdotted.
Sadly No ponders Newsweek’s pardon-everyone scheme.
TheFountainHead
I think we’ve killed his server.
Kevin
I saw a link to his site on the GOS last night, and gave him ten bucks.
MarkusB
Yeah… what TheFountainHead said.
You’ve Slashdotted Juiced the [email protected]!
John Cole
This website will never slashdot anyone. If we generated enough traffic to crash another site, we would be down first.
Wayne T
Couldn’t get the site – what was the pitch?
Punchy
That $8 better buy a new Commadore 64 to run his server, cuz it’s dead.
If he’s a Dem running for state Rep…in KS…good luck. Play the Lotto while you’re at it, Sean.
dave
It’s blowing up on boingboing, digg, and probably elsewhere.
Just too good not to be the talk of the liberal blogosphere.
Dreggas
I know it’s O/T but this is too funny
H/T Reason

This went up on MetaFilter yesterday. Turns out Sean has been a MeFi member for years (but my usernumber is still lower than his, damn it.) He shows up in the thread to discuss his immigration stance and other issues.
Mary
OK, MeFi thread.
Wyrm
I sent that to my wife because I thought it was cool, and it turns out she went to high school with the guy. Small world indeed!
D-Chance.
If nothing else, he’s got a sense of humor.
Svensker
We dun crashed ‘im.
Zifnab
You only say that after being Kos-linked a few too many times. Still, I have a hard time believing he’s running an XKCD political campaign if he can’t keep his box up. Nerd fail.
colleeniem
It’s back up, folks. And up to 1800 donors. The comic is freakin hillarious.
Tax Analyst
Got to his site OK. 1895 donors. Yeah, the comic strip is a hoot. I’m going back to donate.
Punchy
No guarentee that this the same dude, but this came up in a search of the LJWorld.com website. Seems like the guy may have a rapsheet problem:
Granted, that was years ago, but are y’all sure this aint some scam?
Punchy
Ok, found article on the KCStar that makes him look more legit, but his age checks nicely with my above post, so most likely it’s the same Sean Tevis.
So he’s (been a) crook prior to running for office. Bet his oppy will use this nicely against him.
MarkusB
Thanks, John, for fixing my commenting mess. (Funny, the “s” tags works in Preview only, it seems.)
Although Zifnab makes a good point (which I only saw after the fact) about this guy’s geek cred, I did drop a dime on him. I’ll consider it my comment clean-up fee.
MarkusB
And now I see…
I’m going away. No more blogs today. :-P
The Dangerman
OK, since we are linking stick cartoons:
http://www.stickdeath.com/meanhook.htm
Great for golfers; might not be work friendly, but YMMV.
PeterJ
If so, then at least it was funny. :)
Tax Analyst
Oh, well…if true I just gave $8.34 to a crook (or prior crook). However, I can look at is as “cheap entertainment”. Shit, $8.34 won’t even buy 2 gallons of gasoline these days (California prices, I paid 4.499 last night). Later on I had a char-broiled chicken sandwich with small fries & drink and it ran $7.35 ($6.64 after the clerk saw how old and feeble I am and gave me my Senior Citizen Discount).
Krista
The fact that he uses the word “frack” in the cartoon makes me want to give him his $8.
scott
John: Thanks for the heads up on this. There were two diaries over at the GOS that slipped off the radar screen in about .0000048 seconds thus, probably didn’t help him.
He’s in a very conservative area of KS, a large chunk of “What The Matter With Kansas” talks about that very area. OTOH, many of the old school Repups there have switched parties since they really don’t like the fundies calling the shots so who knows, perhaps this guy has a chance.
I kicked in $25. I like this guy more than Obama already. And I say that as a lifelong librul, not some johnny-come-lately-to-the-party like John here. :)
Digital Amish
Rap sheet or no, I like the cut of his jib. (privacy, healthcare, etc.) Plus it appears he is aware of many internet traditions.
Catpain Haddock
If he threw in a “Blergh!” I’d be right there with ya.
Krista
He’s also kind of cute. Which doesn’t hurt.
Face
$26K sounds mysteriously like a gambling debt or new car purchase. Such an odd, random number to collect. Hope it’s legit.
John Cole
Ehh- it is 8 bucks. I drink two less imported beers this week, or not smoke a cigar tomorrow night. Even if it is a scam, I still laughed. Worth it.
John Cole
Punchy- that may very well be the same guy, and got caught making fake id’s in college.
Rikki
He may very well have made my fake id!
Punchy
OT:
Un.fucking.believable. Yes, peeps have the vapors b/c Obama exercises. That’s no typo.
Clearly, the terrorist have won if our President can bench 300lb. I just know the media will report this as “See! Obama does nothing but spin! Multiple times a day! All spinning!”
scott
A diversion agreement:
Diversion Agreement.
Tevis is 39, this happened in 1992 so he was 22 at the time. So yeah, it sounds like the fake id thing. Sheesh, I did a few “minorly illegal” things in college (selling shrooms to my buds) that could have gotten me in similar trouble.

Somebody annotated the Onion’s Bush: ‘Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over’
But even it is missing some of his besterer achievements.

What’s a ‘bleg’?
Dreggas
Forget the New Yorker…this is bad
Granted I frequent T-shirt hell but what that guy is selling is wrong.
Original Lee
Tevis has over 2300 donors already. It would be so cool if he hit his deadline. BTW, $26,000 is probably a state or local limit of some kind, or it could be that they have a pretty good idea how much his opponent has and are asking for a little bit more than that.
Is selling fake IDs a misdemeanor? I’m not sure felons can hold public office in KS.
scott
To Teh Google!
Bleg: A blog where one asks for donations; a cross between blog and beg.
David Hunt
I read a little of is campaign blob. After a talk with Gov. Sebelius’ people (and her for about two minutes), he was told that they’d help out if he proved he was “viable.” IOW, that he could raise money for his campaign. If he can raise 26K by 7/28, they’ll hook him up with the Big Money People or some such. I’m sure the fact that he was only 5% down in the polls while running on a shoestring had something to do with it. I tried to go back to his site and find the specific blog entry but couldn’t. Sorry
Personally, I’ll look at this guy’s opponent tonight and if he’s as bad as he’s portrayed, I’ll give the idea of a donation, serious consideration.
scott
According to what I saw in KS law, if he abided by the terms of the Diversion Agreement, the charges against him would be dismissed “with prejudice” meaning that the case was over and the prosecutor could never file it again.
As such, he is not a convicted felon.
scott
Okay, I contacted the campaign thru the web site and within 90 minutes got a reply. Here’s what I said:
Here was Mr Tevis’s reply:
Steve V
Funny … he probably thought he had a clean record and it turns out that it’s the newspaper’s online archives that he has to worry about. Oh well, he has a pretty brilliant web site and a decent platform so I don’t begrudge him my donation.
Dennis - SGMM
Small world indeed. The piece you linked made several disparaging references to Drew Edmondson. I got to know Drew when we were in the same Navy squadron. He was a good guy although at a time when most of us were figuring out how to get drunk and/or laid, Drew was already focused on being elected to public office. I lost track of him after I transferred out. Good to hear that he realized part of his ambition (He was aiming for governor) and that he’s still pissing off the rednecks.
Genine
I’m in!
He’s funny, too!
Punchy
Now I feel like an ass for digging that up. Sounds like a good guy.
Shinobi
He’s up to 2700.
Jeff
I’m kicking in at least $17, just for referencing xkcd!
Abhinav
I posted his link at the Obama group on Facebook, and some peeps there have donated a bit. Looks like he is pretty close to meeting his targeted no of donors. Don’t know about the amount though. Maybe he should set up an ActBlue page too.
Jim in Everett WA
Done.
It was well worth the $8.34.
dr. bloor
Eh, better you than some ambitious takedown artist. He can pre-empt or formulate a response now.
scott
Exactly. That’s one reason why I contacted him. Since he’s clearly generating a buzz with his “bleg” and hoping to use the response to generate more publicity and thus donations and name recognition, he should expect the bad that comes with the good.
Now he knows it’s out there and can be ready for it.
Again, I did a *lot* of stoopid shit in college and probably just got lucky I didn’t get nailed for some of it.
Ian
Really funny comic, but I wasn’t convinced because he’s not in my state. Then I saw it was Kansas, and knew I had to help.
scott
He’s up to 4101! Amazing.
Just when I think my current residence (Misery) has taken the lead from Texas in being the National Laboratory for Bad Government, I just look next door to KS and how the fundies have taken over. That’s reason enough to send this guy a few bucks if it means sending one more KS member of the American Taliban back to his Six Flags Over Jesus church.
Sasha
If Sean can just defend himself against the inevitable attacks of him being a 133tist, I think he’s got the election in the bag.
tom
I just sent $10. They say there is a good chance Kansas will join the 21st century by November. . .
