I hate the new bookmarks feature that Firefox 3.01 has- any suggestions on a plugin?
Also, how do I stop my computer from going into powersaving mode and prompting me for a pssword every 30 mins?
Finally, the computer came with goodle desktop or something spamming the entire right side of the computer. Is there anything worthwhile there, or should I uninstall it?
And before I head off to dinner, a quick screenshot:

I initially misread the last word in the title of that Mike Memoli post.

What OS do you use? If it’s Windows, go into Control Panel and then Power Options to change the power-saving settings.
Keith
That’s a screensaver setting. Your SS is set to enter power-saving mode very early, but it’s also set to require a pword when it turns off the SS. Should just be a checkbox on that tab of Display Settings
bago
power options. Also the google thing sounds like a gadget for the sidebar. In windows you have a right mouse button. Use it

I guess you’re using Vista, which I haven’t upgraded to yet, but I did recently install Office 2007, which added that desktop search thingy and which also drove me crazy by spending a few hours indexing my entire hard drive, as if I wanted every piece of text in every file indexed for searching.
Now that I’ve gotten rid of the search box in the start bar, I can’t remember how I did it. Think I just left-clicked until I found the thing that said, “bail this junk” or something. As for the power settings, is there a control panel labeled “Power Options” that you can set up to turn monitors off after 15 mins, but not put the system or hard drives to sleep?

An easy mistake to make. It’s one of the very first things that comes to my mind when I think about John McCrain.
CarpeDiva Hussein
oh, he’s the risky dick, all right…
Jeff
Use del.icio.us You can tag bookmarks and use search features with firefox plugin. Also, bookmarks are now portable between computers.

There are two settings for the prompts; one is the screensaver setting ‘On resume, display Welcome screen’, and the second is the power management setting for ‘Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby’. This is in XP, btw. Vista should be similar.
Suspend/sleep settings are in power management.
Ted
Hilarious. That’s the Vista Sidebar feature. You can turn it off. Unless it actually has a Google search field in it, in which case it would be the Google Desktop program, which can be uninstalled.
The Moar You Know
Badass one by Microsoft. It’s called “Internet Explorer 7.0”.
Ha, just kidding, I use Opera. Firefox pisses me off.
The Moar You Know
Control Panel -> Personalization -> Screen Saver settings
Uncheck the box that says “On resume, display logon screen”.

obama says mccain has whiskey dick? damn, that’s what i call hitting back hard. well, maybe not ‘hard’.
dorkboy
What’s wrong with Firefox (other than the new bookmarking feature, which I also don’t like)?

From that MSNBC piece:
I like that ‘tired status quo’ bit. It alludes to McCrank’s advanced age without actually mentioning it.
And I had to read the title twice before I stopped seeing “prick” instead of “pick”. Apparently my eyes hung onto the “r” from the preceding word and reused it to make the title better comport with reality.

I kept adding an “F” in front of Risky, which really reads off.

SLOW browser is SLOW.
Did I mention that Firefox is SLOW? And bloated. And has an infuriating lack of customization; you either like the interface or you don’t. Also, not that this is a slam on Firefox per se, but I’ve gotten really used to having my mail client and browser integrated.
It also renders weird. Not sure how to explain that.
I’ll give it this; if you’re running Linux, it’s your only option for browsing IE-preferred sites. Opera doesn’t handle those well at all, though there’s a lot fewer of them than there used to be.

Moar:
Got it! Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing that Opera 9.5 is supposed to be lightning fast, but I’ve been using Firefox for so long I haven’t noticed the speed. Thanks.

“I hate the new bookmarks feature that Firefox 3.01 has- any suggestions on a plugin?”
You want an “add on” and this might be it:
Bookmark Previews
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6271
adds album and thumbnail views for the bookmarks.
“Also, how do I stop my computer from going into powersaving mode and prompting me for a pssword every 30 mins?”
In Vista, click the start button to open the start menu, then type the first few letters of whatever you want… that will go in the slot at the lower left hand corner of the start menu; in this case, “power” will get you Power Options.
“Finally, the computer came with goodle desktop or something spamming the entire right side of the computer. Is there anything worthwhile there, or should I uninstall it?”
The gadget bar has never seemed any goodle to me; I always uninstall it soon after getting any new Vista box… YMMV.
Parenthetically, in Vista, always go to Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools > left hand margin > Adjust usual affects > turn off everything that you don’t actually use; the eye candy sucks CPU cycles.

Off topic, but where the heck is Bill Clinton lately? Is he campaigning for Barak in some kind of double super secret news blackout stealth mode? Sulking at home? Or am I just not paying attention?

Firefox has had it’s share of bugs over the many version and does render a little weird, But Slow? Not in my experience. It is much faster the IE with many times less malware to clean. The only time I use IE is when I have no choice, like for watching Netflix instant. Otherwise I wouldn’t touch IE if you paid me. Although that would depend on how much.
Jeff Eaton
Seconding the firefox Delicious plugin. I use it religiously and it’s a lot handier. No worries about losing my links if my browser goes down in flames, either.
John S.
He’s on double secret probation.

I’m still using Firefox 2.xx with Vista. No issues and MUCH superior to IE. Ive been ducking the upgrade to 3.x
The Other Steve
I just use IE 7, and having used Firefox to test compatibility really find nothing compelling about it to make me change my mind.
I’ve given up on bookmarks. Every time I save a bookmark, I find I never go back to look at it again anyway. :-)
Jeffrey Boser
bookmark feature? You don’t like the ability to make a bookmark with one click? Then don’t click the star, you don’t need a addon to not use a feature.
UncommonSense
I don’t even bother with regular bookmarks anymore.
I use IE 7 because you can actually use it as an RSS feed reader.
It’s teh awesome.
Krista
on computer-related notes, I finally took pity on the husband having to listen to the constant clackety-clack (I’m a loud typist), and bought one of those flexible keyboards. Man, they are REALLY hard to get used to!

I have XP Pro at home and there is no IE program installed. I had the 7.0 beta, I tried to update it to full IE 7.0 but it told me it can’t uninstall the beta…….and stopped. So now I have no IE. Weird. I only ever use Firefox anyway but it’s still disconcerting. Sometimes I click a .gif image and IE seems to open and close lightning fast. There’s just a flash then nothing.
Kevin
As long as he stays there, wherever that is, it’s fine with me.
dd
use the extension Openbook, which improves FF’s bookmarking
publius
On the bookmarks, I just do Google Reader.
As for FF3, i have some issues to add to the list if anyone knows anything (i know it’s a google, but i haven’t found good answers). first, i can’t get updates (it’s greyed out) — so i have to just replace the version. second, i often type addresses in, hit return, and nothing happens. Really annoying.
but… i really like the “awesome bar” and hte most visited tab/bookmark feature.
Frank
Dump Firefox.
Use Opera.
In addition to the browser, it includes an RSS aggregator, an email client, and a great client for text newsgroups, all in a fantastically small HDD footprint. And it runs on everything from Windows to real OS’s like Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. And it’s completely W3C compliant.
I’ve been using it since v. 3.
NonWonderDog
The Vista sidebar isn’t brilliant, but there are a couple useful apps for it. Calculatorium is quite nice. I’ve also got the local weather and a completely superfluous faux-analog clock in it. I’ve got network meters and CPU meters that I turn on occasionally, too.
It’s MUCH more useful once you realize that you can instantly bring it into focus with [Windows]+[Space Bar].
NonWonderDog
What’s the “new bookmarks feature” in Firefox 3.01, btw? The only differences I’ve noticed are the “most visited” tab in my bookmarks toolbar and the “recent bookmarks” folder in the bookmarks pull-down. Both can be deleted, I think. (I keep RSS feeds in the bookmarks toolbar for some reason, since it always seemed like the right thing to do.)
Fulcanelli
Safari for Windows from Apple. Faster’n shit and simple to use…
I’ve been using FF for a quite a while and tho’ I like the plugins, they do slow FF down a lot after a while especially when starting up.
Bill
Totally. IE was too open to attacks and still too buggy, and Firefox is way too slow on my machine. So most of the time, I’m using Safari now. Didn’t think I’d like it, but I do. I’m not a bells and whistles guy, and delicious is still an adjective to me, so that doesn’t matter. For just simple browsing, can’t beat it.
Andrew J. Lazarus
Funny, I love the awesome bar.
scarshapedstar
…what’s the bookmark feature? I’m drawing a complete blank here.
DrDave
Funny. I just like running FF 2 on my Macs. When I switched over from PC’s I couldn’t get used to the fact that Safari has no bookmark sidebar–one of the features that has made the Mozilla browser such an improvement over IE.

SeaMonkey/Mozilla is the only browser I use, same for the email client. I use the FlashBlock plugin, Toy Factory theme, and I can right-click ad images to set the advertiser URL to blocked. It loads pages fast, and I like the bookmark customizing I can do with it.
Internet Exploder is a welcome mat for viruses, trojans, worms and hackers. IMO, IE ought to be classified as a malware. I have never cared one whit about it because it sucked in Win95, and it still sucks to this day.
Leaving Coos Bay for home today, but we are taking our time as it is supposed to be in the high 60’s to low 70’s on the coast. Great motorcycling weather and a good excuse to do some sightseeing on the way home. Lots of motorcycles on the road, and very few RV’s. Our hotel parking lot looked like a biker rally last night, there are that many staying over here.

I used XP Home with Firefox ( you can’t uninstall IE but some hide or restrict it on purpose ), Opera, Avant, Flock, Seamonkey ( not with Firefox ! ) … a nut. But I had fun on my home computer.
The Google sidebar comes up when you click a small square on the right of the toolbar. To stow it, just hit the its minimize key at the sidebar top.
I like del.icio.us bookmarks and share my file online : others let me access their files too. There is more than one utility to add it, however. Shareaholic includes del.icio.us.
Firefox is very good about helping you test out add-ons : but you must check Tools>Add Ons and monitor what is happening.
I changed to Firefox 3.0 a few weeks ago and found some add ons wouldn’t work. That’s normal as it takes time to write programs and they don’t happen instantly. To deal with this, add ons can be either disabled or uninstalled – in Tools – to get the behavior you want by trial and error.
I still use Firefox.
I use a mechanical email filter and often won’t even click links to unsubscribe the dumbass spamming my inbox ( what are the chances of my doing business with a jerk that helps ruin my system ? ). Trojan. Scan doesn’t pick it up.
New email. New OS. Unbuntu is different but so much easier to deal with than my brief experiment with Mandriva/KDE.

The whole Google desktop and widgets are a crap. Just go ahead and uninstall those.
