Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The Agony of The Pedestrian Affair

by John Cole|  July 23, 200810:48 pm| 156 Comments

This post is in: Media

Mickey Kaus is very upset that the media not paying attention to the alleged John Edwards affair, and in a piece called the Agony of the MSM, he lists all the people not paying sufficient attention to the matter. Let me break it down for you.

The reason no one is paying attention is not because, as you might think, John Edwards is a media darling and they just love him to bits and pieces. Quite the contrary. I have never cared much for Edwards, and even I recognize that he got the absolute worst media coverage during the primary- he got none at all. They ignored him. He was the invisible man. And if you doubt that no media coverage is worse than bad media coverage, take a gander at the McCain campaign, which has shifted to gaffe-o-matic mode while trying to do ANYTHING to get some media attention while Obama is overseas.

The reason no one is paying attention to the alleged affair and love-child is simple. You guys have made standard affairs boring (I know, I know. You claim to be a Democrat.). No one is claiming Edwards was seen in two wetsuits hanging from the ceiling with a dildo lodged in his rectum. There is no DC madam with a black book involved. No one has transcripts of him instant messaging teen-age congressional pages or crashing their dorms in a drunken stupor. There is no arrest record for soliciting oral sex in an airport bathroom, complete with feisty confrontations with the arresting officer on video tape. There is no religious hypocrisy and gay prostitution and meth-fueled sodomy binge to talk about.

In short, aside from the fact that all there is to the story is an Enquirer report, it is just boring. You all have made standard affairs pedestrian and dull. Even when you use the phrase “love child,” what it boils down to is a guy allegedly sleeping with a woman. Pretty tame stuff, given what the GOP has provided us for the past few years.

Now maybe if he got caught engaging in oral sex with goats. That would probably get some attention.

It Is Now Official

The McCain campaign can start drinking heavily:

The major Sunni sheik who John McCain said was protected by the surge and subsequently helped lead the Anbar Awakening, was actually assassinated by an al-Qaeda led group in midst of the surge.

On Tuesday evening, McCain falsely claimed that the downturn in violence in Iraq’s Anbar province was a result of the surge, when in fact the surge began months afterward. Moreover, he said, if it weren’t for the work of U.S. forces, the major Sunni figure leading that awakening wouldn’t have had the protection he needed.

***

The Arizona Republican’s campaign went further the next day, claiming that the major figures that turned around Anbar province would have been killed had the surge policy not been in place. “If Barack Obama had had his way, the Sheiks who started the Awakening would have been murdered at the hands of al Qaeda,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Sadly, that murder took place even with the surge underway. In September 2007, Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, the sheik widely credited with persuading Sunni leaders to turn against al Qaeda in Iraq, died in a bomb attack in Anbar. His work, prior to then, was held as a major effort in transforming the province from one of Iraq’s deadliest areas into one of its safest.

This has gone from a serious campaign into something of a hybrid modern art masterpiece/comedy sketch. To call the McCain campaign a train wreck is to portray it too positively. Seriously, all these self-inflicted wounds this week are on his strong topic. On his weak topic, the economy, he tries to go to an oil rig to get some press attention, and has to cancel because of an oil spill and a hurricane.

*** Update ***

Off topic but not worthy of a separate post, I have a super hot scoop for Patrick Ruffini– sometimes, when foreign companies advertise their products in the United States, they use English, and not their native tongue, as you would have thought. It turns out that if you are Volkswagen, and you are wanting to reach people in the US, you should use English rather than German. I know, I know, that sounds crazy, but it is true.

Also, they even pronounce Volkswagen differently here in the states! I am sure there is a story in there somewhere.

Now It Makes More Sense

All of a sudden the asinine Holocaust remarks from Tucker Bounds and Goldfarb make more sense:

Barack Obama has caught up to John McCain in Florida. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Obama with a statistically insignificant one-point advantage over his rival, 46% to 45%. When “leaners” are included, the Democrat leads 49% to 47%.

Over the past six months, McCain has maintained leads ranging from seven to sixteen percentage points. Last month, McCain led 48% to 41% in the Sunshine State.

A big push for Obama this month in Florida comes from unaffiliated voters. Last month, he had just a three-point lead in this demographic. This month, he leads by twenty-three.

You can almost hear them at McCain HQ- “Oh, shit. We are losing Florida. Time to scare the shit out of the Jews.”

Not a Bad Movie

This is just win:

While Barack Obama is speaking about international affairs in Germany before thousands of fans tomorrow, John McCain will be talking about a pressing domestic issue with an equally striking if very different backdrop.

Weather permitting, McCain will helicopter from Louisiana to an oil rig in the Gulf Coast to make the case for expanded off-shore drilling, says a McCain aide.

While Obama is speaking to an international audience, McCain will be dodging a hurricane to stand on the symbol of big oil, where he can presumably tell the American people that if we start looking for more oil offshore, in ten years when McCain is 82 we might be able to start producing enough to lower the price of gas a nickel.

And then there is this winning art design:

Nothing says peace, prosperity, and optimism like fire-red skies and fighter planes. How much is the Obama campaign paying Steve Schmidt?

*** Update ***

Dr. Melissa Clouthier is going to shit a pink twinkie when she sees the McCain poster.

*** Update #2 ***

Awesome timing for the oil-rig stunt, McSame:

The U.S. Coast Guard has closed 29 miles of the Mississippi River from New Orleans southward after a tanker and a barge collided, spilling more than 400,000 gallons of fuel oil into the river.

Tugboats hold up pieces of a barge after it collided with a tanker Wednesday in the Mississippi River in New Orleans.

The river, a major shipping route between the Midwest and Gulf of Mexico, could be closed for days during the cleanup, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.

More than 30 ships already are queued up along the river, waiting to pass through the closed zone, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jaclyn Young said.

The Coast Guard has deployed 45,000 feet of inflatable booms to contain the spill and is lining up another 29,000 feet, but it could be days before the river is reopened, she said.

The accident left a sheen over 90 percent of the area, she said.

At what point does the McCain campaign staff just start drinking heavily?

He Also Has Not Prevented Future Great Depressions

Today’s new “new low” from McCain spokesmen Tucker Bounds and wingnut extraordinaire Michael Godfarb, on loan to the Bullshit Express from the Weekly Standard:

The McCain campaign implied on Wednesday that Barack Obama’s commitment to preventing a future genocide was not sincere, attacking the Democratic candidate during his appearance at the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem.

In an early morning press release, entitled “Obama on Genocide,” McCain aide Tucker Bounds emailed reporters a quote from Obama’s appearance in which the Illinois Democrat reiterated the cry “never again.” He followed that quote with one taken a year ago from an interview that the Senator gave with the Associated Press in which he said that genocide or humanitarian crises were not a prerequisite for keeping U.S. troops in Iraq (a statement he has since walked back)

“Well, look, if that’s the criteria by which we are making decisions on the deployment of U.S. forces,” said Obama, “then by that argument you would have 300,000 troops in the Congo right now.”

The message was fairly explicit: Obama’s commitment to stopping future Holocausts is in doubt. Asked for clarification, McCain aide Michael Goldfarb responded:

“Today he says ‘never again.’ A year ago stopping genocide wasn’t a good enough reason to keep U.S. forces in Iraq. Doesn’t that strike you as inconsistent?”

Other things Obama has not done enough to stop:

The Mummy IV
Future Savings and Loan Crises
Lunar Eclipses
Herpes Outbreaks
The earth being ravaged by a vengeful Army sent by the Flying Spaghetti Monster
Stupid shit being muttered in desperation by the McCain campaign

This Is Weird

Really bizarre:

Syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak was cited by police after he hit a pedestrian with his black Corvette in downtown Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning.

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well. The pedestrian, a male in his 60s, was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital with minor injuries according to the Metro Fire Department. Novak was later released by police and drove away from the scene.

“I didn’t know I hit him,” Novak told Politico. Novak said he was a block away from 18th and K St. NW, where the accident happened, when a bicyclist stopped him and said, “You hit someone.” He said he was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

The Politico has an interview with him right after he got the cop car, and in the video he looks really rattled and out of it.

So Much for Clearing Brush

by John Cole|  July 23, 20085:46 am| 77 Comments

This post is in: Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

The best thing about this Bush tape that everyone is talking about is this bit:

t is uncertain, there’s no question about it.

Wall Street got drunk, it got drunk, (it’s one of the reasons I asked you to turn off your tv cameras.) It got drunk and now it’s got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up, and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments.

And now we got a housing issue, not in Houston, and evidently, not in Dallas, because Laura was over there trying to buy a house today. (laugher.. Crawford!)

I like Crawford, unfortunately after eight years of asking her to sacrifice, I’m now no longer the decision maker. She’ll be deciding, thanks for the suggestion! I suggest you don’t yell it out when she’s here. Later, telling her “Hey honey, we’ve been on government pay now for 14 years… so go slow!”

It’s uh.. caused me to lose my train of thought. Anyway.

Now that he doesn’t have to pretend that he is an average everyday guy you want to have a beer with, the Crawford ranch is getting thrown under the bus. How long before it goes on sale (and, no doubt, will be bought, above market value, by one of the Bush/Cheney cronies, as that is an easy way to funnel some loot his way)? A year? Sixteen months?

By the way- government pay is $400k a year for Bush. Just an average guy, you know.
