I’m really sorry to hear about Bernie Mac. 50 is way too young to die. My sympathies go out to his widow and the rest of his family.

The importance of his death is emblematic of the racial divide in this country. In the Black community he was enormously popular, from the Original Kings of Comedy to the Bernie Mac show. He worked his way up through the chitlin’ circuit until eventually he was doing films alongside Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Matt Damon. It’s rather impressive really. Also, how can you not honor the life of a man who was in 3 of the funniest movies of all time, Friday, Bad Santa and BAPS (a highly underrated film). While he certainly rubbed me the wrong way, he could be really funny.
And yeah, Ludacris should be a bit concerned.

I’d forgotten he was in Bad Santa. I loved him in the Original Kings of Comedy but never watched the Bernie Mac show. Rest in peace Bernie.

Friday was okay. Bad Santa had its moments, but I found it mainly depressing. Baps was atrocious. I watched it for 30 minutes. Talk about putting black women in a bad light. I actually felt sorry for Halle Berry. Saw Bernie Mac a couple of times. Better than your average sitcom. Then again, that’s not saying much.

I thought Bernie was great in Bad Santa, Mr. 3000 (an underrated movie), and the first two Ocean’s movies (he was one of the few good things about the second one, and nobody was good in the third). As with almost all stand-ups turned actors, though, his stand-up work is his real legacy. He was a master of the comedy of barely-contained (and yet entirely justifiable, at least in his telling) rage. I have rarely laughed as hard as when I saw The Original Kings Of Comedy in a theater, with a mixed-race crowd – and having him come on last was exactly the right choice. He blew the walls down. I would argue, by the way, that Kings is the only truly great movie Spike Lee’s ever done (you probably forgot he directed it, didn’t you?).

Mac was the best part of The Kings of Comedy. The other guys went over familiar turf, but Mac used his messed up family life – his drugged out sister, her kids which he now has to raise, and his brother who walked out on raising the kids. One of his funniest, dirtiest, and earliest jokes was , “Guy asks me, ‘Hey Bernie, does p**** taste like pumpkin pie?’ What they hell you asking me for? I ain’t never eat no pumpkin pie!”

This is a great comedic loss. I loved his stand-up and his TV show. I thought that scene with Matt Damon in Ocean’s 11 was the best part of the movie. RIP.

I liked him in “Bad Santa,” the rest is personal tastes and he wasn’t quite my cup of tea (never saw his TV show).
