I am hammered.

Woo. Saturday. Wilco.

Sky Blue sky.

Piss off, I know I am supposed to do or say something clever, you fucking wankers, when holding this much booze on my own without making an ass out of myself and spilling a bunch of secrets and maybe saying flirtatious things I regret is supposed to be enough.

After a bunch of vodka it just feels good.

John +7 (Krista promises to flash her Canadian hoo-has at +12)

*** Update **

Shit. I completely forgot both candidates were dealing with bible thumpers like Rick Warren tonight.

I hope both promised to honor and obey the flying spaghetti monster or whatever bullshit makes people happy. Personally, I was out drinking trying to think of reasons to have an abortion.

I caught a bit of Obama at the Warren thing. We turned to the Olympics and skipped the McCain piece. I did read a couple of follow up articles to get a sense of it.

It appears that McCain gave his stump speech… every answer was the cookie cutter, Republican polled, stock answer that the base enjoys.

Obama had a frank discussion. He said some things that probably won’t make the evangelicals happy, but then he also explained some things noting common ground.

I think in the end, Obama gains votes as a result, notably with the younger evangelicals who see different priorities. McCain maintained with the core base, but may have hurt himself with centrist/independent voters.

One other thing to note. In some of the coverage lately, I’ve been seeing the media be more willing to use terms like “false charge” or “lies”. It’s a pleasant change from their past of taking lies and treating them as serious issues.

Forget the Warren debates. The real news today is that McCain threw away Colorado and made a good stab at losing Utah and Wyoming.

Apparently the deal which protects those states’ stake in the water that flows down the mountains from there is too sweet and needs to be renegotiated for the sake of poor old Arizona. And of course California.

Democrats and Republicans alike in Colorado were lining up today to say this would happen over their dead bodies.

Is it wrong that six months into the campaign I still can’t tell if McCain is trying to win or leave the Republicans a flaming wreck in revenge for 2000?

Just got back from a resupply run on the motorcycle to California to restock on alcohol. I should be +3 or +4 in about an hour or so. Plus the > +20 bowls choked down to keep the nausea from the meds at bay earlier today.

Nice ride, mostly foggy but sunny in other places. Stopped and shot some 35mm SLR pics of cows wandering in the fog on Carpenterville Road/Hwy. 255 north of town about 20 miles. Saw a few deer and more cows along the way. Stopped at a point well above the ocean and was lucky enough to see whales in a bay. A few minor breaches and lots of spouting, which was pretty cool.

On the way back through town I waved to Harley rider who refused to wave at someone on a rice grinder (yet again), but he turned his head towards me (we were going in opposite directions in a 25 MPH zone) and shook his head at me like ‘no way dude’, which was a first. Well, my wave quickly became a single finger salute and you should have seen the look on his face. Priceless. Since he was going the other way (with a passenger) and traffic was a bit heavy, there was little chance of him turning around easily. I wouldn’t have cared if he did…lol! I would have told him to fuck off to his fat face.

I don’t know what it is about some ‘hard core’ Harley biker types but they act like their shit don’t stink. I find it humorous that some of them refuse to wave at fellow riders, and attribute it to the ‘snob factor’ some bikers have because they are riding a Harley. That my bike can make most of them suck my exhaust fumes seems to escape them. That and in all of my years of riding, I can’t remember seeing a disabled Japanese bike but I have seen (and helped) plenty of Harley riders who were dead on the road.

But the single finger salute was priceless tonight. I have wanted to do that for years, but until this a-hole shook his head ‘no’ at me I really didn’t have a reason. It was nice to see a situation where the Harley rider thought he was going to snub a ricer and for once the situation was not what the a-hole expected.

    Time for +1.

By the way, apparently it cost between $500 and $2,000 to get into the Saddleback Church for the Obama/McCain show, which is pretty stunning.

In a way, I am not surprised one bit that a mega-church (or anyone who is a religious ‘leader’) would take advantage of the situation to make a buck (or thousands of bucks). To me, that puts a sort of ‘spin’ on the composition of the crowd that Obama and McCain faced. There is no way that that the church will convince me that the crowd is representative of Christian society, not with a ‘filter’ of $500 to $2,000 to keep the poor Christians out.

In my mind, the profit making of this deal really sours the whole concept. With the Rev. calling for the commercial breaks during the event, I wonder what his cut of the take in advertising revenue was? I have no doubt that he had his hands in that too. Of course, it will be noted that it was a ‘donation’ to the church, right? ;)

Not just them. Remember how Colbert’s speech at the White Corresposdents dinner galvanized everyone who saw it on video, but didn’t impress the audience that was there?

This may be a more muted version of that. McCain probably did shore up the older evangelical base, but but moderate Christians are more likely to be impressed by Obama’s thoughtful responeses, and holding his own, amidst an audience that many will regard as closer to the far right fringe of Christianity than their own views.

Overall, McCain will get the balance of the airplay and pundit praise for responding to the base, but Obama probably changed some minds, got some people to consider him more seriously than they had, and may get more votes in the long run from this appearance than McCain.

John: Wilco rocks. Saw them at a Tragically Hip show in Ottawa in 97. Them and Ashley MacIssac were awesome. One thing that sucked was that some dickhead charged to the front of the show and started attacking some women who didn’t want to give up their spot (when I say attacking, I mean throwing haymakers). Anyhow, security rightly removed the aforementioned dickhead. Jeff Tweedy saw this and assumed that the dickhead was some poor innocent guy who got caught smoking a joint or something and chewed out the bouncers for roughing up the dickhead. Too bad. Great show nonetheless.

In the Southwest, everything comes down to water, and if McCain doesn’t know that, his handlers surely do. If I were running for Prez, I might be willing to risk pissing off Colorado, Wyoming and Utah’s piddly 17 electoral votes for the best chance to woo California’s 55 (and keep Arizona’s 10).

There is no way that that the church will convince me that the crowd is representative of Christian society, not with a ‘filter’ of $500 to $2,000 to keep the poor Christians out.

And Lake Forrest (where his church is) is a pretty upscale suburb of South Orange County. Barack did get in a little good-natured dig joshing him about what qualifies as “rich” and mentioning making 25 mil on your book.

In the Southwest, everything comes down to water, and if McCain doesn’t know that, his handlers surely do.

McCain represents Arizona. How can he not know this? If he were only acting as the Senator from Arizona this year, this would be a rational move. There wasn’t a link, but if this concerns Colorado River water, it also involves Nevada, which is up for grabs as well, and has been leaning more toward blue in recent years. He’ll have to work harder than this to alienate Utah and Wyoming, but he might be able to swing it.

Here’s the story from the Pueblo Chieftain.

I grew up in southern Colorado. You cannot believe what a HUGE deal water is in the State. McCain just pissed off every farmer, rancher and rural voter who ever voted repub. The reason they are big on keeping their guns in Colorado is so they can shoot people who steal their water.

Religious money grubbers get no respect from me, especially when they profit from the politics of our country.

Look, I happen to live in the immediate vicinity of Saddleback Church. And while I have no love lost for the vast majority of evangelicals, I have come to have a bit of respect for Rick Warren. He is far more interested in using the money he makes through the ministry in order to actually try to create a better world (he donated 90% of the profits from his book The Purpose Driven Life to his church). He and his wife are dedicated to battling HIV/AIDS and to trying to battle global hunger, sickness and illiteracy.

I’m not a member of his church or anything, but I do believe that his heart and intentions are coming from a better place than most other high-profile evangelicals.

As to what was charged to attend this event, we don’t know that Rick Warren is the one who personally benefits from the money that was collected. It is entirely possible, even likely, that the church is the organization that benefits. And, while I hate to admit it, I’d rather see this money going to Saddleback than some of the other evangelical churches…at least with Saddleback, I’d feel that the money is likely to go to a good cause.

At any rate, if anyone is interested in a short summary of just who Rick Warren is, Time magazine did an article on him in a recent issue. Read it here.

Personally, I was out drinking trying to think of reasons to have an abortion.

We’re liberals. We don’t need a reason. The challenge is figuring out a way to have one every day just for the sheer fun of it.

I live near Saddleback as well and have no beef with Rick. He’s not one of the bad guys out there. I asked one of my coworkers about the event who is a member of the church and she was pretty sure the proceeds went to the church. BTW, most of the audience was not from the church. This is an upscale area, but $500 is out of reach for much of the congregation (my coworker makes ~$45K which is a pittance around here). Look to Newport Beach for most of the audience. Lots of money, all Republican. Obama did very well. This was all risk for McCain and all reward for Obama.

Shit. I completely forgot both candidates were dealing with bible thumpers like Rick Warren tonight.

I could be considered to be the founder of Atheists for the Baby Jesus. I am not even remotely religious, but I take serious note of the faith of others. Anyone who dismisses Warren as a mere “Bible thumper” is seriously underestimating him and the importance of both candidates’ appearance at Warren’s Southern California church.

First, and most important, pundits who dismiss this appearance at Warren’s church are simply expressing their jealousy that they could not control this forum or whatever conclusions that voters make as a result. Warren is not a seasoned journalist, but many of his questions were obviously based on what was important to his congregation, as opposed to the homongenized faux concerns of the Washington Beltway crowd. Quick hint as to why this was better: not a syllable about Reverend Wright or flag lapel pins.

Secondly, those who think that McCain will make a fool of himself at upcoming traditional debates are whistling past the graveyard. I hadn’t considered it before, but it should be obvious that a man who has dealt with real torture can shrug off the bullshit tossed out by mere reporters. McCain capitilized on Warren’s format by keeping his answers short and then proceeded to directly address the audience, tossing in humor on occaision.

The format was simple. Obama came out and was asked questions. McCain came out later and was asked the same questions. No significant follow-up to any question by Warren.

Obama was more thoughtful, and wisely expanded on his answers, which was necessary for someone whose Christian faith is still doubted by some voters. Even the clearly partisan Republican strategist who commented on the debate between breaks (on the local Orange County tv station which carried the session) noted that Obama was more knowledgeable about Christian doctrince than was McCain. Different styles, but McCain did not embarrass himself (although he did lie outright a couple of times).

Some of Obama’s responses may well speak directly to those evangelicals who questioned his faith, because they clearly showed a knowledge of Christian religious teachings. I noticed people nodding their heads when Obama touched on religious issues. Interestingly enough, the partisan Democratic Party strategist commenting on the debate more or less dismissed Obama’s clearly sincere expressions of faith. But Obama’s answers here may do more to dispel the bullshit that he is a stealth Muslim than any formal protestation.

McCain, by contrast, spoke more simply about his faith, but is clearly more comfortable talking about politics and foreign policy.

But one of the key moments was the response to the excellent question about Supreme Court Justices. Asked which choice they most disapproved, Obama cited Thomas and Scalia. He also noted his reservations about Chief Justice Roberts. McCain, on the other hand, blasted ALL of the moderate/liberal wing (i.e., those chosen by Democratic Presidents).

This wasn’t just boilerplate. Both Obama and McCain clearly laid out their vision of the Court.

McCain also firmly declared himself to be firmly anti-abortion, but pro-stem cell research. Ignorant fundies are not going to be happy here. Obama’s views were more nuanced.

I wasn’t happy with either candidate’s views about faith-based programs and government funding, but McCain was more full of shit on this issue, since he doesn’t see the problem with government funding of organizations who want to choose only their fellow believers as employees in non-religious activities (e.g., Hurrican Katrina relief efforts).

McCain turned a non-related question into a pitch for offshore drilling. Obama did not have a chance to weigh in on this issue.

Watch the Sunday news shows to see if pundits try to get on a high horse about the Saddleback Church appearance.

One cringeworthy moment from the possibly not-ready-for-primetime Brody: “Let’s call a spade a spade.”

    You sure about that?

John +7 (Krista promises to flash her Canadian hoo-has at +12)

I’ve always understood ‘hoo-ha’ to refer to a region a little further south than what John seems to be alluding to. If Krista has more than one ‘hoo-ha’, that would be a strange & amazing thing indeed.

Apparently +7 is where you start to confuse hoo-has and tatas. Of course there’s nothing wrong with tit-fucking if that’s what you like in your confusion.

As one of the 5 people with a television not watching the Olympics, I’ve not fallen thrall to Phelps.

Is it just the pose or does he have preternaturally long arms?

I still loves me some Mark Spitz and his porn star mustache :D

Man, am I sorry that I missed this discussion.

And John, there would have been no point flashing you if you were +12. You wouldn’t remember it, and my ta-tas (I’m with raff, a hoo-ha is further south) are way too fucking spectacular to be unappreciated in that fashion.

The CNB reporter has a link to the 700 Club Nazi fascist children killers and the reporter was fair to Obama – worst, he helped Obama clear up a major negative lie going about among Christians about Obama’s position on an abortion issue? What is wrong with this guy? Does he hate American and want the terrorist to win? Next, he will try and be honest … wait, he did that too. What is going on?

Want a good Sunday morning read with the coffee (or hair of the dog), there is a great piece on a real piece of shit (McSame) in the NYT – Frank Rich savages the senile old geezer and points out that McSame rides on the lying express (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/17/opinion/17rich.html?ref=opinion)

Well, my wave quickly became a single finger salute and you should have seen the look on his face.

I don’t understand. How can you see the look on a guy’s face with a full faced helmet?

    :-)

    Most Harley riders are weekenders.

Anyway, I spent all day yesterday at a scooter rally. 240 scooters went on a 70 mile tour of the Twin Cities. People along the road generally found it kind of fun, except the cars that got stuck waiting for us.

On the way back through town I waved to Harley rider who refused to wave at someone on a rice grinder (yet again)

Elroy’s Lunch, when out on his S3, always waves to other riders, even crazy scooter riders and unfortunately is quite familiar with this response from the “lifestyle” riders. You know, the ones that all wear the same do-rag, leather chaps and black pudding-bowl helmet because, well, they’re individuals and non-conformists.

Krista, methinks John has crush on you. Very sweet.

    @ Bago,
Did you notice that in the photo, his ears hide his gills?
Also, the NBC shots show his mom but there’s no pics of his daddy. The reason: pops is a barracudda (explains the teeth). Ahh, the wonders of science and cross species fertilization.

Krista, seeing as I have the advantage over John of being only a few miles away, perhaps you could arrange for a private viewing, as it were. You know, just to make John jealous, that is…

Is it just the pose or does he have preternaturally long arms?

He does in fact have unusually large arms, an usually extended torso, unusually large hands and even unusually short legs. There was a segment on him the other day basically saying this guy was born with the perfect swimmer’s body, apparently the short legs provide a faster, stronger push-off from the wall, the large upper body (larger lungs than normal along with it) provides for long and strong strokes.

Wow, man, you are way coherent for someone who was out and about on a Sat-nite doing Wilco AND vodka.

I wish I had a big fat joint for everytime I’ve had to endure Uncle John’s greasy “My friends …” Why can’t he just bust out and shout “comrades” instead? You know he wants to …

The question of whether a hoo-ha is plural (he said “hoo-ha’s”) is solved by the +12 rating — at that level, you’re seeing double anyway.
