Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The revolution will be supervised.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

    I love Athenae:

I don’t know what they would have done about Chet Edwards or Sebelius but I’m pretty sure it would have been something similar. Whoever Obama picked, there was footage of them someplace saying something nice about one of his opponents. If the ticket was Obama/Jesus Christ ’08, they’d run ads saying that at one point, Jesus appeared and drew a cross in the dirt and endorsed John McCain. No matter what you do, they’ll hit you, so stop pretending it’s about you at all. Bullies don’t need an excuse to bully. You know what bullies need to bully? Oxygen and an audience. Fuck ’em. Make them eat that goddamn Koho.

An even better (and too true) comment from that Athenae post:

No, they’d say that the VP candidate had previously been convicted and sentenced to death, but used his political connections to survive execution and escape.

My favorite attack came today from one of the Republican guests on “Beyond the Beltway” – in essence, Obama would have locked up the general election had he nominated Hillary, so it’s a sign that Obama is too weak to be President that he chose someone else.

I’m sure it must have made more sense in the original, before being run through a 6 language sequence in Babblefish.

“Why son, just what were you thinking when you killed those civilians?” THINKING?? WTF was he, a 25 year old who was brand new to combat, thinking? He was trying not to get killed. He was trying not to get his men killed. Then, as is always the case in war, something terrible happened.

The person who ought to be on trial for this is safely ensconced at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, watching the Olympics and carefully munching on pretzels.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will tell her pledged delegates on Wednesday that they can vote for presidential hopeful Barack Obama at this week’s convention, several of her supporters said today.

Legally, delegates from 10 states who are elected to support a certain candidate are obliged to vote for that person, even if he or she isn’t running for president anymore. The rest of the state delegates can technically vote for whomever they want at the roll call.

By taking this action, Clinton is freeing up her pledged delegates in those states from their legal obligations.

Still many crestfallen Clinton delegates said Sunday they were still going to vote for her.

“I don’t want my grandchildren’s history teacher tell them that in 2008, Hillary Clinton ran a fairly strong race but then lost all her support when it came down to the final hurdle,” said Daniel Kagan, a Clinton delegate from Denver. “What she is saying is that she is no longer asking you to vote for me.”

A Clinton aide said the Wednesday reception at the Colorado Convention Center will be a chance for her to thank her delegates and encourage them to work to elect the Illinois senator.

Many Democrats have wondered how the Clinton and Obama camps will present a united party.

It’s official. The GOP is hella lame.

They’re grossly outnumbered by a swarm of Democrats, but national Republicans have set up shop in Denver, hoping to thrust themselves into the media’s coverage of the Democratic convention.

Whatsamatta boys, afraid no one will show up to your little party?

Giuliani will appear on Wednesday, when Democrats will focus on national security. It’s Romney’s day on Tuesday, when Democrats will talk about domestic issues and the economy.

Other GOP surrogates for McCain include Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia and Carly Fiorina, former top executive at Hewlett-Packard Co. and a McCain campaign adviser.

Oh God, please let Michelle BachmannTurnerOverdrive be there as well. And maybe Piyush Jindal will drop by and exorcise the evil Democratic spirits from Denver.

    I somehow missed this:

I Spent Years as a POW with John McCain, and His Finger Should Not Be Near the Red Button

A fellow Vietnam POW of McCain’s warns of the candidate’s “quick and explosive temper” and suggests McCain is exaggerating his imprisonment.

John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.

When I was a Plebe (4th classman, or freshman) at the Naval Academy in 1957-58, I was assigned to the 17th Company for my four years there. In those days we had about 3,600 midshipmen spread among 24 companies, thus about 150 midshipmen to a company. As fortune would have it, John, a First Classman (senior) and his room mate lived directly across the hall from me and my two room mates. Believe me when I say that back then I would never in a million or more years have dreamed that the crazy guy across the hall would someday be a Senator and candidate for President!

Worth a read. H/T testvet6778 for his diary on this @ GOS which for some reason I cannot embed the link to…

Now he’ll probably just tell me to go fuck one of his goats.

He doesn’t share, and you wouldn’t want sloppy seconds anyways. ;)

Just got back from a nice 80+ mile motorcycle ride. Lots of fellow riders on the highway tonight. A friend stopped by from Grants Pass, and he was leaving here at 7PM to meet up with his nephew in Hiouchi, California. His nephew just bought a used Honda Magna V45 which he is using for a long work commute between Lake Earl and Cave Junction, Oregon (nuts!), and his uncle wanted to follow him home to be able to flip him shit about his sloppy cornering. ;) I decided to ride up to Patrick’s Creek, CA with them for the hell of it. Any excuse to ride is a good one.

His nephew chickened out and drove their car…lol! So my friend and I had a nice ride following his nephew to Patrick’s Creek, where I was turning around.

We still ribbed him about his lousy cornering (in his car). ;)

Saw fire service vehicles and smelled smoke about 30 miles in, but didn’t see any smoke or fire. One idiot firefighter came around a blind corner (coming at us) passing a car (his red lights were on), so he was in our lane and we had to scramble to get out of his way. The idiot should not have been passing on a winding mountain two-lane road, hauling ass around a blind 25 MPH corner. He must have been doing about 35-40.

Talk about damn near shitting your pants. But the rest of the ride was great, and I stopped at a few points along the way just for the heck of it. Gotta get all the riding in while the weather allows!

that is the most hysterical thing I’ve seen in a while. The reporter, standing in the middle of a protest starts whining about free speech, then gets surrounded by people yelling “Fuck Fox News”

The FCC must be getting their fine machine up and running!! I’m sure that offended some wilting lilly sensibilities’ out there. I mean some leftist said FUCK on national TV. The moral decline in the country is evident in the fact that someone said FUCK on TV. That’s not freedom of speech, that’s killing American culture.

Or maybe the fines are only for the “leftists”, like the NFL and CBS.

    Damn. Stay safe out there.

My wife did the community police academy and afforded me some time to talk with the local emergency folks (my family is full of cops and firemen). I was chatting with one of the engine drivers and asked him about how they handle clueless drivers when they plow through an intersection. He said that any responsible emergency vehicle driver stops or yields at all intersections on an emergency. He said that the the frequency that emergency vehicles plow into each other responding to the same call from different directions is astounding. They both think they have the right of way and they can’t hear other sirens over their own. Boom.

My biggest concern with Hillary isn’t her experience or policy positions, it’s the way the VRWC will go after her.

    Damn. Stay safe out there.

Thanks, I do my darndest to do so. I drive like nobody can see me, which is true for a lot of ‘cagers’. ;) We had some emergency vehicle collisions in Spokane years ago, and you are right when you say that they both think they have the right of way. There is one intersection in downtown Spokane that is (maybe was if they corrected it by now) two one-way streets that cross at a blind intersection. I lost count of how many emergency/emergency and emergency/civilian crashes happened at that corner while I lived there. I remember one crash there that the cop plowed into a Honda Civic with two people in it. The cop survived, as did the passenger in the Honda, but the driver was hit square on (T-boned) and was killed instantly. Both cars were totaled, and I mean totaled. The couple had the green light, and they were doing about 25, and the cop came through the intersection going about 50 with his lights on.

    Nuts!

So, no principled stand on Edwards now, I suppose. Obama was your next preference and Biden third on the succession list. And you come around here and shit on everyone, why, exactly?

I have always said that I started out supporting Edwards (because Gore didn’t run) and that Hillary was my fourth choice, after Dodd and Biden.

Edwards dropped out, and has now revealed himself to be an idiot. I still think Biden would be a good Secretary of State.

I thought Obama would be a good VP choice back then because he lacks experience. I had him 6th on my list, after Richardson. That was way back at the beginning. Now that I’ve learned more about him, no amount of experience will qualify him for office.

I truthfully stated that my main concern about Hillary was the way the VRWC would attack her. She has proven to be more than a match for them.

What does any of that have to do with the fake posturing about the importance of the rules? My position on that issue is a principled stand and remains unchanged.

But in answer to your question, I don’t shit on everyone, I shit on liars and hypocrites.

And on GOP ratfuckers like Conservatively Liberal Goatse

Just out of curiosity, what do you think you’ve discovered that justifies throwing out any hope of a addressing climate change, improving CAFE standards, investing in alternative energy, improved health care, job creation, government transparency, fairer taxation, ending the war in Iraq, restoring sensible foreign policy etc? You must have dig up the mother of all October surprises to want to toss all that out the window.

The sacrifice to the Sun Queen is worth it to him. Edwards is supposed to be stronger than Hillary because the VRWC would take Hillary down if she were to win the primary, and Obama would be a good VP for Edwards. But once Obama beat her in the primary it somehow proved to GoatBoy that Hillary could stand up to the VWRC and win. She lost, and now she is a winnah! Since Edwards and Hillary lost, and Obama won, now Obama is totally unqualified for anything. That is supposed to make sense to us. Maybe in a I’m spoiled rotten and I am taking my toys home because I didn’t get my way’ kind of way, but that is about it.

I look at myiq2xu GoatBoy and see a dog chasing its own tail. But it makes him happy, and that’s all that counts. ;)

Has anyone asked Cokie Roberts what she thinks about a team from Hawaii winning the Little League World Series over a team from Mexico?

Hawaii was representing the United States, in case that wasn’t clear.

WordPress error comes up to give commentors a chance to think about what they’re going to say.
Then they go and have another drink, come back, and the site is working.
Then they post, and forget to remember what they were supposed to think about.

The other day I was going to make a comment and got the error, so I emailed the post to myself to add in later. The outage took so long I decided it was too much work to go back and figure out which thread it belonged on.

I guess G.K. is the best show nobody watches, but I love it. It is Band of Brothers for the Hip-Hop Gen. Well acted, and produced. It looks almost like the multi-billion dollar war we have!
It shows that our soldie.. er Marines, are a cross section of our culture, from down to earthers, intelligencia, and psycopaths.
My fav is the Sgt. Major. He’s the man I would like most to frag.

Bullshit. The VRWC didn’t attacking her much at all. They wanted to see her on the ticket. They are instead befriending Dems on Hillary sites and talking them into voting for a Republican. After 8 years of Bush there are some seriously deluded Dems (you included, I surmise) who are going to be voting for McCain. How nuts is that?

    ABTN! (Anyone but the negro)

Consider the recent survey that indicated 11% of voters had a problem voting for a black president and 4% had a SERIOUS problem with it. Imagine those numbers were lower than actuality because some folks like to hide their prejudice. Let’s be fair and say it’s 20% – 1 in 5 Americans.

Now consider Obama is half-white, was raised by his white mother and white grandparents, attended an upper middle class prep school, graduated from Columbia and Harvard Law. In short, he is as white as you can fucking get in America without being born in a trailer park south of the mason dixon line.

Feel bad for Obama? Don’t. Instead, try to imagine what it must be like to be fully African-American, with about 1 in 5 Americans hating you just because of the color of your skin and further, having none of the advantages of whiteness.
